Title: OT: Website setup, options, programs, sites ??
Post by: nopoop on May 12, 2003, 07:39:35 PM
I know this is going to be booted but this is where I'll get the info.

Want to set up a website, but don't want the basic blah, blah setup. Some nice squad websites here. Where do I go, what do I do etc. etc.

First time out, programs I need ?? FTP site ??? INSTRUCTIONS ??

Looks like a good learning curve.

Any help, suggestions greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I can only recommend you get Dreamweaver trial from http://www.macromedia.com (it's an HTML editor, but it has an FTP program imbedded).

It Will be ugly at 1st, just keep trying, you'll improve for sure. And I recall you do have a lot of nice pictures to put on.

*cough*

emacs (http://www.gnu.org/directory/emacs.html)

The best editor there is. Then, get a working knowledge of HTML and CSS. Some Perl scripting and a free database as PostreSQL or MySQL, and you`re done.

HTML (in german, dunno if its available in eglish, too)

http://teamone.de/selfhtml - HTML and CSS reference

http://www.perl.org - the PERL language and PERL interpreters

Things to avoid in a webpage:

JavaScript, VBScript and such crap (We got applets you know)

Required Flash - nice for eyecandy, but if someone cant find your navigation bar in Lynx, he won`t visit again

Seriouly I won't recommand EMACS(**)  to any non coder/guru.

(*) Longue et ininterrompue suite de parenthese /  Lots of Irritating Superfluous Parentheses

(**) Escape Meta Alt Control Shift or Eight Megabytes And Constantly Swapping ;)

Homestead (http://www.homestead.com)

has an downloadable editor, for easy use...no coding required.  If you want to learn html, there are online classes for it (my wife is taking one) that teach more about it than I know or even heard of.

check out this for an example of possibilities with homestead:

VMFA232 Red Devils (MAW) (http://mawreddevils.homestead.com/index.html)

you can email me from there if you have any questions....maybe (MAYBE!) I can answer them. :D

Skip learning HTML and just jump in to PHP. It's one of the easiest languages to learn, and there is a tonne of resources on the web for it.

On any machine, on any OS, the first thing i do is to install emacs.

I work with it, I read mail and news with it, even browse the web.

There is only one true editor, and the editor is emacs.

You shall have no other editor besides the one true editor.

I don`t  wanna sound squeaky, but PHP basically is a PERL dialect, where the code is executed as the server puts out the page. The result is still HTML, and a good knowledge of what it does is the basic requirement for designing webpages.

Just buy Visual Studio.NET and learn ASP.NET cause Microsoft is COOL and the VS-Editor is much cooler than emacs ;)

BTW U can only use VI if u are long haired have a scruffy full beard and the only attractant ur body produces smells like a mixture of old pizza prosciutto y funghi, coke, cold coffee and nicotine.

AKAK, please regard Duedel's reply regarding VI as my own. (Even if I am nowhere close to that description, I used to code on it for a while... then, one day...someone sent me a link to UltraEdit... evolution, evolution... :D)

Poop, if you want this to remain a hobby & not a job... I'd still recommend the Macromedia suite :)

VI is ok to use for installing emacs. Real Programmers have Peperoni or Jalapenos on their pizza ;)

For a windows port, look at http://ftp://ftp.cs.washington.edu/pub/ntemacs

LOL! I use vi everyday, all day long! :D

My life consists of testing IBM WebSphere on AIX, Solaris, HPUX, Red Hat, SuSe, SLES, Montavista Linux, Linux on PPC and Linux on I-Series(AS/400).

Oh yeah, I guess I do some testing on Windows, too.

My life would be difficult without my beloved vi :D

Btw, in case your wondering what WebSphere is....it's the underlying java based engine that apps like EBAY run on top of. It's currently one of IBM's biggest cash cows, and is keeping this boy off the streets!

So everytime you do a transaction on EBAY, you're helping ol' banana stay employed. :)

Sawito is right. If you want somethinmg really easy to use the Dreamweaver is it. Theres a tutorial for every thing you wanna do.

Eversoft is free editor but its not as user friendly as dreamweaver. It contains plenty of tutorials as well

NoPoop,

I know how hard it is, so I'll skip all the B.S. and just offer you my personal help. If you want it, let me know I'll send you my email address and guide you through it.
