After the Mustang post, it seems we have a fair amount of gearheads among us.
Who are you? What do spend your time under in the garage? Past present cars of mention? What would you buy if you invented the Internet?
Current: 1988 911 Carrera, purchased in February... VW bug on steriods. Still stock, slower than dripping honey, but not for long - track car coming to life. Taking it up to Pocono in 2 weeks for the first time, Summit Point after that, and Watkins Glen later in the summer.
Former: 1987 944 Turbo, far from stock, owned since 1999, sold in February, one of the most underrated sports cars you can buy - makes a fantastic track car. Very high maint.
Someday: 1997 993 Turbo. Who can argue with the bellybutton end? Last of the air cooled. 1973 911 Carrera RS, nuff said. 1995 Ferrari F355, for the sound alone. 1989 E30 M3, for putting around.
PS: Oh... and no Ricers allowed... that means you Funked... whoopee punk.
:D

My current car is the Black 68 GTO in my icon, 400, 400 turbo tranny... fun car but I do not get to work on it much do to all my tools being stock behind all my sister junk in MY storage unit!
My last GTO looked like hell but it was ****ing awsome..
Same 400, but a richmond gear six speed. Laz has that now! 3.55 rear gears and limited slip.
11 inch front disks with Global west upper arms. inch and a third front sway bar. No back one needed with the global west arms.
The car was a screamer and handled way way way better then my buddies 89 stang.
I parted it out due to my dads death, no place to keep it, and it had a very bad crack in the frame, I just did not have the time to swap in a new frame from the parts car before his estate closed and the garage had to be cleared.
I had 2 other GTOs, all 68s, they ended up being parted out to make the good handling one..
I also had an 84 K5 blazer! That thing rocked! Was fun as hell to wheel, lol.. Did not hope it up, just had to keep it up... second favorite vehicle of all time for me.
(Hey laz you never got ahold of me on thos Suspension arms. lol... )
Oh and what would I get with unlimited money? Hell I would buy an indian adventures block and built a 500 plus cubic inch Pontiac motor, slap it in a 68 GTO, with tons of suspesion mods, a jerico Six speed, and slap some AC in it, and Fuel injection! The go to driving school. After that, travel the country like Cain from Kung fu! Defeating all the dopes driving new "fast" cars
Hmm where would I paint the kill markings?
and buy a hell of a lot of clasic cars!
-
55 healey with a 331 chevy at around 420-450 hp.. muncie 4 speed and narrowed chevy rear.. bilstien shocks traction bars.
69 El Camino 468 big block with Richmond gear 6 speed trans and 12 bolt 3.31 gears. modified 4 link suspension with hotchkiss control arms and sway bars and bilstein shocks .. positive castor ... oh... vintage air air conditioner..
If I had unlimited funds what would I buy? probly a **** load of classics but ...
I would build a car... 57 vette.. all c5 suspension.. richmond 6 speed aluminum 540 inch twin turbo big block... ut some wint tunnel time in to keep the damn thing glued down at high speed.
lazs
-
GTO... yeah.. sorry about the arms... unlike this thread... I don't have unlimited funds. can't really afford em right now.
lazs
-
No worries man, I am in no hurry to sell them so, let me know in the future! I am sure they will still be sitting in the same box in storage months from now cause I procrastinate so bad!
Hey would you be interested in a shooting session? I would love to shoot that .44!
-
Yer just jealous Saur. :P
There are minivans faster than those old 911s.
-
I already know way too much about what you dorks drive and you know way too much about my car.
If I had unlimited funds I wouldn't spend it on one car. I'd get a stable. Ferrari 250 GTO, AC Cobra 289, Jaguar D-Type, Grand Sport Corvette, Mercedes 300SLR, Birdcage Maserati, etc. I'd hire Lazs to turn wrenches. And yes I would insure the cars before letting him near them.
-
"Hey would you be interested in a shooting session? I would love to shoot that .44!"
GTO, let's do it. Lazs promised me I could play with his toys. You gotta bring your car.

Is this where I get to use my "I can take them in the twisties!" argument? :D
217HP stock... and a 2600lbs curb weight... not "slow" but definately not "fast." Im hoping to build it up to 230-240 RWHP by the end of the summer - beefing up the brakes first though.
-
You're screwed. Dowding told me the British have a TVR minivan which can out-corner a Chaparral 2J.
-
My name is Skuzzy, and I am a gearhead.
If I had unlimited funds,..I would have a stable of wheels as well.
For day to day use: 56 Thunderbird
For Sunday-go-to-meet-the-family: 69 Boss 302 (in and out quick and straight)
For gettin-over-the-Monday-blues: Ford GT-40 (how could ya not smile at that)
For giggles on Tuesday: 69 Dodge Challenger 440 Tri-pack (can you say doughnuts? I knew you could)
For wild-Wednesdays: 65 AC Cobra 427 (it dunt get much wilder)
For tempting Thursdays: 66 Pontiac GTO 389 (oh baby!)
For fun Fridays: 69 Shelby 428CJ (just liked the looks)
For slumming Saturdays: 65 Chevy Impala 427 (hey,..gotta pack my golf clubs in something)
That oughta keep a smile on my face.

Present:2001 BMW 330Ci -Jet Black-

The next 3 to 4 weeks for me are a tad booked though, getting ready for a trip to Washington state, and then actualy going.
Oh and before I drive the Goat out to Dixon, I am going to need to get my cooling system issues worked out.
I think I just need a fan spacer and I know the lower hose needs to be replaced.

Where you going to be? We should tip a glass!
-
Yeah lazs, that sounds like a sweet Charger. At the moment I'm looking for the perfect 69 Dart GT just stock only (one with out the rear fenders cut  ) It's hard to find them down here due to most people wanting better grip or rust.
-
Since the kids arrived I haven't even looked at old hot rods. My teenage years and early 20's were a little different. My favorite was my '70' Dodge SuperBee. It had a pistol grip manual trans and a 383(not a 440:( ) I let it go cheap too. *sigh*
Lol, forgot to mention the rediculous stock color......plumb crazy purple
-
wow that GT40 is a beautiful car!
If i had unlimited funds i would have one of these 3:-
Jaguar XK180
(http://www.autointell.net/nao_companies/ford/jaguar/Jaguar_XK180_Concept-1-sm.jpg)
Aston Martin Vanquish - saw one driving around London the other day, everyone just stopped and stared!
McLaren F1 only about £600,000!
But... i love Mini Coopers, my first car was a red/white roof Mini with rally lights, racing stripes and i would love a newer Mini Cooper with wide wheel arches. They are so much fun to drive :D
(http://www.onaminimission.co.uk/bluemini.jpg)
-
O.O hehehe Plumb Crazy Purple great color on that car I like the Superbee as well. 383 isnt a bad motor like when it stroked :D
I'm looking for a Lime Green Dart GT :D So thats about as sick as you can get..lol
-
SaburoS, dang! I'd never seen that car before...I have my new dream-car now! Ferrari F40 and Shelby Cobra drop on the list.
One day I'd be happy to own a simple 240Z with a small block dropped in and of course the appropriate suspension and all that.
-
I will be in the Port Angeles area, we are driving up to pic up my girlfriends kids from her X for the summer. we are going to spend like 4 days up there and then head back down..
I am not sure I would have the time! lol But I am sure it would be fun if I did.
I really love the State, it would be my first choice as a place to move to.

Ah, yeah, PA is alittle out of the way, we're about 20 miles N of Mt. Rainier.
Have a safe trip!

87 Saab 900 Turbo, modified to run 20psi peak boost.
Newest addition: 99 Miata, just for cruising around. Might tweak it a bit.
Dream car....hmmm.....probably 65 Corvette convertible. Dad had one when I was young, loved that car.
-
GTO... drove the 468 elky yesterday in freeway parking lot traffic... 80 degrees out... had the ac on the whole time and never got out of second gear (and that is low in a 6 speed as you know) for a good 5 miles or so.... the ol elky just happily (and lumpy) idled away at 180-190 degrees.. not a hint of any overheat... I was pleased.
puke... I got to drive a 240z witha 350 in it. lots of room and a pretty easy swap... the z rear is way too fragile tho. the z is also porky... they are not light cars.
-
Lazs, I've never gotten to drive one but I saw one once. Small block Chevy as I recall, but not being a mechanic, I can't remember what it was...LT1 or something. But I'm surprised you call the 240Z "porky." It's only about 2,000 lbs. Now, the 280ZX and above are much heavier. I've owned two 280ZXs and they are about 2,800 lbs. I know there is very little hope for the 280ZX, but I love their look.
After posting I got into searching the web for Z mods. This just looks too cool (and probably something I can affored):
-
240Z are about 2300 lbs. They are bulletproof cars too.
260Z and 280Z got heavier though, and were less powerful due to emissions equipment. Pretty much the story of every US market performance car in the 70's.
-
puke and funked... the guy who did the 240 swap told me he weighed the car before and after the swap. it was 2500 lbs before the swap.
lazs
-
He had a corpse in the boot.
-
Now I've completely hijacked this thread...sorry.
Funked, the term "bulletproof" goes over my head. I can't figure out what you mean by that.
I found a link to some place that installs V8s into the early Zs.

Theres this guy that runs at our local autocross events and I need to get a pict of this car it's so great looking and looks like a blast to drive (more like a handful).
Its a 71 Opel GT, decked in full racing gear including full roll cage. Bummer is the guy will not let anyone drive it  What a drag..heheheh
Other then seening this car on the circut, whats the deal with theses car's? The guy doesn't talk much so finding things out about this car is a bit gray. Were they popular in the stat's or were these shipped over by their owners?
-
Puke I mean they are reliable and very well engineered, especially compared to American cars of that period.
-
My last GTO with this Very same motor, and radiator, was rock solid for heat, it stayed at 200, sitting at iddle in 100 degree heat for 40 minutes or doing 80 on the freeway.
But the same combo in this Goat overheats at idle in gear and if I go ver 80 for long periods of time, part of that has to be the 3 speed auto and being at a way higher RPM, then the old goat was with the six speed. I do not think the tranyy is doing it cause I am using an exsternal cooler for it.
I think part may be the fan, about an inch out of the shroud.
If I rev it or put it in park is does not ever heat.
Hmmm anoying and I don't have the cash right now for an aluminum radiator, I am hoping the fan Spacer will help I just need to get it in.
-
You want about a third of the fan outside of the shroud at idle. check the timing... if it is too retarded it will overheat..
bad part about the Z is that the frame (or lack of) does not like the torque of the V8.. most guys reinforce everything adding even more weight.
lazs
-
Right now the whole fan is about an ich out of the shroud hehe
YOu think that could be it?
I am running about 9 and a hald advanced, the book says thats about right for a stock 400 and it runs good, and starts easy but pings just a bit at WOT.
I am hoping it is as simple as the fan shroud, I was also thinking of having the radiator rodded out, it sat for a long time in between cars.
-
Okay you motorheads,Trivia: In cubic inches, how big is the smallest 1966 GM small-block V8?
-
What's a V8?
-
Cadilacs had a 500ci engine, was that what you're looking for?
-
327 probably.
Lazs will know for sure.
-
Sorry funked, I worded that wrong, editted the question above.
-
1957 -- The "Ramjet" 283ci small block fuel-injected V8 provided one horsepower for every cubic inch. Chevrolet advertising touted, "The Road Isn’t Built That Can Make It Breathe Hard!
-
Yep 283.
-
If you guessed 283, then you're a true redneck. :)
-
Had one in my very 1st car. A 1967 Impala.
-
My mum used to drive 260Z's for a living, working at the Notting Hill Datsun showroom! she had to do the Datsun stand at the London motorshow once too. She loves them!

There are two memorable rides I had in a car before I had a license, in 1969 my dad and I test drove a 69 Shelby (Vrroooom!) and in (I think) 1974, a cousin just got a new 240Z (that was the first year, right? Or was it 1975?) Anyway, shhiteating grin from ear to ear on both rides...guess I'm having a 2nd childhood now with my Bimmer. :)
-
240Z is a great handling car. Had some fun rides in the rain as a passenger in my friend's 71. Seems to be a really well balanced car.
-
1988 Rx-7 Turbo II
APEXi Power Intake
" " Dual N1 Exhausts
Walboro 255lph fuel pump
Blitz BOV "pssssshhhhhhhhh"
Next - a Trust FMIC setup, removing AC, P/S, relocating battery, etc etc.
Lots of fuel, lots of fun! AutoX this summer will be great

OMG another ricer is born. Welcome to the club. :)
I dub thee, "Vanilla Rice". :D
PS I might be going to Stage Zero (Vishnu) this fall if I get my cards paid off. ~280hp. :)
Then I will need suspension and brake upgrades... It's a never ending cycle of expense.

You're on a roll today! I got tears streaming down my cheeks! The name fits Moose well! (moose, you guys EVER get any sun up in Maine?) ;)
-
Funked, you knew I had the rx, didn't you?
And Rip, your geographic knowledge is as good as mine -> I live in Mass
-
Yeah I knew about it Moose, I just didn't know you were ricing it out. :)
-
Rip: "and in (I think) 1974, a cousin just got a new 240Z (that was the first year, right? Or was it 1975?)" First year was 1969/1970. In 1974 and only 1974 they moved up to the 260Z. 1975-1978 the 280Z was produced and 1979 the 280ZX was created. The numbers in the name of the car denotes the size of the engine with the 240 being a 2.4 litre and 280's being 2.8 litre (300 3.0 and 350 3.5.) and ZX's having fuel injection. According to the below, a 1974 built Z wouldn't have been too impressive.
1970 240Z quoted 8.2 0-60mph
1974 260Z quoted 10.0 0-60mph
1978 280Z quoted 8.3 0-60mph (1978 dm engine 6.5 0-60mph)
1982 280ZX quoted 9.1 0-60mpg (turbo does 7.1 0-60mph)

i'm waiting for Boroda to start ranting about how all our cars are copies of russian designs. And that russian car designers are lightyears ahead of Ferrari etc. :D

nope... smallest chevy production smallblock was the 1955 265 there was some smog 267 motor in the 70's tho that we won't talk about. the 265 had a grooved real cam bearing and no provision for an oil filter. the 283 came out the next year/mid year and was just a 265 bored out. the 327 came ut in 1962 but hasn't been built since 69. the 69 Z28 302 was simply a 327 with a 283 crank (destroked) the 350 is nothing but a 327 with a longer stroke... that is why the 327 sounds different and revs better. 400 is a stroked and bored 350.

Coffee, not only is the handling porked on those but those things suck in a collision. I T-Boned one of those at an intersection once in my F-150 and he was totaled while I only suffered a scratched bumper. I'm not sure what happened to the driver of the cart because I was at fault so I never stopped.

265 wasn't in production in 1966, was it?
