What Over Clocking setting are people using that are stable and will improve performance?

For the ATI 9700 PRO?

well in my system:
Win xp pro
AMD 2200 Xp
512 ddr 3200
ati 9700 OEM PRO  (i know but i only paid 220 for it)
sound blaster gamer 5.1

With newest ATI catalyst 3.4 drivers

Im getting 80 max in the tower
and in fur balls ive seen it drop into the teens. Kinda shocked me
In a shoot im maxed at 100 ( with refresh set @100mhz)

I have the RAGE 3D tweaker as well (maybe i dont have **** set up right in there too)

I remember seeing different people say they were over clocking this card and geting some stable running speeds, I just wanted to knowwhat they were?

Ouch I still get 100 fps (vsync) with a geforce3ti200.

:)

Of course you probably have AA AF etc. turned to the max.

I've haven't tested on my ATI 9000 but my Dad "SE" has loaded the drivers and here is what he said to me today regarding his 9700 PRO...

300 on the up view!!!!!!!!!!!!
110 on the RNWY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
In the tower with clip board 100 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hope it stays

I would say a gain of 30%

He sounds just a bit happy about the new 3.4 drivers and he does not O/C

There's really no need to o/c your card of Aces High. Just make sure you use one of these programs to unlock your refresh rates in WinXP incase you are stuck at 60FPS in game.

sun i'll get more than 60 but very very rarely in flight and mostly only in a chute or a GV. Lately its seems to be worse ofter upgrading to the Cat. 3.4 drivers

If you only get 60FPS with a 9700Pro something with you system is seriously wrong, that is unless you have AntiAliasing and all that stuff turned on.  But even then you should get over 60FPS.  What resolution are you using?

1024x768  32 bit color  and every thing inthe card is set to preformance not quality

Something very wrong with that system box.

My system is not much faster, if at all (P4 2Ghz) and I run @ 1600x1200 with 32 bit color and 2xfsaa, no AF and get 140+ in the tower, and very seldom dip to the high 80's.

What Skuzzy said. Your system is not optimized.

BTW Skuzzy, is there a reason why turning AF on makes (message and icon) text blurred?

Skuzzy,  what monitor allows you 140fps  at that resolution?
Title: ATI 9700 pro OCing
Post by: Pfunk on May 21, 2003, 12:46:33 PM
#1 Did you have an Nvidia card in the box before you installed the Radeon, and if so did you COMPLETELY (i.e reformat)remove all the nvidia drivers?  This is a known issue that severly effects performance of ATI cards.  I'd be willing to be that this is the issue you are experiencing.

#2 What options do you have turned off/on in the BIOS, (specificaly AGP aperture size, fastwrites on/off etc.

I wish I had a monitor that would clock that high at that resolution JimBear.

I turned off vsync, to see what the card could do when I was setting it up.  In normal mode, it stays pegged at 85fps.

Oh yeah what motherboard do you have?  I would go to http://www.amdforums.com and search in there for your specific mobo and see if anyone else is encountering your problems

AGP aperature size should be half of your total system memory, so in your case AGP should be 256,  pretty sure turning off fast writes helps stability as well.

Definately disable fast writes.

Well i had to do a system restore after that missing DLL sh@t
but i went into bios and disabled fast write and turn the AGP apature up to 256 , i  read some where that if your set to 128 apature anything else isnt going to effect it.

I havent had a chance to try it out! i was getting ready for work and say your posts so i went and did it, but ill check on mu lunch break!

read this thread. This is how I remove/install drivers.

http://www.driverheaven.net/showthread.php?s=&threadid=8053

you will need to create a login for their forum, its worth it.

Error "missing fahpp.dll"

That file is part of the rage3d tweak program. Shouldn't cause your system to crash unless you deleted the wrong reg entry or file within the windows directory. Did you install the most current version of rage3d tweak? I probably reformat evey 6 months and never had a problem with that guide.

Hello boxboy28,

What r u running AGP at? - 4x? 8x?

You could be having stability probelms due to the AGP interface - disable fast write and try AGP 4x -

Just - giving u some troubleshooting advice.

HAd the exact problem you had i.e. RUn acehighs high with highframe rate then the frame rate dropped very low and had to do hard reboot to get back windows. Unfortunately it was with different hardware. In my case it was a bios upgrade that cause the problem - had to revert to the old one. The new one had problems with the AGP and the reported temperature....

Hope this helps in some way

Post by: boxboy28 on May 28, 2003, 03:56:54 PM
well sadly enough  swiching it  to 4x AGP worked  but still no faster than before and its the same damn equipment int the machine as before and it was set to 8xAGP.
its all screwed maybe some day ill get it right, but for now im gonna flash my bios and see what that does!

So i updated the BIOS but it only has 3 seting for AGP apature 8mg 16mg or 32mg..................lol well i selected 32
seems i might have gained a FPS or 2 but whats up with that ? and its only givin me the option for 8x apg (which is working)

Strange it only gives up to 32 mb aperture size---- will not perform as good as it should....

Wish I could help more  -- but am stumped now

Post by: Pfunk on May 28, 2003, 10:03:52 PM
Hmm only 32MB AGP Aperature size, every time I have encountered that its been a video card problem.  It could be entirely possible that you have done everything you should have, reformat, driver changes etc that some of the memory on that video card is bad, maybe all but 32MBs are screwed which would explain why you have such horrid performance from the best card out on the market.

Sounds like some funky bios prob. Did you flash to the most current. Alot of board are coming out with 9700pro bios updates to run these cards correctly.

I have p4 533

Not much help, but I am in the same boat.  If i find any thing i'll update here.

mars01, you sound like you are stuck at 60Hz refresh rates.  XP does this by default.

If you monitor can handle higher refresh rates at the resolution you are running at, you can use the ATi control panel to change the refresh rate.

By the way, staying at 60FPS is not a bad thing at all.

Post by: boxboy28 on May 29, 2003, 08:34:43 AM
I have the latest Via drivers the Hyprion (what ever) but they are the newest.
The BIOS is the latest for the board. i was using the 1.01 version but i upped to the 1.12 (so there is a 1.11 version i could try)

I used the ASUS EZ flash bios this after i downloaded the newest Bios.
went directly into set up and change this things i know im supposed to, But the funny thing is that it wont let me change the AGP speed either! its stuck @8x (which is fine)

Hey Shuzzy,

Thats good news, I am actually running win2k,  I should have mentioned that, but I think win2k may have the same problem.

I have actually changed Refresh Freq in Display properties from 85hz to 100hz then 120hz with no avail.  I then tried the the program RefreshForce - that is what actually bumped it up to 120.

I downloaded RageTweak and set the card up as specified in one of the above links - weird thing there I could not unlock the advanced settings. ( Maybe I have to buy RageTweak)

I know some guys that are getting 200 fps with ATI cards, I would like to be able to take full advantage of the card, but I can definately live with it the way it is.

BTW you guys don't use OpenGL your DirectX right?

Thanks for the reply, you guys do a great job!!!  I love the sim and can't wait to try AH2.
