Basketball is a sport.  Good one too.  Hockey I've never been into...  I probably could like playing that but I don't ice skate very well.

I’ve always thought that basketball was a sport that encouraged a poor work ethic. Think about it…. Your team has the ball and they take it down the court, Bumpity-Bumpity-Bumpity-Bump (assuming they actually dribble the ball the last five steps)… He shoots the ball and puts it through the net…. Okay, what happens to the ball at that point? They just give it to the other team! They hand the ball right to them! It’s like sports welfare! “We’re sorry you weren’t good enough to stop the other team from scoring... Here, take this ball without having to work for it.”

yeah i know there is some cheap pansy crap under the net, but what about the ball carrier? look at the difference between what happens when a hockey player tries to carry the puck, and a basketball player dribbling up the court.

Basketball is strange... off the court I think you would be hard pressed to find a collection of individuals with less class, and on the court, when people arent busy shooting free throws because someone looked at them funny when they jumped, theyre just running back and forth.

Hockey on the other hand requires a mix of brute force and finesse.  Off the ice, the players are 95% well spoken, educated, intelligent, and gracious.

In Philadelphia for example, its easy to compare someone like Allen Iverson with Jermey Roenick.  Iverson is a thug.  During his press conferences hes insulting to his team: "My team needs to pick it up and play behind me, etc etc etc, Im the best, etc etc etc." and he's more concerned with bringing pistols over to some guys house where his girlfriend is appretnly staying.  JR actually has a personality, and more often that not usualy takes over control of the interview from the reporter - its actually pretty funny to watch.  Off the ice he has gotten into some trouble in the passed with women other than his wife... but he isnt filmed with drug dealers and doesnt think a brand new Lexus and 20 inch wheels means you have money.

I just cant get into Basketball because the frikken whistle is blown every 7 seconds - and who can get excited about a basket when there are like 100 per hame?  You score in basketball and people clap - you score in a hockey game and the ground shakes.  Its just more fun to both watch, and play, IMNSHO.

The only years I only enjoyed basketball where when the Bulls were doing well in the early/mid 90's (being from Chicago).  Once Michael left, the sport kind of died.

hockey players don't play in their underwear, don't have attitudes, don't think the world revolves around them, work hard the whole time they are on the ice and don't watch themselves in the mirror when they're making a shot.

Choosing Iverson to represent basketball players is like choosing Bob Probert to represent Hockey.

Quote
By the 1987-1988 season Mr. Probert had established himself as a tough player that stuck-up for his teammates and never backed down from a brawl. He also became an All-star that year, his only all-star selection to this date. After some much publicised run-ins with the law that kept him away for most of the 1989-1990 season Bob came back with a strong 1990-91 campaign where he re-established himself as one of the best men in front of the net. Bob again had another year taken away from him, the entire 1994-95 season, for some substance abuse problems.

Compare him to Kobe Bryant, or The Admiral...

Hockey is a truly manley sport....60+ games a season, 2-3 days at most between games and some of the fastest action and hardest hitting in sports.

How many basketball players would return to the game in the same period after getting their face stitched up in the locker room?

MT - I was comparing the two sports from the Philadelphia perspective, so JR and IA is a worthy comparison.  Granted, IA might not be the poster child for good conduct in the NBA, and you cant argue with people like "the Admiral" (real class act) but I think people like Robinson are the exception in Basketball, in Hockey, they are the rule.

We can both sight examples I suppose, but its kind of hard to argue with the behavior of the average athlete in each respective sport.

And whats with the Mullet/Motorcycle thing?  The discription of Hockey players or fans as rednecks is almost laughable.  Thats like calling Golf fans violent and unpredictable.

I think Iverson's problem is that he's still a young enough member of the league that he doesnt want to "sell out."  He's still playing to impress his 'G's in the 'hood.  He could make $60M more a year in endorsements if he would just shut his mouth and play Basketball instead of pretending he was a gangbanger that played sports on the side.

"Yo.. check this Snuggels Fabric Softener ****... its the ****... on sale now at the whack G crazy KMart.  You want your cloths soft and **** so the squeakes touch you and ****, werd?  You gots ta buy this ****.  Its the ****.  Smoke weed.  Werd."

Getting elbowed isn't even remotely similar to getting checked into the boards, having your teeth knocked out by a puck, taking a high stick and getting 20 stitches, or getting your clock cleaned by a nice clean hockey hit. Trying to compare a basketball player's toughness to a hockey player's is like saying being a ballerina is just as tough as being a lineman in the NFL.

Basketball players have endurance, I'll give them that. But tough as hockey players? I think not.

The stupid thing about basketball, to me, is that with two minutes left in the game the score is likely either tied or there's about a 2 point difference. What's the point of sittin' through the entire game?.. all 48 minutes and 100 some odd baskets... Just turn it on for the last two minutes because everything that went on before the last two minutes makes zero difference to the outcome.

A Professor here at our University(named McGill) a long long time ago had students in his class room......1 day he took his students to play a little hockey.....

of course most sucked very bad......they where wimpy pushing pencil geeks....not hardcore men ready to die for there teammates.

so this professor devised a wimpish game where you can loop a ball into a basket and each end of the court.....and voila

Basketball:D

this said professor moved on too teach in Boston.....FYI basketball was 1st played here in Montreal.....for little wimpish boy scouts.....now its played by freaks of nature....gotta grab your ladder just to get an interview with 1 player.

I wouldn't go as far as to say that Basketball isn't a sport. It requires a TON of endurance just like soccer does. Because I don't like it or watch it doesn't mean it isn't a sport.

But Basketball as tough a sport as hockey? That's laughable.

Basketball requires more skill, more speed, more strength and more endurance than hockey. I think that the real reason some of you hate basketball is because you were constantly picked last on the playground.

Man Midnight, have you ever actually seen a hockey game?

Basketball requires more speed? Measure the speed of a hockey player vs. the speed of a basketball player...  I'd venture to say the hockey player is going twice as fast. When a small puck is travelling at 150mph, I'd say the reaction time has to be faster than grabbing a 30mph large basketball out of the air as well.

Basketball requires more skill? The two sports share many of the same positions. Centers, Offense (Wingers in hockey) and defensemen. All of this while having to skate on ice as effortlessly as you and I walk, and having to set up plays and picks simultaneously.

Basketball requires more strength? Ever seen a battle along the boards for a puck? Any time a basketball player gets shoved, it's whistled as a foul and it's freethrow time. In hockey, fighting for the puck continues until someone gets it unless they get punched in the face. Then it's a foul.

I will say that basketball players probably have more endurance, since hockey players rotate their line frequently. I'll give you that one.

Title: Basketball isnt a sport .......Hockey is!!!
Post by: Saurdaukar on May 20, 2003, 01:08:26 PM
Endurance:  Basketball players jog around with the occasional sprint.  Usually for bouts of anywhere from 20-30 minutes with 3-5 minute rests inbetween.  Hockey players skate balls out for about a minute at a time, and usually sit for about 2 minutes.  This countinues until the average player usually has stacked up anywhere between 25 and 35 minutes in the ice.  The physical effort level is far greater in hockey, and as such, they are some of the most conditioned team athletes in the world (second only to Soccer (football) and Tennis IMO)  You can argue that, as mentioned, hockey player sit every minute or so, but the total energy expended is greater as basketball players are pretty "easy" unless they see an oppounity.  I figure basketball players approach the 100% effort level than a hockey player lives by once or twice a minute for a few seconds.

Skill:  Appels and oranges.  If you put a basketabll player on ice, he would fall and not get up.  If you put a hockey player on a court, he wouldnt be able to play competatively.  At other levels, however, any 8 year old can run around with his friends and play basketball.  You run, jump, and shoot a ball.  Hockey requires two important skills: the ability to ice skate... very well, and the ability to fling a small, frozen rubber disk with a 6 foot stick.  If you cant skate, you cant play.  If you cant use the stick, you cant play.  If you want to play competatively, you need to be at the top of you game in both areas and then subject yourself to flying bodies aimed at you the entire time.

Speed:  Its simply not possible for a basketball player to run as fast as a hockey player can skate.  Period.

Strength:  Again, not really a contest.  Basketball players must be in good shape, but they arent "strong."  Taking strides at the NHL level is probably about comparable to jumping up and down for the whole game instead of running throughout an NBA game.  In addition to this, you must be able to both fight off and give good solid hits to other players.  Defend "toughness" or "strength" any way you chose, claiming that basketabll players are "stronger" than hockey players is ridiculous (did I spell it right MiniD?).

As an example Ill sight mental toughness since the physical comparison is almost laughable.  A basketball player gets an elbow to the ribs under the net... ow... ow... it hurts... I need a doctor... call a foul... ow!!!  No.

A hockey defensemen lines up a forward skater in his zone, and with a closure speed around 30 MPH proceeds to hit him as hard as he can into wooden boards than dont give.  Upon shaking the puck loose, another player gets it and takes a shot, the other defensemen than dives out, 6 feet infront of the shooter to stop a 120MPH slap shoot with his chest.  After both engagements, the players get up immediately and continue to gun after the puck and the player than has it.  Lets say one needs stiches... he'll miss a shift or two while his face is being fixed.  A basketball player is already having an ambulance called for him.

Hockey is not a tough sport at all- hell women play it.  Nothing rivals Football (American) for brutality and violence.  I played it all -rugby, hockey , basketball, soccer and on and on.  The full speed collisions that happen in football cannot be rivaled by anything in sports.  The pain of getting laid out by a bone jarring hit is indescribable.  All the hockey dorks and rugby dorks are going to disagree but there is no contest.

Hockey is Soccer on ICE

If you think a mid field football hit is more violent than a mid ice collision I can only assume youre refering to street hockey.  As football players cant run as fast as hockey players can skate, the collission is not as severe - its just math.  I'd rather be hit by a free safety coming in full bore than a really pissed off goon with a stick and knives attached to his feet.  ;)

There was a great picture in Philly here a few years back of the Eagles (football) and the Flyers (hockey).  The joke was that the hockey players were bigger, so that arguements out.

Post by: Urchin on May 20, 2003, 01:33:38 PM
I've played rugby and football, and I'd have to say that football is definately the more 'violent' of the two.  In football, you get HIT.  You put everything you have into stopping the ball carrier- and you honestly put EVERYTHING you have into it because you know you have pads so it won't hurt you as bad.  Rugby there is a lot more hitting, and it is faster paced, but the hits aren't as hard.

I've never played hockey, but I'd wager it is probably at about the rugby level for violence.  A lot of bruises, broken fingers, broken noses, but not to many broken legs or other 'major' bones.
Title: Basketball isnt a sport .......Hockey is!!!
Post by: MoMoney on May 20, 2003, 02:07:23 PM
Did not even mention the fact that you use your helmet as a weapon too.  Every year in this country about 12 people die from playing football due to collisions.  Chuckey Mullins ring a bell to anybody?  Old Miss safety that died after taking a shot.
When I played I saw my friend break his neck…sounded like a branch breaking.  Another friend shattered his hip bone and walks with a cane today.  After games I was covered with bruises and my feet were normally swollen because of people stepping on my feet throughout the game.  Once I took a shot from a fullback that caused my neck to swell up and a tumor later formed.  Nothing compares to the brutality of football …at least any mainstream sport.
You can’t be serious about hockey players being bigger than football players??  Most interior linemen now are 6’7” 300+.  Did you see that Dallas Cowboy linemen bench 700+ pounds during a Monday night game?  My friend got drafted to the Arizona Cardinals and never made it out of training camp.  He was on pain meds around the clock because of the shots he was taking.  Skip a day or two and you loose your spot.  Look at Earl Camble today- poor man cant even walk.  He needs a aid to lift him from a seating position because of all the damage he took in his career.  Hockey players are pampered rednecks with bad haircuts and buck teeth.

Football is pretty tough. However since it's not a constant field of motion it's a little different then hockey..

anyway, besides the obvious fact that hockey is better, you'd be hard pressed to find a 120mph shot. 150 is laughable. they're still at the 100s now

What did McInnis fire at the skill compitition a few years back... didnt he register 123 MPH?  I think that was it.

In any event, MoMoney, the size issue was a joke for that reason - the starting hockey line was bigger than the starting football line.  But it doesnt really matter how big a lineman is, or how much he can bench.  All hes doing is standing into someone 2 feet away and pushing.  Id say an open field hit is alot more comparable to a hit in hockey.

Different strokes for different folks I guess - football is just too boring for me - 6 seconds of movement followed by 2 minutes of listening to the announcer... repeat.  The days of "real men" playing football are over (cutting off a finger instead of sewing it back so you can play the 4th quarter, etc) - Hockey still has some of those guys left... alot actually - that will play with injuries that would bench alot of current day football players... let alone basketball players.

Didn't even mention the fact that football is BY FAR the most complex sport.  Its FULL CONTACT CHESS.  Play books cover thousands of plays at the pro-level..I'm including all of the possible formations along with the plays that go with them and even audibles.
You can’t even imagine what goes on in the trenches- its warfare.  Its not exhausting pushing on a 300 lb maniac every play?  Oh ya- many Offensive linemen pull on almost every play today.  That means they run in front of the backs on sweeps ..etc.  That’s why those big guys can run too.  Defense linemen- forget about it- you run pursuit every play while jumping over bodies and fighting off blocks.  One play and your exhausted.
What do you think goes on in those pile-ups?  Biting-spiting, cursing and God knows what else.  War is hell…Football is hell- but fun to watch.

Happened regularly when I was playing. But then I had a coach who wanted to win the last 10 minutes of every game. We ran till we puked on many occasions.

We actually did sprinter interval training ... out on the track. Try running 10 straight 200 meter sprints under 26 seconds each with nothing but a 200 meter jog inbetween to rest. And that was just a small portion of the 3 hour daily practice.

There is no doubt that Basketball requires the greatest athletes in the world. The worst player on an NBA team can probably outrun outjump and possesses better hands than all but a few tight ends in the NFL.

no doubt.. what a joke.

for the record.  the average hockey player is NOT nearly as big as the average football player... but.
they collide at over 60mph at times, and play the whole time they are on the ice.

a football player would die of a heart attack if they tried to keep up with a hockey player.
on the flipside, most hockey players would get crushed on the football field simply due to the size difference.. assuming the football player could actually catch one :)

I don't remember the stats but the actual play time in a football game is very low.  They huddle, call a play, call a timeout (or tv timeout), line up to actually play.. hike the ball and the play lasts for what?  10 seconds?.. then gather around while they place the ball.. rinse and repeat.
total playing time during a football game is in minutes, not hours.

hockey:  game on the whole time you are on the ice.. expcept for face-offs.  oh.. and then there's playoff OT>. can last longer than the game itself.

and unlike basketball, they players don't stand around waiting.. they are moving, skating, hitting, fighting, etc.. the whole time..

The worlds most demanding sport is Moto-cross.
It uses every muscle in the body and the demands on the cardio
vascular system are second to none.
Most all of the pros. are less than 5% body fat.
Do you're research and you WILL find Moto-cross the most physically demandind sport in the world.

Any basketball player standing around and waiting (except during foul shots and jump balls) isn't doing his/her job. And when its a foul shot the clock aint running.

No doubt that hockey players are incredibly skilled and in great shape. Just not as skilled as basketball players.

tell ya what.. all you basketball players come by my place and let's play a little hockey.. then tell me how tough basketball players are ;)

sorry MT that's kinda weak.. a panel in the US decided who the top atheletes are?

how about real atheletes?  you know, like biatheletes, etc.

hockey isn't as popular (yet) as basketball and football.  tends to skew the results.

Skating lines is just as tough as what you describe....and hockey players look better doing it than a bunch of really tall guys lopeing around a track.  ;)

RC51 is right..motocross riders are in the best shape athletically.

Come on you guys...

If the amount of pain you can take decided the best athlete in the world then the winner would be Chuck Wepner.

Basketball players are (on the average) bigger, stronger, faster and more explosively quick than Hockey players. <----- period

lmao

I guess we have to agree to disagree MT..
I've played both and while basketball players are definately taller.. I can't agree that they are more athletic.

I've never sweated more, sucked air more and been physically abused more than during a hockey game.

in fact, the basketball players that used to play next to an outdoor roller-hockey rink used to be amazed and thought the roller hockey guys were nuts.. (imagine if they were next to real h ockey)

I used to race moto-cross, and the worst part of it was the punishment on your arms and legs. Absolute constant motion. Even your face hurt. After a race it felt like you just did an ungodly amount of pushups and squats. You truly get beat to hell out there.

I wouldn't compare it to the feeling you get after running till you drop and then throw up, it's a different kind of exhaustion. Every single muscle in your body feels like jello, and all you want to do afterwards is go home and crash on the couch.

Yeah, Im one of those "cool nerds" too.  :D

Im blessed with striking good looks, a GQ physique, a large noodle, and athletic ability.

Fourtunately for me, my status of "Star Wars Freak" and the time I spend shooting down virtual aircraft and blasting Nazi's while capping flags offsets some of that.

Take pride in your nerd-dom I say!  I just cant associate with people that dont like Star Wars and WWII aviation anyway... they're boring.

Well, they are certainly bigger.  A 6'5" guy is a big deal in hockey.  And yes, the strongest basketball players are also stronger than the strongest hockey players.  Is there really some guy in the NHL that can bench more than Karl Malone or Shaq?  They are also faster, at least as far as running is concerned.

Things like explosiveness, pain tolerance, and body control are more subjective.

Find a B-ball court at the con and I'll spot anyone within 5 years of my age 5 points in a game to 10.

I love hockey, but what I don't get is why team owners haven't figured out yet that they should hire the biggest, fattest sumo wrestler they can find and park his flubby bellybutton in front of the goal.

I' not good enough at that game to compete...I'll bring my tennis racket though...be fun to watch a sweaty bald man chase a ball from one corner of the court to the other.  I'm sure you can handle it though...being a "BASKETBALL" player and all.;)
