One of Bermuda's finest completed the "Round The World Alone" sailing race on Sunday.

To put his feat into perspective, ten times the number of people who have sailed around the world alone have climbed Mt. Everest.

The race was uneventful except for one incident when Alan slowed to ensure he was within range of another competitor who had run into trouble, should he have needed help...a testament to his sportsmanship......and another incident in which his boat struck a whale.  He finnished the race with badly bruised and possibly cracked ribs resulting from the collision.

Geez, :eek:  what are the odds of hitting a whale in the open ocean and at a speed fast enough to injure yourself on a sailing yacht.  I guess the Big Ocean theory is just as suspect as the big sky theory for collision avoidance.

But then again it probably says something about the pacifivity of wales, that the big brute didn't pull an Ahab on him:eek:

Actually there were two whales. They were following him for quite a while and I suspect one of them went close in to have a closer look.  There was no engine or propeller noise so the whale must have misjudged the speed of the boat.  Aparently the whale that was hit was seriously injured...a huge patch of blood surrounded the boat after the accident.

The other whale, the mate, gave chase and Alan was genuinely concerned of an Ahab incident.  He managed to grab some wind and clear the area.
