Title: Disgraceful Low Flying - Shocking Video
Post by: cpxxx on May 22, 2003, 06:43:55 PM
I came across this on PPRuNe, the Proffessional Pilots Rumour Network in the military pilots section. I just know some of you guys would appreciate this.

See also page 4 for more incredible video. In Thummo 5 try and see where last Jag goes by. It wasn't following the others is all I can say.  This is exactly the kind of flying we often see in AH but this is real.

PPRuNe is an excellent site for pilots of all sorts. See the Jetblast and the Questions and Answers sections for some tough debates.

HOLY COW!

My dad worked with the guy who flew that F4 Phantom - I remember him telling me the story of this guy and how he buzzed trucks in phantoms while in turkey!!!

Make sure you watch the videos and turn the sound right up. It's an overused word but awesome is the only word appropriate here.

The Phantom pic reminds me of an airshow here years ago. It was held at a local horseracing track. A USAF Recce RF4C made such a low flypast over the commentary box on full reheat that the commentators felt the rather warm and you could see the radio antennae on the roof waving. I think I have a picture somewhere . I must dig it out and post it if I can.

Then there was the time three F15's made a low flypast then went vertical and headed directly for a contrailing airliner overhead. I later found out it was a Middle East Airlines 707. The Captain apparently panicked and reported he was under attack by fighters! He had a point, you really don't expect to be intercepted by three US F15's over Ireland on a Sunday afternoon.

The USAF used to put on a great show in those days.

In the North York Moors where I grew up (in Yorkshire in the North East of England) lambing season is habitually interupted by the RAF's " Tornado Driving School". If you are up on the Moors you can hear a distant rumble as the jets zoom around followed by a tremendous  roar as they come over the nearest hill upside down hugging the ground. Local farmers regularly put in claims to the Ministry of Defence for miscarried lambs. Officially the minimum height is 250 feet, unofficially they think that is far too high..

Good point.

I would also think the risk of FOD would be considerable.

Does ground affect help when you get that low... I imagine it acts as a sort of safety cushion. Keeping the plane from smacking the ground unless the pilot wants it to.

A lot of RNZAF guys went to gulf states when they disbanded our fighter wing. Some of them went to Oman, and there was a couple that I used to go to ATC with that definitely went to Oman - I wonder ... ;)

The C130 shot was faked. The guy who did it explained how on that PPRuNe thread.

Yah crap like that is more common than you think.

When I was in the military back in the 85-91 timeframe, I was working a drop zone one day and a Brigadier General (ex-fighter pilot) who didn't normally fly was making a drop.  Normal drop height is 800 ft FYI, and our unit flies C-130H's.  He literally came in so low over our DZ command vehicles (a standard Chevy Pickup and a Blazer) that if I had been standing in the bed of the pickup I could almost have touched the bottom of the aircraft if I had jumped up a little.  No joke.

Then several years later, our sister unit in Martinsburg WV the 167th Tactical Airlift Wing, lost a C-130 during a training mission.  They were screwing around and flying UNDER high voltage transmission lines (electric power of course) between a set of towers.  In a C-130, this would be very much like flying thru the hanger in AH for real.   Turned out during the investigation that this was common with this unit, and this crew just screwed up.  They clipped one outter wing off as they went under, made it out, but the plane rolled over on its back and augered.  :(

Some pilots have more balls than brains.
