Has anyone got either a Canon powershot S50, Powershot S400 or a Powershot G3?
Cant decide between the 3 of em......
Is there actually much noticable difference between 4 & 5 megapixels?

not much of a difference, unless you are making huge prints.
-
Just buy the cheapo poloroid PD740. It shoots the Porn just fine.
-
powershot owner here.
the only diff with more pixels is a larger picture.
if you're into reproducing (printing) large pictures then this makes sense... if you're just going to print smaller sizes and/or email them, put on websites, etc then no.. the extra megapixels don't matter. you'll end up resizing (smaller) them anyway.

Just got a FREE Canon Powershot S40 with 64 meg CF . Had it 3 days and still trying to figure out all the bells and whistles..nice camera!
I have a question:
Whats a reasonable "All around" resolution for having prints made...1024 at "M2" compression?

Just picked up an Olympus 2.0 megapixel at Costco for $199.00
Plenty of camera for our needs.
-
Yes, go Olympus :) it is my friend

nikon d100.

Started off with a 1.3 mg Fuji Finepix 1400 16 mg card it is a great point and shoot camera, good for vaca pics, sporting and social events. You can get about 350 pics at 85k per card.
Quickly moved on to a 3.3 mg Nikon Coolpix 990 128 mg card it's an awesome machine with all the manual settings.
Still have both.
The number one peeve you hear from most diggy camera owners is the lack of manual control especially focus.
If your camera lacks many manuals settings you'll regret it in the future if you venture to more serious photography.
I have close to 5 gig on my HD of diggy pics right now.

Have a poloroid 2400pdz. Love the thing, almost never use the 2.4gig setting. Use the 1.2 setting for 95% of day to day shooting. Only complaint I have is it does not do too good of a job with motion shots, gets blurry really easy.

Powershot S-20

I like the elph because it is small and takes some video with sound. If it isn't small I won't have it with me so it is pretty much useless.

exactly why I bought the Elf.. love it.
and it has the option of total manual control of flash settings, f-stop, exposure etc..
now that I have something as small as a cigarette pack I take lots of pix. I have it in the car most of the time just in case.

Nikon Coolpix 5700 :) Great camera!

Swoop, rules of thumb:
Get the highest megapixel you can afford
Get the the one with the highest OPTICAL zoom (a 3 mpixel camera with 6X optical will give you far better pics and pic opportunities than a 4 mpixel with 2X optical zoom). Digital zoom is not very good.
Get the one with a USB port. Its fuggin annoying to carry around card reader adapters or be limited to firewire stuff. Make your life simple.
If you can afford it, try getting an SLR camera. They will allow you to use regular 35mm LENSES on the digital camera. SLRs have un-believable performance.

got the powershot s230 elph........ love it!

fwiw all those pictures and movies I posted of skiing this year were with my Elf.. I have a couple of other cameras, including a 35mm slr cannon.. but I usually use the elf.
convenience... imagine skiing with a huge 45mm with lenses, etc.. every day, just in case a good shot comes along.
or.. the elf.. I forget it's there until I need it.

If you've got the dough for a dSLR, do it. Too many reasons to count.
Yeah, try a bunch, find what works for you.
I shoot in the highest resolution possible, then downmix later. If you bought a digital camera, you can afford a decent sized Flash card to store your pictures on (before you upload them of course).
4 and 5 megapixels? Yeah, there's a difference. How big is it?I dunno, about 15 percent?
How much is it worth to you?
Buy to match your shooting style. I like a lot of manual control.

Powershot G2 owner here...worth every penny. Easy for beginner, tons of features for advanced photoghraphy. Cool feature includes the ability to swap out the lens with telephoto lens. very cool digital camera. I think g3 is just update version of this, my friend has one & loves it.
-
Hmmm.
Ok well the G3 has the bigger optical zoom but the S50 is the only 5MPixel camera of the 3.......

G3 has 4x optical zoom (nice Canon optics too) G3 reports to be better at lowlight conditions that most other cameras in its class. As for the difference between 4 & 5 MP, there are definitely some 5MP camers with worse image quality than the 4 MP G3. The Nikon Coolpix cameras are very good too... but I read they are not as good with lowlight as the G3... which is where 1/2 my pictures are taken.

Digital SLRs give me chub, dats why i lub the d100, uses my normal nikor lenses and its a 6 megapixel camera.....course is $1999 but hey.
-
Its come down to $1699 now dnil. I have an advertisement for one cut out next to my monitor.

yea i heard something about that.....too late for me....but its one kickass camera for the price.

I have a Kodak DC-265.
It's a few years old, but it takes beautiful 1600x1200 pictures and can take pictures with sound and more. It's great picture with a great optical zoom, but it's not small.
-
Kodac DX3700 3.1 mp.
Wife bought it about a year and a half ago. It's ok, but the battery doesn't last long. It's a good thing she bought the cradle, it's a charger and it downloads to PC.
-
I got powershot S45
-
I got the Fujifilm FinePix S602Zoom. I really like it. Good camera for the money.
How much are you willing to spend?
What types of photos do you expect to take?
Don't forget the tripod, extra memory, extra charger and batteries, lens filters.

Swoop - seeing as you're in Britain, I'll share a titbit about the purchase... BTW can never remember if you're Dowding's brother, or if that's swoopy.
I got my Olympus C920 1.3 megapixel about three years ago at Dixons in LA. (Luton Airport). Dixons has a store there after you've passed Customs on your outbound flight, so anything you buy is deemed to be for export - duty free price. I paid £254 for mine at a time when it was £400 in the shops. So if you're planning a big purchase, window shop in the high street, then go on a jaunt somewhere warm and sunny with easyJet, and buy your camera at the airport at the duty free price. UK warranty, so none of the usual hassles about buying something expensive abroad.

or just go to Wall mart, costco, Sams Club, staples or any of a dozen other discount stores that offer a money back price matching policy.

Wife and I got a G3 a couple months ago... it's great! There are full automatic/semi auto/full manual (hmm... :D ) modes, a nice big lens to work in lower light conditions, a hotshoe to mount an external flash, and that neat "twisty" LCD display. Uses Compact Flash and has USB hookup. Plus the 4x optical that Paxil mentions. We got the G3 because I liked the bigger lens, the capability to mount an external flash, and the freedom to set my own shutter/aperture. Otherwise probably would have got the S40, however my wife liked the "looks" of the G3 (even though it's a couple hundred more).
I was taking my pictures at 1280x1024 (M1 level I think), and took the last set at 1600x1280 which I think is the highest setting. Taking them big always lets you reduce later on... enlarging stuff makes it look crappy. If you have a memory card big enough, my opinion is to take the pics at the highest resolution. But the next step down is probably ok also if you need more shots per card.
I guess it depends what you want. The "S" series are pretty good in themselves (compact, hi quality) but if you want/need the external flash, and bigger lens you'll probably want the G3 out of the ones you mentioned. Good luck!

Right then, the G3 it is.
Now here's the kicker, in Holland G3s are seriously expensive €700 ($800) or thereabouts. In GB I've found one for £470 ($750) or in the US $600 ish but international delivery (plus import duty) is a squeak.
I dont suppose any of you fine people are flying to Amsterdam in the near future?
