Title: Metallica...
Post by: JB73 on May 07, 2003, 05:49:04 PM
Anyone watch that mtv metallica thingy?

i saw parts of it and realized something.... man i love the OLD metallica! basically everything before the "black" album.

to bad that style of music is dead and gone. (NO none of the nu-metal carp is similar... im talking about good old speed metal Megadeth Rust in Peace and stuff like that is gone :( )

oh well my 2¢

From Black Album to present has been Metallicas best stuff.  Ride the lightning, Kill'em All, Justice for All, they were all mediocre-to-OK albums.  The metal-heads all seem to fein over those albums though.

Anything by MTV sucks, I want to say that right now. That was the worst dedication to Metallica I have ever seen.

Avril whatever the shreck her name is should _NOT BE DOING METALLICA SONGS_!!!! "Gimme fuel gimme fire, gimme the mute that I desire!!!"

KoRN, Snoop Dogg, and Limp Bizket covering Metallica songs- only the sweet release gracious death will grant me can save me from this pop culture world, and the idiots who follow it, that MTV has created.

Metallica died when Cliff did  :(

Black is OK. Newsted is a geezer but... he's not Metallica. It'll be interesting seeing Newsted playing bass for Ozzy, could be interesting.

Seen Sabbath and Metallica live. Hoping to get to see Maiden this summer where they belong - outdoors and with 60,000 people watching  :D

I don't think it died with the black album.  Load and reload were pretty good too.  Garage days has a lot of there old stuff redone and rocks.  But the best of all time was ride the lightning.

This may be the most wrong statement I've ever seen on these boards.  I had the pleasure of seeing Metallica 4 times in the 80's.  Twice with Cliff and twice with that other guy (never did like him)  The first 3 albums were the best IMNSHO, with Master of Puppets being the best of the best.  And Justice for all was OK but there was no Cliff :( and so no bass solo.  What Cliff did with that bass has never been topped.  He was the Hendrix of bass players.  I'm still amazed at the song writing ablities of those young alcohollica's back in the 80's.

Best concert night ever in my life was Wasp opening up for Iron Maiden, then off to Cardi's to see Armored Saint and Metallica (ride the lightning tour)  That was the best performace I ever saw Metallica give.  SO EFFING LOUD!!!  plus I was right there at the stage :D

ahhhh the days of good "classic" :D metal......

I love old Iron Maiden too, but it finally dawned on me that 80% of their songs are based on the same 3 notes.  So they all started sounding the same to me.  But Killers through Live after death were some kick ARSE albums.

Selling albums doesn't make you great, but selling them without radio play says something.

Six, would you be surprised to hear that back in like '87 Geddy Lee called Metallica "one of his favorite bands"   From a musicians stand point the stuff they did on Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets it genious.   In fact, I would go as far as to say that Metallica was the Rush of the 1980's, except for the fact that Rush was the Rush of the 1980's :D  Thier songs (both bands) were all well thought out and arranged, Rush being more bluesy.  Very well produced in the studio and lyrics that actually told a story.  Usually fantasy in Rush songs/albums, ie. 2112.  Usually historical/religious/really cool stuff with Metallica.  Point is that, at least I, hold both of these band's early careers at about the same level of talent and make me want to jam song writing ability.

And Metallica did it, as mentioned above, with NO radio play.  Heck, they RAIRLY played a Metallica song in Houston on the radio until after Cliff Burton died, I'll never forget what I was doing when I heard the sad knews. (he was my idol as a teen, I was a bass player back then and he was tha man as far as I was concerned)  They did it through word of mouth of a bunch of stoned teen agers :D all across the nation/world.  Though I really can't speak for what happened in Europe or when  because I'm not a stinky frenchman! :D  So I don't know how they made it big there or when.

They definitely do not suck though.....

 Puke,

I saw Triumph from the 6th row in '85 :)  Rick was fricken bad!  One of the best shows I ever went to.  Thank you Canada for Rush and Triumph!  Though it still doesn't make up for one Celine Dion :D

 [edit]

You have to listen to more than just the notes and words too. 1/2 of metallica's rythm was the way James picked his guitar. All the crunching E's had their own beat. VERY technical rythm's within the rythem of the song.  Orion, Call of K'tulu oh man! The best instrumentals of the mid 80's!

I'll second that, Udie.  Both bands are excellent from a musical standpoint.  Stylistically, you might not like one or the other, but both bands have mastered that style - from both a stylistic and a technical standpoint.

And I do like a lot of rush music, but I can't get past the vocals.  One day at work, my curiosity got the best of me, and I had to go to the Rush website to determine the gender of the lead singer.

Maybe if they did some instrumental stuff, I'd give it a shot.  Hell, they should get a cover band (apocalyptica-ish) to go to town on some Rush music.

I'm a fan of both early and later stuff.  They're different, and I alternate between the two phases.  I listen to both... sometimes I'm in a more laid back late-Metallica mood, sometimes in a drive-fast, headbanging early-Metallica mood.

Ahh, a non-drummer who doesn't know what he's talking about.  Are you talking single-stroke roll, double-stroke or even a buzz roll?  A buzz roll just sounds like a buzz really, so how do you count the "beats per minute"?  And just what do you consider a "beat"?

Think again.

Besides, fast isn't always difficult.  Alternate the sticking.  A fast paradiddle is much tougher than a fast single stroke roll.  Or throw in all sorts of other rudiments.

Tarmac, Rush is sorta known for doing some instrumental stuff.  Shows you aren't that knowledgeable and able to make an honest comparison, I suppose.  Anyway, check out the track "YYZ" for a good instrumental.

Udie, I saw Triumph too and still kick myself for missing them at the California US festival in about 1982 or 1983 when they toured for Allied Forces.  Everyone came back saying they stole that show.  Triumph was good despite their drummer though, he always seemed to me to be playing behind the beat which bugs me.

Saw a Neil Peart drum solo that was amazing. No other drum solo that i've seen has come close. I've seen them five times, and usually he does his drum solo during YYZ. But I saw them in '85" at the worcester centrum, and they didnt do the drum solo during YYZ. In fact they went off the stage w/o a drum solo. I never heard a place so loud for an encore, the place was shaking, it was awesome. They played a very long encore and he did the drum solo during "red lenses". He was on a rotating stage that had three different drum sets. He plays about a 140 piece set. Drum sticks flying up into the rafters, and coming back down and catching them w/o missing a beat. It was quite a show. He was one of, if the the best, drummer of his time.

Loud too, we left the building nearly deaf.

Yeah, I heard the singer died? It must have been low key, or I just wasn't paying attention.

Saw them in '91', they were backing up Van Halen. Great show.

Yeah... I think most people on this board had no idea who Layne Staley was.

Rush has some good stuff, 2112, Farewell to Kings, Hemispheres, etc.  Some of the later stuff really sucks though.  The singer is pretty annoying.  I always used to wish my stereo had a button next to "Dolby Noise Reduction" called "Geddy Lee Voice Reduction".

Slayer's original drummer kicked ass.  They are an incredible band to see live.  I've never seen or heard anything like it.  They still kick ass, but not quite as much.  Any metal fan worth his salt should own Decade of Agression.

I rank Metallica right under Led Zeppelin in the rock competion.

Overall I rank the Beatles as no.1, Zep no.2, Metallica no.3 based on songwriting, originality, performance and vocals.

Liked Rush, was never a big Metallica fan.  Admitedly, Rush was a bit anticeptic, but Metallica had a tendancy to be at the exact opposite end of that spectrum.  Never wore either groups black t-shirts.  Maybe that's what I despised about Metallica... it wasn't their music, but their fans.  Talk about being the biggest group of clones on the face of the earth.

Guess I don't mind seeing people act like clones... as long as part of the clone pier pressure involved showering once in a while.

Nah.. all the rush fans had "ziljan" t-shirts.

Surely you aren't comparing the black tee metallica army to that of the rush fans?  Granted, most of the rush fans were wearing black tee's too... but they all said "Metallica" on them. ;)

seeing as how i started this post i gotta step in a min and say:

a band with songs about faries in the trees compared to BATTERY.... hmmmm who's the "queer" one?

this was meant to be a bash on MTV & the hosers that tried to do Metallica songs on it. not the band being "honored" :(

from now on all subtlities are out the door... the gloves are off.. no letting the "boards" interpret and see what they think. you are all wrong compared to me!

Rush sounds queer because their lead vocals whines non-stop.

yep.. their instrumentals are the best

but I still like Rush at times.. don't figure

but how can one campare Rush to Metallica
apples and oranges IMO, nothing to compare.

as far as musicianship you can't believe Metallica has that going for them.. their stuff is fun to listen to and I love it but they are NOT great musicians by any stretch..
Rush on the other hand, are all top notch..
but I still prefer to listen to Metallica at times.

Rock and Roll isn't always about the talent..
it;s about the soul

My top three

1.) The Who
I think as a group they were the total package, Townsend's lyrics, Kieth moon's drums, The late ,great, John Entwistle, and the booming vocals of Roger Daltrey.

2.) Jimi Hendrix(the whole band)
His drummer(Mitch Mitchell) and bass player were phenoms, it's too bad it all ended so soon.

3.)There is a group of about 5 I can put here, i'de have to make a top ten:)

Alot of people do not not listen to Rush because it is too "deep".

They have a strange cult of intellectuals that follow them. They write of science, books, and man as he thinks. The "Fear" trilogy is written about three aspects of fear and how it affects us. "Witch Hunt" (that I relate to the salem witch trials) That describes how fear manifests itself into one's thinking and how that fear is used. "The Weapon" that describes how fear of weapons used against us affects us and our thinking( could fit well into current times) "The Enemy Within" that describes the fear of evil within ourselves and the fear of what we are capable of.

Songs written based on books include "The Body Electric" and "Red Barchetta" ( read the lyrics of red barchetta, I think it is a fantastic story)

And songs of science(there are alot) and man's hopes for the future include "Manhatten Project" "New World Man"  and my favorite "Countdown" is about the first space shuttle launch( the recording of the coversation between control and the shuttle during launch is pretty cool, then again, anything to do with the space shuttle I think is cool:)  )

BTW, I don't consider them a great band, but The Scorpions was a great concert.

Huge fan of Maiden, Priest, Slayer and Metallica (mainly the old stuff).

Personally I feel Slayer is the one band that hasn't sold out.  Slayer’s the best most aggressive metal band there is. period.

No band even compares to Slayer when you’re talking about metal!

hello ****** are you ready to rooookkkk?

goodnight ********

lights come up.

the absoult worst concert i have ever seen in my like... i seen bar bands do better while hitting wrong chords in the songs.

No, the place rocked that night. The crowd to me can make a concert. I didn't see any lip synk. Great band....no...good show.

Make-up? Lol, that was the 80's. Show me a band from then that didn't have make-up( isn't it ironic that that's when Kiss decided to take the make-up off? strange world)

Sorry, thought you mentioned make up.
