Alcoholism is not a crime.  The AD is in the wrong.  Suspension is appropriate while the coach goes through treatment.

He wasn't fired for criminal conduct, just for idiotic behavior.  Not only would alcoholism qualify, but the alcoholic card wasn't even played until after he found out he was going to get fired.

I wouldn't have fired him, but I have no problems with his firing.
