Title: More important than sun glare?
Post by: blackwitch on May 15, 2003, 06:41:45 AM
I read with interest the post on sun glare, true it is a weapon to be used, as it was historically BUT people wore sunglasses or simply raised a hand, or finger, to block out our celestial orb.

BUT something else that I think is more important is our "virtual" eyesight, we are shown a black dot when an enemy is in "viz range"... no icon info' just a black dot..

MY problem is that this doesn't take into consideration camouflage, in the CT, or when the icon range is short, it's hard to see someone close as their plane detail is being displayed which means they're green (usually) yet if that same enemy is a bit further away they turn into a black dot that's FAR more noticable ?

I think what might be better is if instead of a black dot a shade of colour is used, that suits the plane... for example an F6F would be a dark blue dot, a Bf109E a light blue dot etc... this would allow planes, at a distance, to be much more realistically harder to see.

Thanx for reading this far  :)

do we not have current smth like that?
som planes are easier to recognise from longer distance
like shining p51, white zeke, kate, vals
bombers by bigger shape and 2 drones dots.
190 have bigger "dot" then 109
of course not every plane can be read so well, but som can
on MA its heavier but on CT when u know setup planes its easier.
LOD support work just like that

You're right Ramzey, we do have these things BUT they occour in the "middle distance" the majority of planes do appear as a black dot in the far distance, i.e. as soon as they come into viz range

Now in RL if you see an aeroplane that's camouflaged, it's HARDER to see it the further away it is, in AH the further away it is the easier it is to see!

In RL this is most true when looking "down" on a plane, if you're looking "up" to one then it's more obvious, depending how good its underside colour "light-blue" is at blending into the sky!

To me the way around it is to give planes a "colour dot" rather than just a black dot.
