Id go for charcoal cause u will propably have to travel further 4 the bottle every time, where as u can go to ure local petrol station and supermarket 4 lighter fluid and charcoal.

The only good thing i see bout gas is the heat is constant all the time its on and lasts the amount of time the bottle does. where charcoal has a limit.

You've never seen me cook with a charcoal grill :D

Seriously though charcoal is the way to go.  You get a much better flavor with charcoal than gas.  Trick is to put some wet mesquit on it too. OH MAN!  what a flavor that stuff gives beef or chicken.  But since your from freedom er... france I guess you don't have mesquit.  ahhhh another reason why it sucks in france :D

If it's gas or charcoal, officianados will always say charcoal.  But, that's only becaue they don't know how to get great tastig BBQ out of a gas cooker.  Gas is much cheaper and much faster and much less hassle.  Hence, you use your BBQ more.

Do you have Natural Gas or are you thinking tanks.
I converted mine to natural gas and use house gas supply.  We use it ALL the time, no matter the weather.   Just click it to light it up and in five minutes your are cooking.  Plus we never need to worry about changing tanks or running out of fuel.

For that charred flavoring, you can buy mesquite or hickory chips at a grocery store and smoke them on the gas briquettes.
Yummmmmmmm!

Once you go gas, you never go back!
:D :D :D

My father has one of those Gas/Charcoal jobs.

It's pretty nice actually, as it give you the best of both worlds.

You use the gas to light the coals, and once ignited, just shut off the gas, and get that great Charcoal flavor.

You don't use much gas, and it saves all the effort of getting an even burn on all the coals.

Straffo...do you live in an apartment, above the first floor?

I only ask because you will find that emptying a charcoal grill can be a messy job...and you need to do it almost everytime you cook.  Carting the ashes to the garbage disposal will inevitably result in a mess every so often.

Post by: Syzygyone on May 16, 2003, 09:16:57 AM
Is wood from a tree which, IIRC grows only in the southwest US and in Mexico.  It may grow else where but I don't know about it.  It give all food cooked with it a distnctive tanginess, isn't smokey like hickory.  Personally, I never cook without it!

Anyone know the carcinogen levels from cooking with charcoal?  I don't, but I've heard they're higher than gas.

Pulled an old beat up hot tub off the back patio of my new house. This left a very cool thing , a gas spigot and an electrical box. I'm thinking permanent brick BBQ with natural gas.

In America ( or maybe just in my family) it is a tradition that after a BBQ with charcoal, everyone would grab some asbestos gloves, a handfull of hot coals, and chase each other around the backyard tossing hot coals at one another.

Grandmaw was always my favorite target...... she was so funny, I don't even think she really knew to run if she could.

I use gas for my grill and Charcoal for my Smoker.  I always put some mesquite in the the Grill for flavor, in the smoker it's a nescessity.

Charcoal has a better flavor, and give you more diversity.  If you get a charcoal, make sure it's deep so you can use it for hardwood and smoking.

Gas is cleaner, easier, and cooks evenly.  You can buy flavor pellets for gas now, as well as smoker boxes.  I've never used either with gas.

If you are serious about food flavor and cooking, I'd go with charcoal/wood.  If you just like a burger or steak on the grill, fast and easy, I'd get gas.

Charcoal. Pops had a couple gas grills and did fairly well with them, but I could never get the heat right. ALWAYS to hot even on the lowest setting.  I can get a charcoal grill just right in no time.

On another note, an old highschool friend of mine built a smoker out of an old oven. He'd load the wet wood chips in the bottom and the deer up top. He cooked up the best venison I've ever tasted in my life and it was a leg to boot. Not your "prime cut". Said he pegged it with an arrow about 100yrds from his back door. Not the oven, the deer...doh!

This isn't very manly I suppose, but ELECTRIC Grills are very very convenient... I've been using mine year round for three trouble free years.

Mine came with lava rocks and you can toss wood chips on the element if you wish.

Gas grill, make sure you spend a little money on it so it isn't a POS, and use a smoker box with it if you wanna add some flavor.

Or go charcoal if you wanna save some money and don't mind cleaning the thing out all the time.

Since you've decided to go charcoal (good choice btw) if you don't want the hassle or the taste of charcoal lighter fluid, use one of these (http://www.sears.com/data/product_images/lawngarden/standard/07110139000-dv.jpg) .  They're easy to use and gets the coals ready very quickly.

Ease of use and easy clean up:
Gas.

Best flavor of grilled meat:
Charcoal.

Easiest and convenient.
George Foreman Grill.

It comes down to your particular lifestyle.

Sure :)   Basically it's a large can with holes in the perimeter of the base, inside just above thes holes sits a grate that the charcoal rests on.  You stuff a couple pieces of newspaper in the bottom of the can (below the grate), fill the can with charcoal, sit it on the grate of your bbq, light the paper and in 15-20 minutes your coals are ready.  Dump the coals into your bbq, spread em around, put the cooking grate on and starting cooking :)

Thanks !

So it's a kind of charcoal starter/primer :)
Title: Expert help needed !
Post by: capt. apathy on May 19, 2003, 08:43:37 AM
those starters work well.  it basicly works like a chimney, you light the bottom and the heat rises lighting the ones above, the chimney effect also pulls air through giving it more air to burn,  it gets all your coals ready to cook on much faster than waiting for the fire to spread out on it's own.  you also use much less charcoal because you don't have some burned up before others are ready to cook on.  and if you're a cheap bastard like me you can save a few bucks and just cut both ends out of a coffey can and use it with the same effect.

Not sure where ya live, but one of my tenants is the distributor for the Beef Eaters.

When I first did the lease with these folks, he kept telling me what a great grill this was and how much better the food tasted and how efficient it was along with the versatility it offered....I thought, great, just what I need, someone to sell me a grill. I mean a grill is a grill ya know?

Well, I was wrong....these beefeaters are 18,000 btu multi burner units....very efficient and after all of these years, I can honestly tell you, I've never tasted food off of a home grill that was as juicy and tasty as what comes off my grill...it's amazing.
They are of commercial quality and have not only a grill but a griddle as well....I cook quesadia's, pancakes, mexican omelets...the list goes on and on....you can smoke meats as well by using small cast iron smoke boxes.

As to the size and fit you want for your deck, there are many options available. If you would like, call Jim at 913-685-1111 and tell him your my friend, my rl name is Otto...he will be honest with you about what your looking to buy even if you choose not to do business with him.

Good Luck and may your calories taste yummy:)

To make a quick start charcoal from burning to glow:
Place some paper (Drenched in some fireliquid) into the middle of the fireplace. Build a pile of charcoal around it.
Take an empty food can and remove the bottom. Place it on the top of the pile, (this will work as a chimney and create a "draft", sucking oxygen into the fire). Light the pile.
