African American history.
That takes precedence over math and science and all other subjects, because if they don't know who they are or where they came from then I don't believe they will know where they are going," Johnson said.
Everybody knows that African - American history takes precedence over math and science and all other subjects , and if you are not taught it, you will never know who you are or where you're going :)
What a moron. That'd be considered a racist statement if a white person made a similar statement about white- American history.
And I say white American history, just as people that say African -American history really mean black- American history.
Why can't they just be taught American history? Isn't that pretty much all inclusive, since we are all Americans?
-
while I agree that allmost any schooling is better than public schooling... the blacks seem to be doing it for the wrong reasons. they put african and black history above math and science... you are not gonna get far with a head full of african history. Plus... it will just make you annoying.

ive always found this issue to be controversial. You get people like jesse jackson whining and beatching about racial this and that and unfairness this and that... and yet they themselves actively work to make things unfair for those that dont share the shade of his skin.
Then theres this african-american "label". Seems to me the only ones pushing to label themselves as such are those that fall under said category. And why? To get more benefits than those that are not under their label. Its like brand naming (TM) yourself. oh, the exclusivity of me! And raise hell if the other brands dare say they are just like me.
I see little difference between those kind of people and the KKK. At least one of the 2 has the decency to act and dress like the morons they are.

Mark Mabson, a homeschooling father, said, "I want to be looked upon as an individual and as an individual I want to do what is best for my family, I don't have to follow with the majority."
The Mabson family feels that the public school system is failing on numerous levels and is moving away from what is right to what is politically correct.
"We can teach our own morals, we can still say the Pledge of Allegiance, we can teach them about our country and loyalties," adds Karen Mabson, Mark's wife.
Exactly the same type of sentiment most of the right wingers on this board have been advocating.
the blacks seem to be doing it for the wrong reasons. they put african and black history above math and science... you are not gonna get far with a head full of african history. Plus... it will just make you annoying.
Generalizing an entire race based on a quote by a single member is annoying too.
-
well... i don't mind a Scottish events weekend or a St Patricks day or cinco de mayo where everyone gets to be a Scot or an Irishman or a Mexican for a day but... Too much is too much.... especially if they whine about it.

and mt... if they are doing it to give their children a better education then they are doing everyone a service... but... why even add the crap about african history in the article? Hard not to generalize when everything you read that has blacks in it is so open to being generalaized and trivialized. It's allmost like the liberals want us to be seperate... oh wait..

NUKE: Why can't they just be taught American history? Isn't that pretty much all inclusive, since we are all Americans?
Obviosuly not - and getting less so by the year. Once the american society released it's claim on the cultural preeminence within its own country, the disintegration was inevitable.
Historically, democracies always break appart on the ethnic/cultural lines since radical politicians playing on the local feelings of ethnic superiority/inferiority and envy will always prevail over more reconciliatory politicians in their ethnic populations.
Once the process of forced assimilation is abandoned and even natural assimilation is prevented - by educating children in languages other than english and theaching them history/culture other than the prevailing one, rather than in addition to the prevailing one - the process is self-accelerating.

I think safety and a chance for a better education are the reasons for this growing situation. The African-American history thing was thrown in as someone's attempt to tack on their political cause, ride the coat tails kind of thing.
-
Hmmm... with regard to American History, it seems to be very regionalized, IMO. Perfect example is California. We spent a lot of time on California history and the Civil War was pretty much glossed over. I don't really believe there such a thing as an all inclusive American history.
-

Well, they got that part right.
-
I think Black history has been excluded from most history books for a long time for various reasons and they should be added in.
The problem we have now a days is that some people go overboard on what they think should be added.
Black History month is one example of going to far. I can't find ANY better example of racism other than maybe a KKK rally.
-
All we need to do is pass a comprehensive school voucher program and then we'll be sending our money to guys like this.

you're kidding, right? you are comparing black history month with a KKK rally? how is black history month racist? its not. I don't see systemic black privelige inherent in black history month. no one is forcing you to behave black during that month or any other for that matter. isnt this what you rednecks have wanted since Brown v Board of Education? for blacks to get out of your pure white schools? jesus christ ,make up your minds.

I'd like to see:
White history month.
Miss White America
White Entertainment Television
NAAWP
United White Folk College Fund
etc etc.

turn on the tv martlet.. its pretty much all white people's programming. ..also, pretty much every other month is white history month..we celebrate achievments and discovery by white folks all the time, you only notice it when its a black achievment that is mentioned. as for the NAAWP..hmm how about the Republican Party? (said only partially in jest).. then there's the United White Folk College Fund. if you knew how many people were denied admission to colleges based on their race and inherent racism in colleges, you might be (or should be) shocked.

white people's programming? Like what?
We celebrate achievements of PEOPLE, what difference does it make what color they are? How does that mean I don't deserve a white history month?
Could you show me some examples of racism in college admission, or are you just going to throw that out there? Last I knew, you didn't have to declare race on a college, or any other, application.

I work in an invironment that his saturated with PhDs in Physics, Math and Chemistry (and Chem E)... I've never seen an African American PhD in any of these fields at my company. I've seen a few Black men/women in those areas, but all from Africa.
Maybe its racism... but then the PhDs where I'm at are made of a very equal mix of Russian, Korean, Taiwanese, German, Irish, Indian, Romanian, Canadian (LOL!) and... well... I don't know how many others. Just no African Americans at all.
Of a freshman class with 200 engineering students in it (back in 1990), not a single one was black.
Your mileage may vary as far as experience goes... but mine indicates that engineering is not a field that African Americans gravitate towards. Feel free to speculate amongst yourselves as to why that might be... I have no idea myself.

Why would I want to be black? Or latin? Or female? Or anything but what I am now?
If someone has a problem with the cards they were dealt, then that hardly makes it my problem.

I'd like to be black from the waist down.

personally I wouldn't want to be anything other than I am (ok maybe born into a little more money :D ).
I do find a lot of white kids today trying to 'act black' ( or at least whatever the current stereo type of 'acting black' is. the black men and women I've known over the years are as varied in how they act, moral character, etc as whites I've know) I find it sad.
not that they are trying to be black specifically, but that they can't seem to be proud to be white. pride in your heritage is considered racism if you're white. Its no wonder so many kids are ashamed of their race, they are being told that they are the cause of all societies problem from the time they first go to school. they are told they are the reason that their black friends families have no money (even when their families have no money either)
I've also met blacks who where ashamed of their race, or try to avoid doing anything that would be considered stereotypically black. this is equally disturbing to me. I hate to think what a personal hell a person goes through to be ashamed or deny a part of who they are.
-
Historically highly educated blacks tend to be medical doctors, lawyers, teachers and government officials.
My biggest concern with black and education besides the idiotic pushing of afrocentricism is the "sell out" factor - where poorer blacks who seek education and sucess are often castigated by their peer as sell outs. I have seen this crap first hand with one of my high school friends and it pisses me off to no end.
-
LOL, white people whining about Black History Month? I think I've seen it all, now.

MTV sure makes it appealing these days doesn't it?
Personally I think that too much is made about African-American everything.
I find it repulsive that any race would shout "We deserve to be considered equal as others but we need Affirmative Action and other special considerations." Seems to whisper double standard to me.
I'm also amazed that someone Black can call someone else Black a n*gger [edit: I see this word is verboten] and yet if anyone else says it then it's considered racists. Seems to say double standard to me.
As Martlet said...how about White History Month, White Miss American, hell White anything...it's then considered racists. Seems to scream double standard to me.
Yet it is insisted that everyone is equal.
I applaud Blacks for taking responsibility for their destiny while culturally it's not encouraged. It's an easy excuse to hold that mantra "The White man is holding me down" close to heart and say that they deserve this and that while not working for it or sacrificing for it. The same could be said for a lot of people (of all races) but Blacks have consistently waved the race card far too often. I think Jesse Jackson/Al Sharpton are the men who cried wolf once too often.
Do I think that certain people are out and out racists and take every oppurtunity to hurt other people of other races...yes I do, but there are these people from ALL races. I also feel that someone who would do that is morally bankrupt and probably deserves to be shot, but I also feel that Jackson and Sharpton should also be considered villians toward Blacks.
It seems that they trivialize every occasion something happens to a Black person and desensitize us to the very real occurances of racism. The heirs to Martin Luther King they are not.
Black men and women are nothing more than men and women. I personally do not feel that they deserve as much consideration as they have been. It is politically correct to feel sympathetic to Blacks like it's a black eye (no pun intended) on our history so we act all nice-nice to make up for it.
I am not politically correct. I simply WILL NOT kowtow to a condescending, political policy to anyone of any race. "...that all men are created equal..." seems to be a particularly poignant quote right now. Why should we show favoritism to any race that claims all they want is equality.
In closing, I want to ask a question...How can someone be considered equal while so many concensions are made toward them?
-
Yep drunky.
I encourage anyone to go visit their local colleges/universities and count how many scholarships are avaliable for WHITES ONLY.
Then see how many are avaliable for women, hispanics, blacks, asians (including pacific islanders), etc.
Last time I checked:
Whites: 0 (surprise!)
Women: 2
Blacks: 6
Hispanics : 4
Asians : 1
Avaliable to all: 12
So there you see how "equal" a low income family white boy is "equal" in terms of educational scholarships.
A few years back I was trying to apply for one of the scholarships, I was a bit tight on money but not that down money wise. The councelor that was helping me basically told me that looking at my grades, I could not apply for any of the 12 scholarships avaliable to me. I was a bit bummed, but hey, I tried at least. The next person in line who came into her office was a friend of mine, who was *visibly* hispanic; he greeted me, I exchanged a few words with him (in spanish) as I left the office and he came inside.. and this woman stops me and asks me if I was hispanic. I told her yes (I have dark yellow hair, light white skin and english for me is like a 2nd native language so she couldnt tell).
Instantly she had 2 scholarships avaliable to me. I was like WTF? They required LOWER standards academically and gave a bit more money than the 12 avaliable to all.
I left her office that day seriously pissed off. My friend got the scholarship he so badly needed and I hope others in the line got it too. But as I walked out the isle, I noticed that 90% of those applying for the scholarships were not black, or visibily hispanic or asian. Some of them I knew were working their arses off just to pay college and rent.
A really sad way to practice equality imo :(
-
My friend, who is white, got a scholarship from to study business from Drexel-Burnham. They said the strong point of his application was his community service. He did not mention that his community service had been a court-imposed sentence.

I do not want to be black.. I allways felt fortunate to be born in California, a middle class white guy in good health and 6 foot tall. all those things seem pretty ok to me.
I dont care if someone is proud of what they are... they certainly should be but... I don't want it jammed down my throat... Martin luther king day... like he is the only human worth having a holiday for? black history month? whiney crap... that black Xmas?? laughable...
Contrast all the black crap being forced on me with St Patricks day which is done with humor... well... I don't mind being Irish but look how well all the forced black stuff has worked on me.
If they had an Irish history month and affirmative action for the Irish and and and... their crap would bother me to.

I went to a McDonalds in L.A. and ( no joke) the walls were covered with large paintings and drawings of only black people.
One was a drawing of a black guy with his shirt off holding a naked baby....... VERY tacky looking artwork, and in a McDonalds?? There was maybe 20 pictures up. What is the point of that I wondered?
I wonder how a McDonalds with large pictures of only white people would go over.

You sure that was McDonalds and not McDougals from the film Coming To America ?
Martin Mull used to do a "History of White People in America" spoof on HBO, with such topics as "Development of Mayonaisse" and "Golf And Business". It was pretty funny.

Was there about 3 months ago, it's a real McDonalds. If I have time, I may go back and take pictures, then turn them in to McDonalds Corp. with a complaint.
It bothered me that nobody would challenge such a thing. No media, no Rev. Jackson.

LOL Midnight. It was either one of two I was at that day, both within a couple miles.
One was on 4292 Crenshaw blvd in LA, the other was on 3602 S La Brea in LA, and I was the only white guy there. Pretty sure it was the one on Crenshaw.
Anyway, it was kind of interesting. The pictures seemed real tacky too me.
