Ok, My dad and I are tired of MOH and RTCW and we need something new.
Any worthwhile games out there that compare to those above or are better?
Was thinking of getting Ghost Recon series and/or Soldier of Fortune. There was another I saw (dont remember the name now) that you could fly helicopters, drive vehicles, or solider, but figured anything that tried to do it all might suffer in gameplay or other departments.
Was thinking of starting with some of the older ones from past years and then get one like Rainbow 6 series.
We both like the lone wolf style 1st person shooters instead of the AI-squad based play, or 3rd person views. Playing in squads online is one thing with at least semi-intellegent people, relying on a bunch of AI squad members that run out in the middle of the street while a sniper is shooting is just plain stupid.

Operation Flashpoint? Battlefield1942? Those 2 you could fly and drive and stuff..
-
Battlefield 1942, hands down. It's got beautiful graphics and the gameplay is very fun.
-
I wish the demo worked for my computer :-( Thats why I don't have it..
-
Was thinking of getting Ghost Recon series
very good game,,and online play is very nice with a good host!
new tom clancy's rouge spear 3 or what ever he calling it this time,,lol is out now,,and gots very good grafics and ai,,,if you like first person shooters i would recomend both of them games
battlefield 1942 aint too bad ether
-
Raven Shield is fun.
-
Cheating in Raven Shield is fun.
-
Thanks guys'
Hawklore - Operation Flashpoint, thats the one I couldnt remember, I looked at it but seemed like it was trying to do too many things in one game. How does AI and graphics compare to MOH or RTCW? Mission/Levels, are they more than just running through rooms and kill everybody?
One of the things I liked about MOH and RTCW were the missions where you had to use stealth and avoid detection to beat the level.
Dago - I saw the Raven Shield and that's what got me interested in something other than a WW2 based game.
I hadnt considered Battlefield 1942, i thought it was more like WW2OL or Aces High, and I'm still happy with AH after two years, didnt want to really get sucked into another flight sim, but I might give that a shot too.
I'll probably get the Ghost Recon and Operation Flashpoint and then let my dad get the Raven Shield or Rouge Spear
Then we can try them out and swap them
thanks for the input ya'll

If you dont mind taking a step into the "future", take a gander at Planetside.

Vietcong (http://www.vietcong-game.com)
It just came out a short time ago and I'm having *tons* of fun with it... the multi-player is a blast. I bought this about 2 weeks ago and Battlefield 1942 a week ago, and Vietcong is what I wind up playin' much more often. There's something about that war that I find just spooky... and this game captures it very well for me.
Have a look at the screenshots on that site (I think the terrain is amazing), and try the demo.... there's a multi-player demo and I *think* a single player demo also. My computer aint exactly blazin', yet it plays very smooth at high detail.

If this is what you like, you should definately try Splinter Cell.
Its a clancy/ubi title and stealth is what it all about.
-
I'd also consider WW2OL... still has many issues but the pro's vs con's are starting to balance out and you can have a lot of fun.
The graphics engine is fairly dated compared to some stuff, but IMHO it does a good job of providing a large environment with viable cover.
Just make sure you have 1Gb of RAM or its a bit of a pig.
Theres a big focus on squads there but I lone-wolf it quite happily. Off-peak US times are fairly quiet, but I expect its reasonably busy during peak US times.
-
Here are the games on my pc currently. I've had to drag out some oldies while pizza map is up.
Aces High
Day of Defeat
Battlefield 1942
Raven Shield
Close Combat IV
Close Combat V
G.I.Combat
Unreal 2003
Urban Terror
Americas Army
Splinter Cell
Silent Hill 2
-
Given the kind of game you're after, if you're looking at some of the slightly older titles, you might want to check out Deus Ex. Very much lone-wolf type stuff, but with a pretty intricate story line. And stealth does have its rewards.

Ghost Recon on Tactical Gamer.
http://www.tacticalgamer.com
Awesome servers, awesome community.
(They have other games too)
-
I'd heard GI Combat was a very poor Close Combat wannabe.
I mean combat mission
-
Raven Shield thats it!,,very good game,,,i cant tell which one i like best,,ghost recon or raven shield
ghost recon i like for its outdoors action,,bushes shrubs to hide in,,and raven for its AI and indoor action
-
Vietcong is great in Multiplayer. Get yourself some squadmates to play with you as a well-organized squad with voice comms will not give you any chance.
Very good squad oriented multiplayer game. Single player is so-so.

any one try america's army?,,,i got it downloaded ,,but i never tried it yet,,,i hear ya got to go threw training and a bunch of stuff

Depends what kind of games float your boat. If you're looking for FPS squad-based multi-player games, then games like Ghost Recon, Operation Flashpoint, Raven Shield or the Desert Conflict mod for BF1942 are good choices if you want one set in a modern conflict.
If you're looking for a WW2 fps multi-player game, then look no further than Day of Defeat. Yes I know it's built on the aged Half-Life engine but the people that made DoD have done so much with the engine (with a little help from Valve) that even though it's a 5+ year old game engine, the game itself is as fresh any WW2 themed multi-player game out. I've got MOH, RtCW, RtCW-TW and BF1942 but even though they look nice, they really can't compare to the fast nitty gritty action of DoD.
For straight, fast paced FPS multi-player games, then Unreal Tournament 2003 is a good choice. Fast and furious fun that game is and there are also a few mods coming out (like the WW2 Path to Victory and Red Orchestra) that make UT2003 a good choice.
For a MMOG fps game, try Planetside.

To Hyena,
AA is real fun
Tip, do your best in training
When you do reg for online make sure you don't whack friendlies, Besides losing honour your squaddies will usually let ya know what they think of newbies lol
Hard to see from a distance in some circumstances the foe from friendlies
Ohh and no matter which side you choose (def or attack) you always see your side as usa ;) that's even if you choose to be the enemy
Great fun many hrs in it
Nice when you get into it and form a good team

I didn't think the A-10 was modelled in America's Army?
-
AA is fun for a while but the maps get stale after a while...
splinter cell...compared to metal gear solid 2 is not to great...the only thing i dont like about the 2 modern metal gear games is that the story line is just a bit odd...i found it easier to get into metal gear solid (1 and 2 ) than i did to get into splinter cell...
-
hyena426 AA is fun but like Defiance said when you go thru basic you want to do good so you get more honor points when start online.
Basic is easy if you've played first person shooters before. You do simple things like how to shoot and throw grenades. The Obstacle course is easy.
You need to be sure and do the jump school and when you try to qualify on the rifle range you want to keep trying till you get at least 36 out of 40 so you can go to sniper school. Sniper school is easy also, 2 guns 2 bullets 2 targets no time limit.
Was playing it all the time but my conx suck so bad now(damn isp)I haven't played in weeks.
Also as Defiance said you want to be sure not to shoot anyone on your side or you will lose points and/or get kicked out of the game.
The more points you get(winning games, Being a leader, kills) the more Honor you get and the more Honor you get the better chance of getting the weapon you want. (There are only so many good weapons per game and normally the highest Honor gets to choose)
Right now with my isp I can't play online so I've gotten to where I'm only playing BF1942. Not realistic at all but still loads of fun. The expansion pack Road to Rome is a blast.

I went and got 'Operation Flashpoint Game of the Year edition' was about £30 here in UK and its a superb game.
You get to play the campaigns as the American perspective, Russian perspective and as a Resistance fighter - where you set up ambush, steal weapons/tanks etc.
I highly rate this! here (http://s1.amazon.com/exec/varzea/ts/exchange-glance/Y02Y0723458Y4239506/qid=1052923423/sr=1-3/102-2184945-1853751)

I actually picked up Half Life. It know it's an older game but I got all 5 Half Life games at Best Buy for $39.00 I thought it wasn't too bad. I still jump when those little critters fly out of no where.. try playing in a dark room..:D I know I must have jump'd 3 or 4 times.. I'm not suck in one part of the game..gonna have to go find the cheat for the game now lol..

yeah, half life is a great game!

America's Army is a very well programmed game. The weapons are done beautifully, with fully animated controls and reloading, bullet drop, recoil, stoppages, manually extending bipods, etc. The comms system is really cool. You can whisper to teammates, shout out loud, talk on the radio, or give hand signals. I would play it more if there were single player / co-op missions. Also the maps are very small. If they change those two things I probably would play it A LOT.
OFP is awesome. Big maps, combined arms, very realistic interactive world. But I find that multiplayer is very laggy, and the multiplayer interface is awkward and missing a lot of features. The interaction between players and buildings is really bad, so it's not too good for fighting in towns and buildings. I found single player to be very addictive though.
Raven Shield is really good. It's a modernized Rainbow Six. Kind of a cross between America's Army and Rainbow Six. The maps are kinda small though. And the weapons models have all the limitations or other Red Storm games. No bullet drop, can't shoot through walls, can't climb obstacles, etc. Graphics and sound and enemy AI are fabulous though.
-
America's Army is good. So is Ghost Recon.
If you have a PS2, I'd get Splinter Cell and SOCOM. I didn't particularly care for BF1942.
Planetside and Neocron are good if you like MMORPGs.
-
Navy Seals. Old but more realistic than you can find on the market today. Give it a shot, you can download it for free from http://www.theunderdogs.org
-
cool,,sounds like i better pratice with america's army before i try to play it online:)
raven and ghost recon both great games,,i heard that about battlefield1942,,,not very realistic,,but very fun!!
-
it is incredibly fun...spent all of 3 minutes in the demo before i wanted to buy the full (still havent tho)
americas army isnt to hard to learn...and since if you die you have to wait for another round before you can play again (up to 8 minutes!!!) you learn to get good...FAST

What is RTCW?
-
I play Raven Shield/Ghost Recon almost as much as Aces High. Here's my squad site:
*IQ* Squad (http://www.iqsquad.com)
A great group of guys...and a few girls. We have a dedicated T1 server up for Raven Shield now and it's been very popular.

RTCW= Return To Castle Wolfenstein
-
I like the way OFP sounds, so I'll definitly pick that up this weekend, Thanks Funked, just what I need, another addiction.
I'm not sure how my dad would feel about any game based in Vietnam, He was in Da-Nang right after Tet, and even though he was AF, he was attached to Army unit, so went to some really weird places.
I like the idea around Splinter Cell but everything I've seen its a 3rd person game and I just cant get in to those as well. I did play Jedi Knight but I cant stand Tomb Raider. The perspective doesnt work for me.
banana- RTCW is Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Think Medal of Honor meets Doom. Mix between WW2 warfare and monster hunting. The run through the catcombs is pretty good, play it with the lights out.
But whats RTCW- TW? i havent seen that yet.
LOL Eagler, I had that game, 1975 or 76?
On-line play for me is a last place consideration for these games, there fun for awhile but then its just a bunch of people running around and fragging each other

IT is... really bad. Looking forward to Blitzkrieg and Panzers for the next WW2 RTS games.

Have you tried Combat Mission: Barbarossa to Berlin? It's worth a shot if you liked Combat Mission, mate.

Yes, forgot to list that game. It took me a long time to get into it without all the fancy graphics.

might try delta force blackhawk down
