This hobby is just insane, and addictive. You all have bought a ESTES Alpha3 and lost it on a C6-7. Here’s what a L1120 does. Yes a “L” motor, does to the “MILF HUNTER.COM” Nekid (no paint ) rocket. It did well It think.
Countdown (http://www.tqc39.com/Rockets.exe)
Crank your speakers, it’s Rush.

fediddleen A!!!
My last launch was a dual stage after the first stage blew it just disappeared into heaven, i never did find that sucker.
What's the burn rate of those motors and thrust?
-
I thought the Patriot Act killed that hobby. Can ya still buy the motors? Maybe was just a bit of paranoia?

If you guys want to experience a real hoot, get a 5000 foot spool of super thin guage copper wire and wrap one end of it around a metal rod driven into the ground.
Wait for a nice ominous thunder cloud to roll in, and attach the other end of the wire to your rocket. You're going to need a big enough engine to get your rocket up to 1000 feet AGL or so.
Use an old style lightable fuse instead of the remote type with wires. Repeat... DO NOT use the remote igniters with wires! Use a long enough piece of fuze to give you time to hide in your car before the engine ignites (This part is very important). MAKE SURE YOU'RE IN YOUR CAR before the fuze ignites the engine.
Sometimes it takes two or three launches to get the desired effect, but the effort is well worth it. BEHOLD, THE LIGHTNING COMETH!!!!!!
Even though your safely grounded in your car, your hair will stand up from the residual static of the lightning strike. It's really quite cool seeing a lightning bolt hit the ground 20 feet from where you're sitting.
You can also dig up the area around the grounding rod and recover the glass tubule created when the lightning struck the ground and melted the sand into glass. It's quite a conversation piece :)

Oh and one more thing fellas...
Don't be a knucklehead and try this in a residential area. An open field with no trees is the ONLY place to pull this stunt.

Did you actually do this Grim?
Sounds great.
My nephew got into rocketry after watching "Apollo 13". I went to one of his launches. He actually insisted that we answer him as he called out --
Ecom --- go flight
Retro --- go flight
Capcom -- go flight
:)

LOL Midnight! That is awesome. Kids have the best imaginations!
And yes, myself and an engineer where I work have done this twice... It's quite a spectacle!

WOW.... I could tell by the grins that must be a blast. (no pun intended.) Thanks for sharing, Creamo, but why didn't you get any photos of the starbursts after they got to altitude??
Hey Grim, Great idea- I have a roll of copper wire, but I don't have a rocket. Do you think my kite will work?
-
Interesting film. What altitude and how far away did it land?
-
Sorry Mav but Creamo can't answer us. He was arrested today and accused of being the mastermind behind Iraq's secret rocket program.

You can’t be serious Grim?! That's insane, you'll be killed.
A estes C motor which takes small rockets kids can build, go to over 1,000 ft agl have about 9 newton-seconds of impulse. That L motor had nearly 5,000 newton-seconds. It weighed 10 pounds in propellant alone, pushing a 13 lb rocket, and it went to 11,497 feet AGL. In the picture during the rocovery, you can see the flight line in the distance (white tents), so I dunno, maybe it landed a 1/2 mile away? Remember these are electronic altimeter dual-deployed so they free fall on a tiny drouge chute and don't open the big one till 800-1,200 feet, taking recovery from what would be miles, to sometimes under a hundred yards.
I have all this on video, but have no idea how to make up a small movie with the stills. Looking into that, as you can make some pretty neat sh*t on computers these days.
-
lol Airhead
-
I wonder if you could make an R/C Space Shuttle and control in back for a landing after the rockets run out?..That would be cool!
Cool slide show!..I like how you got the model rocket launch pix with the song part...:)
-
Creamo nice! I remember the biggest rocket engine I used as a kid was a D-12.
Nice slide show!

Been doing HP Rocketry for quite a while...
Here is a great movie of one of SLRA's member's rocket not doing very well at launch:
Rocket Mishap (http://www.stlouisrocketry.org/movies/k1100_cato.mpg)
It was a four motor cluster of K1100 motors. 2 of them CATO'ed at ignition. Pretty spectacular to say the least....

LOL Creamo,
I'm still alive! As long as you're inside of a vehicle when the lightning strikes, you're not grounded, and will remain safe. The only thing you'll feel is a little bit of residual static, and smell a strong odor of ozone. The thunder clap produced is the worst part of it. It creates one hell of shockwave when you're that close to it. It's quite spectacular really. We did this a couple of times a few years back.
Our shennanigans came to a screeching halt after my friend received third degree burns on his legs while we were creating fire tornadoes...LOL His wife isn't too fond of us hanging out together anymore... But that's a whole other story!
