When I was a kid, the Star wars movies where my all time favorites.
I saw Star wars in 77 when I was 3, and it was my favorite movie, I used to watch it after we got a VCR like once a day during the summer.
I had all the toys, and my friends and I played with the action figures more then any other toys. (maybe Lego's could have competed)
When Jedi came out, I remember standing in line at the movies, for hours, lol and the line wrapped around the building.
I loved this stuff, Star wars was a huge part of my childhood, yet I still enjoyed them as I got older. I have them all on tape.
I have come to loath George Lucas though. This loathing is tainting my feelings about the first three movies.
It started with Episode one, and his pandering to little kids, the whole movie was crap, I think maybe 20 minutes of it was worth watching. The whole aniken skywalker thing was terrible? Who wants to watch a movie about a dorky little kid? He aimed the movie at little kids, whom for the most part do not know or care what star wars is! He real fans are my generation and older, the people who grew up on this stuff, and he knifed us all in the guts with this little dork, and Jar jar. I own some bad DVDs, like Joe dirt, but I will not own episode one.
Then move onto episode two, a better movie yes, but still a kids movie. Compared with the LOTR series these movies are jokes.
I have also heard that Movies like the Indiana Jones series are being delayed to DVD because Lucas and Spielberg want to mess with them... That pisses me off.. I want to watch Dr. Jones get into trouble with those damn Nazi's again, and I hate having to do it on VHS, bastards!!
Why has Lucas betrayed those who liked Star wars, so he could pander to six year olds? Why oh why does he not understand why everyone hates Jar Jar? WTF?
Why has he made Star wars a Joke, and soiled the old good movies?
Is it just me who feels this way?
-
the second part......
Anakin sounds like a gay boy......can you imagine the gay boy as the ultimate bad guy.....Darth Vader
-
Well Gto,
As we get older, we revert to the ways of our parents...
"Sure don't make em like they used to"
"You call that music?"
The list goes on... I'm guilty of it myself.
-
After the first movie the Star Wars series changed from a film to an advertisement for merchandise. All downhill from there.
-
Oh, I forgot to say....
I thought Episode one and two really sucked except for a few great fight scenes. I agree with SLO, I think Anakin looks gay in the new movies.
-
I agree that Ep 1 sucked, expecially that Jar Jar crap. I don't go to animated movies and don't want animation at all. ie I hate Roger Rabbit!
The first three episodes are Lucas' attempt to hook yet another whole generation of movie goers. perhaps he think that those that get into Episode 1 will then go see 4 5 and 6. Which they did.
That way, he's got two whole generations looking forward to Episode 3 as well as 7 8 and 9.
But, I only care about Skywalker and SOlo anyway because like you I saw it in the 70's. It will be interesting to see what he does with thsoe characters in eps 7,8, and 9. I hope he doesn't try to develop whole new character sets ala Frank Herbert and his several follow ons to Dune, i.e Dune Messiah, Children of Dune, etc.
-
Empire was the last good star wars movie, Jedi wasn't that good IMO except for the final Vader/Luke duel. Come on little furry things with sticks and stones defeated the empire.

You mean after the "second" movie, right? Empire was the best.

I'm pretty sure that 7,8,9 won't be happening, atleast thats whats been said.

No.

LOL... you all are funny.
None of the movies were worth a dam regarding dialog or intricate story line. They were just fun stuff. Go watch the 1977 version again. I think they've stayed pretty true to form. Empire was the best of the lot though.
-
Furry little things with sticks and stones didnt defeat the empire.
They were the cannon fodder for dem reb's to sneak in an' blo' da' ting up!
My face SW scene is seeing chunks of ewok flying about. :D :D
-
The way I understand it Lucas did the first Star Wars for next to nothing personally. But, in his contract it was stipulated that he would have exclusive rights to any sequals as well as rights to all merchandising on subsequent films. The producers of the original Star Wars agreed to this as they were getting a quailty guy on the first film for a "song". At the time the first film wasn't even made yet and there was no guarentee that it would be a hit with movie goers.
Lucas was simply a very smart forward looking cookie.
...and I'm sure he feels really bad that he upset you Gto..everytime a huge chunk of change hits his account he cries openly..and deeply...for sure.
-
I think its the actors. The new actors are no where near as captivating as ole Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher. ect. Plus the CGI makes it so unrealistic, you think you're watching a cartoon. At least with the old monster makeup you had substance, an actual actor.

If you want Star Wars IV-VI or Indy Jones 1-3 on DVD, go to http://www.megadiscs.iwebland.com/ They're all quality xfers from laser disc and cheap too. Good substitutes until the real deal comes out.

BAH! Who cares about money? It may be partly about money for lucas, but he acts like it is all about his art, and to me his art has gone right into the **** house!

Holy crap! Is this legal? If it is, I'm all over that. I've been steamed for many years because Star Wars IV-VI and Raiders has not been available on DVD.

Well, to be honest I hated Jar Jar too man. But, guess what, I paid $8 to see it and then bought the DVD (for my son). ;)

Actually I think Lucas has kept his target audience all along. Its just us that got older.
4-6 was targeted at 7-15 yr old kids. We loved it because we were in that age when they came.
1-3 is ALSO targeted at 7-15 yr old kids. Now we hate it because we are not in that age anymore, and we dont understand that shrecking jar jar crap and the ridiculous waterfrog-creatures, and we HATE anakin in both 1 and 2 because in 1 he is an obnoxious kid, and in 2 he is an obnoxious teenager. AND he gets to make out with Natalie Portman...yessss we hatesss him.
-
I saw StarWars in 77 visiting my older brother in College. I was 13 back then. I enjoyed it but was kinda amazed by the stories of people seeing it 200 times (that was back in 77).
Guess Im a party pooper but Ive just simply enjoyed all of em.

As a diehard Star Wars fan... constantly defending the integrity of Lucas and the first two Episodes... even I must admit that I agree with much of what you are saying...
Episode I sucked... 20 minutes worth of good "Star Warsy" film.
Episode II sucked... 45 minutes worth of good "Star Warsy" film.
Episode III will suck... maybe an hour of good footage...
The attempt to make the movie enjoyable for children has ripped the feel from the movies - the dark, desperate, and hopeless mood. WTF is Jar Jar Binks? If there was any charectar in any movie... EVER... that has single handly ruined the entire experience... he (she?) is it.
The technology also got in the way... by that I mean the "universe" technology and the film technology. Mouth peices worn to allow you to breath underwater? Please. Sounds like a Star Trek movie to me... Number one, ready the away team and equip them with titanium breath pieces... make it so, engage... and other catchy phrases.
Too much explaining... I dont want to know how the Force works... dont spend 5 minutes explaining it to me... Ben's explaination in the first movie was enough... open for debate... the stuff than makes a fan base a cult. There is nothing to debate with the new movies. Its around us, teh rock, the tree, it binds us, makes us grow... ****ing awesome. It is not the result of a symbiate (sp?) relationship between little bugs in your blood stream and your brain, or whatever the **** Lucas was smoking... and we can now measure the number of these little parasites? (Theres more of that ST crap... get out the Imperial Tricorder Master Kenobi... **** off)
Corney dialouge. Oh. My. God. It was actually embarressing to be in the theater during some of the exchanges... who me? No, no, I was hear to see Rambo VIII... honest... I must have stumbled into the wrong theatre.
Crap, crap, crap dialouge... and TOO MUCH!!! Some of the best scenes/lines in the original three were the shortest. As an example, I offer the below captioned translations.
Episode V: "I am your father."
Episode I translation: "I happen to be your father from long ago and now Im very angry because Ben lied to you and Im sorry I cut your hand off with my electrum lightsaber, which is composed of synthetic crysals to get that all powerful color and special sound, but fear not as your wound will cautorize (sp?) and heal within time oh son."
Crap.
Episode V: "Bring my shuttle."
Episode I translation: "Please bring my space faring LD-24 Delta wing space faring vehicle that can do 0 to 60 parsecs in 3 nanoseconds, which is the fastest vechile ever made. In case you were wondering, the engines are Super Duper Afterburning Turbojets capable of outrunning any ship in the galaxy."
Crap, crap, and more crap. Im sick of typing. **** Lucas... he ruined a perfectly good thing because he had one too many drinks with Steven that night... have you seen the "Special Edition" SW movies? More crap... the dialouge is ****... again... someone had the bright idea to change EVERY SINGLE LINE from EVERY SINGLE CHARECTAR wearing a mask... crap, crap, crap.
Die Lucus, Die. Die a horrible death at the hands of your plastic lightsaber wielding fans. We will beat you into submission and feast upon your uncooked flesh as we dance around the flaming pile of your worthless movies.
Die.

Yeah think Hortlund hit the nail on the head there, its us ,we are old :-( <---30
I glance over at the mantle piece in my room where my original star wars figures are lined up , Imperials and cantina creatures on the left Luke, han, leia, chewy, C3, R2, Obi 1 on the right, hhmmmmmm oh childhood. :)

Despite its many flaws, I respect Episode I because it's the only movie I've ever seen where things turn out bright, cheery, and happy in the end... except that the bad guy wins.

People lose their gift and vision. Usually through arrogance. That is hwhat has happend to George Lucas after movie 2. But we insist on seeing star wars movies so they make them.
Hes washed up as a creative person. Has been for 20 years. End of story.
-
The movies (1 and 2) were OK, but man, some of the acting. OUCH!
How did Obi-Wan get his bellybutton kicked so handily by Dooku in a lightsabre duel after beating Maul in the first movie. Then he just lays there. Hell, what a wuss!! What, he got two small cuts? After Yoda saved his sorry butt, he gets right up and starts walking around. If I was Yoda, I'd have him start lightsabre training all over again!
Sorry guys, I got carried away there! One of the things that really bothered me. Lucas had the chance to make an incredible scene there and he screwed it up. Dumb Ass!
OK, Im done! :)

What about Ren and Stimpy? Any good? I love Beavis and Butthead..................... .........................
I agree, the latest StarWars films left me craving for basic stuff, yet I bought the DVDs ....I am fuc*ed up, right?

Nope, not legal, but whaddya gonna do when the real deal is non-existant. This is my third set of Ep IV-VI on DVD, and this is leaps and bounds beyond the first two. I have no doubt that the official release (if and when it comes) will be better, but I'd put this up against any standard movie released on DVD. Indy looks good too, tho' I didn't really scrutinize it like I did the star wars ones. They're definitely worthy until the real thing hits the shelves.
-edit- Oh, and they come shipped in a manilla envelope from Thailand...including the DVD and cover art. You have to provide the keep case.

Anynody sees the analogy between how Palpatine got to power and how Hitler did it?
-
like I said in the other thread, a lot of it has to do with Lucas' directing in this one. The acting is just like Lucas wants it over Ep I and II. It's the style he's going for. You can tell the guy hadn't directed a movie in forever.
Also, he's a horrible editor, at least on Ep II. He cut out some scenes that would have gone a long way to making the romance between "gay boy" and "hot chick" more believable and not so, well, forced. (no pun intended.)
We have grown up, but I still enjoyed Ep I and II. I just thought the directing and editing were very subpar.

That gives 1930s Germans to much credit. They knew they had a dark sith lord at the helm.
But there are elements of the rise of national socialism in it. and elements of Lincon and US federal power.
-
Actually, I think the only things worthy of being seen in both of the new SW movies can be summed down to a few scenes.
-anakin as a kid being separated from his mother as obiwan picks him up.
-any scene where amidala was alone (not with gay boy)
-most of the scenes where the other jedi are in.
-jar-jar race fighting the droids (except the goofy parts jarjar was in)
-lightsaber duels
-cloners and their intro of bobba fett (pretty neat!)
-the clones vs droids battle scene (woot!)
-yoda kickin arse
-palpatine's scenes (how he manipulated senate and got control was quite cool)
the rest of the 2 movies was utter crap.

There are WWII analogies everywhere - hell Star Wars is practly 1930-1950 in space.
Everything from the obvious, "Storm Troopers," to the more obscure, Lucas using British flight recorders from WWII to judge what the "chatter" should sound like (note: Red One, Red, Two, etc), to some that are open for debate... you can make a whole thread out of this stuff. The uniforms, the names, "super weapons," death/labor camps, etc etc etc.

You know, you just reminded me of why I hated Episode I so much (besides Jar-Jar and the bad CGI effects and the uninspiring starfighter design) and that's the fact that Lucas porked up a perfectly good mysticism.
In Episode IV, "The Force" surrounds all things, binds us, makes us grow, pretty much is in everybody and if we apply ourselves and work hard and train then we can harness this wonderful new power and make something of ourselves and become successful, too. In essence, hard work will pay off. In Episode I, that mysticism is replaced with a more cynical property - you can work all you want to but you'll never succeed unless these little things in your blood over which you have no control are in sufficient quantity. In short, you're either born with talent or you're not, and no amount of work is going to fix that. So, therefore, if we fail at elementary school math we should just throw in the towel and admit that we'll be coal shovelers for the rest of our lives? We have no control over our destiny? That's just a bit too depressing. And our children are hearing this claptrap. What effect do you think its having on them?

Not really. The analogy between Palpatine and Augustus Caesar appears much more obvious IMO, even if Lucas models the Empire itself around Nazi Germany.

all the Star Wars movies are crap with regards to acting and story line.. it's all about the effects and most of today's movie goers aren't easily impressed any longer.
The latest movie isn't any different than the first.. crap actors, crap story line but still fun.
-
GTO...thank you. Ever since seeing Episode I and hating every minute of it (almost walked out it was so bad), I've not quite been able to put my finger on why it was so different. I even went back and watched the full trilogy too see if the others were as bad and I had just not realized it at the time. But you hit the nail on the head.
Episode IV was somewhat childish...but very well executed and decently acted.
Episode V grew...it was more mature than III. And the acting was still decent...well, except for Luke's final scream drawn straight from the William Shatner School of Overacting (anyone else notice that you could probably overlay Luke's screamed "NOOOOOO" on top of Kirk's screamed "KAAAAAHN" and have a nice harmony).
Despite the cute fuzzies in Episode VI, it was a good wrap up of the characters. And I guess I immediately "got" the purpose of the Fazzy Bears: things are not as they seem; a theme that permeated the whole movie.
But Episode I was for the pre-pubescent and depended to much on sentimentality. YUCK! There was no growth from the previous movies. Maybe this was Lucas' intent...it is sad if true.
And unfortunately, Episode II was only slightly better than Menace. Primarily from the all but completely missing Jar-Jar (The Intergalactic Rastafarian). At least it did provide some good "universe" development by filling in some of the politics despite the very poor execution of character development.
One other pet peeve...in IV-VI they worked hard to develop new alien languages. It was very innovative. Why did everyone in I & II speak English with some contrived accent?!

Damn, I can't believe I missed Ep. III!

You are right they are all aimed at that age group.
Thats why I am pissed. WE are the fans my age group, not a bunch of snot nosed brats! LOL He should have made the movie for us, not for dumb kids who could care less about Star wars. Ask a kid, they don't car. Ask most 25 to 35 year old males and you will see it in their eyes, they loved it.
Lucus messed up, and went for the kiddies again, when he should have aimed it at US!
Still Glad to see I am not the only one...
That he has to mess with the old movies before the come out on DVD pisses me off so bad!
-
I can see it being aimed at guys 25-35 years old. The love scene would go sort of like this. Plus we could only watch it if we had Vivid DVD.
Anakin: "So what do you do for a living?"
Amidala: "I am a Senator of the Republic for my home planet."
Anakin: "Cool! Wanna go get a drink?"
Amidala: "No way lets just screw right here in front of the bar in my speeder."
Cut to undressing and kissing with some grubbing then Amidala goes down on Anakin and the John Williams score is replaced with something from "Debbie does Dallas 2000". Bow chika wowow...
After the customary facial Anakin pulls back and admires his handy work and high five's Obi Wan for coming in through the backdoor simultaneously.
-
This article (http://www.weeklystandard.com/Content/Public/Articles/000/000/001/248ipzbt.asp) pretty much ruined the entire series for me. :)
FWIW... Episode five is the best, IMHO.

wow...just spent 15 minutes (i think) reading through this entire thread...this has to be the longest agreement thread ever...
anyone else notice that in the original 3 the dogfight scenes (that IS what they are) seem a lot similar to most films about ww2 dogfights
the only real fault i can find in the first 3 is the pathetic ack bursts from the deathstar...
the first 2...dont even get me started...aside from pathetic acting(EVEN R2D2 wasnt true to his original character) a story line that would make a insomniac sleep, bad attempts at making the bloody thing look real, and pod racing...the only really interesting part in both new movies is watching palpatine come to power...that and yoda kicking bellybutton wich still is pathetic considering he is the most powerfull jedi in the universe...the fact that there lightsaber duels are based on popular misconceptions about medival swordfights...to top it all off they made a terrible movie worse by adding a pathetic attempt at a character...this movie isnt even good for nostalic purposes...
and thats just scratching the surface

I pretty much agree, but I do like that Lucas manages to create a nice undercurrent about Palpatine's rise to power that a lot of people missed in Episode I.
Sure, the movie kinda sucked when you look at Jar Jar Binks, the kiddy humor, the bad acting, the lame droids, the cartoony look and feel to it, the bad space battles, and more. But underneath all that, the movie's pretty dark. Palpatine plays both sides for fools to his own ends and winds up obtaining everything he desires. Tack on the seemingly happy ending that mirrors Episode IV and it's even funnier when you consider that the only real winner was the bad guy. Suckers.

Nah, Yoda was one of the best actors SW2 :)...and look at the Gollum performances in LOTR. (And you would be amazed to see how many digital doubles there is in Two Towers).
It's very simple...Lucas can't direct for **** anymore. It isn't just the CGI..it's *everything*...editing, acting, story, the lot, that's bad. He's still good at the getting the right ideas, but he should stick to that role and not run around playing director.

Well. the force has great power over the weak minded. The article has nothing to do with the story of the first 3 movies. He invents most of his points.
Not that there is great consitancy to the story as told by Lucas. But the wholes this guy sees are fabricated by him.

But the most compelling evidence that the Empire isn't evil comes in "The Empire Strikes Back" when Darth Vader is battling Luke Skywalker. After an exhausting fight, Vader is poised to finish Luke off, but he stays his hand. He tries to convert Luke to the Dark Side with this simple plea: "There is no escape. Don't make me destroy you. . . . Join me, and I will complete your training. With our combined strength, we can end this destructive conflict and bring order to the galaxy." It is here we find the real controlling impulse for the Dark Side and the Empire. The Empire doesn't want slaves or destruction or "evil." It wants order.
-
yes but for those psyschos order was in chaos...you see it was all a lie to get luke over to the darkside...the evil empire was just that evil...or was it...

I hope that's not your proof of this guy poking holes in Star Wars. :) I can point out any number of inconsistencies with what we know about the characters and plot in the movies.
Here's a hint: Vader was telling Luke what he thought would work best to convert him to the Dark Side. It's a lie.
And another: The Empire began when then-Chancellor Palpatine orchestrated a galactic war that would not otherwise have occured without him. He then used that conflict to consolidate power in the name of creating "order." In other words, the Empire's desire for order comes about by the Emperor's own designs to create chaos and war. Where order exists, the Emperor encourages more chaos in order to "enforce" order.
It's evil! What do ya expect?

Let's see... you stated that the article did not address the first three movies (Episode IV - VI) so I posted a quote that did in fact address Episode V.
You have my insight. I said it was an interesting perspective.
