Title: Just for the Anglophones:
Post by: Holden McGroin on May 13, 2003, 11:07:11 PM
Word use Central:

1.  “Are” and “Our” are different
2.  “Your” and “You’re” are different
3.  “You’ve got mail” is wrong. It should be “You have mail”
4.  “You’ve got to get this” should be “You must get this”
5.  The word ‘Utilize” is over used. Use ‘Use’ instead.
6.  When one stands firm and declares “That is absolutely untrue”, the non-Orwellian-newspeak word ‘False’ would be a far better word than untrue.

Department of Redundancy Department

7.   As there is no such thing as future history, one does not need to refer to “Past History”
8.   You do not need to refer ‘back’.  You need only to refer.
9.   You do not need to remember ‘back’.  You need only to remember.
10.  You do not need to report ‘back’.  You need only to report.
11.  You do not need to rise ‘up’ or lower ‘down’.
12.  You do not need to ‘pre’ plan.  You need only to plan.  Post planning is called explaining, or making excuses.

Sorry about that, it was grindin' on me like a burr under the saddle and had to get it off my chest.  Ain’t you never had nothin’ to grind ya?  Why I'm wearin' a saddle on my chest I don't rightly know.

Yeah, nitpicking time, I love these.

----
One that I've seen on these boards MANY times is "hanger". I've even seen a guy use it wrong in his homepage address:

A building you put your plane in is called a hangAr.
On a hangEr you only put your coat.

----

When you second someones statement, by shouting "here, here", it should be "hear, hear".

----

The oldies about their and there, were and where and site and sight

----

I really think it's an advantage having english only as second language in such cases. One can just make the sentence in his own language, where the two, in english, similar sounding words often are completely different.

Holy smokes YEAH! I hate it too when non-native-english-speakin' people say "utilize" instead of "use"... and *especially* when they say "That is absolutely untrue” instead of like, DUH, just saying "false". Like, wtf? Drives me nuts and I totally loose it almost everytime I see that kind of thing although I'm probably going to get flamed for saying this but you can bite me cuz last time I checked theirs a thing called free speech buddy. 'Nuff said!
