The tax cut bill just passed, thanks to a tie breaking vote by Dick Cheney.
On top of a bigger paycheck, (marginally, anyway) I'll be gettting a check for $400.00 in July for the child tax credit.
Looks like my wife will be getting that new couch she wanted after all!
-
Good new all around (see my CDN$ thread).
We are buying a 42" flat screen plasma TV next week with our little windfall. ;)
-
Which would have the highest return on that windfall?
-
A new couch?
Will that give you the opportunity to post more pictures of your wife here? :D
(I noticed that Curval couldn't help but run in this thread as well!)
*runs*

That money could have been much better spent studying the mating habits of the snail darter or on a significant new exhibition by an gay/lesbian artist.
And you want to use it for educating a kid? Shame!
-
Gofaster..I could be wrong, but wasn't it you who had a windfall a few months ago and who was going to blow it all on a second hand car?
Maybe I missed something in that thread...did Muck suggest a college fund or something and that is why you suggest it here?

I have no kids. Kinda hard to start a college fund if there isn't a social security number to go along with it. ;)
I ended up spending the cash on a vacation to Charleston, South Carolina and the rest is being spent $10 at a time on eBay buying model kits and WW2 books. They're educational, you know, for the kids I'll have some day. :D

I appreciate your concern, Gofaster.
At this time, I have a 529 plan set up or my daughter, which is funded via direct deposit, $100 per month, into an Age Based Asset Allocation Fund. She is only 3 years old, so the portfolio is quite aggresive.
As a secondary option, I have 3 UGMA accounts in place, which are allocated by a GSET format. These consist of 50% Fico Strips, and 50% Equity mutual funds.
I believe her college education will be well funded when the time comes, in 15 years.
Net net, I'm buying the couch.;)

Hey, congratulations! You'll be especially comfy on the new couch knowing that yer kids will be paying for it.

Indeed!
Far better for your children to pay even MORE for more great projects like these:
Here are some examples of this year’s taxpayer-funded pork projects: $90,000 for the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame; $800,000 for the Grammy Foundation; $1 million for a study of bear DNA; and $250,000 to implement the National Preschool Anger Management Project. While each of these funding figures may not seem too large individually, taken collectively they create a gaping hole in the federal coffers we help to fill, paycheck after paycheck.
Cutting Taxes or Paying for Pork? (http://johnboehner.house.gov/News.asp?FormMode=Detail&ID=664)
Why should your children pay for your family couch in arrears when they can pay MUCH, MUCH MORE in arrears to study bear DNA?

Looks like you got your bases covered!
Think of the couch as a long-term investment in a harmonious relationship. ;) And it'll give the little rugrat something to bounce on for awhile! :D

Ya, know, I have often wondered why a government program needed more funding then the cost of inflation. Surely the program was well researched prior to funding and only inflation would affect any additional cost. Why additional funding is needed beyond the cost of inflation is beyond any reasonalbe look at these programs. If a program needs additional funding outside of inflation then that program should be shut down and a new bill should come to the House floor to be voted upon so the current members of the House and Senate can be held liable for this program. This would insure that the programs are better researched prior to its passing the House. This would also force the House and Senate to do the oversite they are charged with. Perhaps we would see some of these "pork programs " come to a screaching halt!

sorry muck, thought that was what you called your man gravy.

Muck is that money your governement give you back or is that money you don't give to the governement ?

i have a good idea one what you should spend that 400 bucks on muck. one thing is a paper bag and im sure you can guess the other.

Frog-
Just the other day I was driving home, thinking about something I read on this very BBS, and was reminded of the comment you made about my wife.
I tried for the life of me to remember who it was who made the comment, but it was so meaningless and insignificant to me, I could not even remember your name.
Once again, I know what I have to go home to every night.
What do you go home to?
*shrugs*
If at any time you'd like to discuss my wife's appearance in person, I'll be happy to oblige you.
Perhaps you'll be attending the con this year?
Maybe we can take the subject up there, without the anonymity and safety provided by the internet.

Just go for a long walk on the beach gently calming her and reassuring her muck. Tiny boobies are not a handicap. You two can work through it.

I would have to think it's money I gave the government that they are giving back to me, until they take it back again.
I would equate it to a loan.:D

You got more money ?
I mean :
Did you gave 375$ and they give you 400$ back ?
or
Did you gave them 400$ they played with it during some month and then gave you 400$ back ?
In the first case I agree it resemble a loan ... in the second case it resemble a robbery :) this money should have stayed in your pocket at 1st.

my children are grown but I can't think of any better investment in children than giving back some of their parents money.

Lighten up Straffo, it was a joke.
I don't recall what I paid in taxes last year, but I can assure you it was a hell of alot more than $400.00.
But the way I see it, you can't avoid it. You're going to pay one way or another. No matter who the politician is, you're going to get it in the tail somehow.
No matter how you slice it, it's $400 more than I had yesterday, and a slightly fatter paycheck come July.
-
I was not sure to have understood that's why I wrote this post :)
Like you each $ (actually € for me ;)) I can put in my pocket is where it should be ...
But I still prefer not having to give 1st to have it back some month later.
During those month I should have made at least some 3% (tax free) with this money when the governement give nothing in return

Believe me, there's nothing I agree with more. I do not enjoy giving the government 31% of my income, and then some.
But there's the old saying about Death and taxes.
If I'm not mistaken, there was no income tax in the United States until the very early 1900's.
-
Only 31% ?
God ! I would be happy to give only 31 % :(
I'm at 38% + all the VAT and all the other kindly attention my governement as for me ...
-
Well, 31% is my federal tax bracket.
Then you have to add in the State of New York, who gets 12%.
And if you live in New York city, there's the 7% (I think) there.
I live on Long Island, so we don't pay city tax...we pay Property tax. About $2000 a year.
Nice, huh?

straffo the whole thing is being misrepresented. the govt is in debt and they are cutting taxes to use the same reagan voodoo economics the rich favor so much. they throw the 97 percent of our population that are wage slaves a few hundred bucks and give the rich multi thousand dollar cuts to make it fair.
it guts the economy every time. sigh watch the economy skyrocket.
the real story is the conservative party believes their is to much tax and would if it was 1% like catholics like the pope and nazis like racial homlands consevatives like tax cuts ( biased to the rich to make it equal ) " said with sarcastic voice" just how it is and always has been. greedy rich men.

better than nothing but less than half of what Bush wanted ...
so when it doesn't stimulate the economy as much as they'd like, ya think the dumbacrats will stand there and point fingers . don't see how they can being less than half ....

Just remember that it was Republicans, not Democrats, who forced the Bush administration to compromise to less than half the figure. Karl Rove chewed out Senate Majority Leader Frist for allowing moderate Republicans to stray from the president's plan, but ultimately the moderate Republicans forced Bush to decide between half the tax cut or no tax cut at all.
And so goes Congress.

I fail to see of a tax return would stimulate anything other than one month in the year and make an artificial "burp" on the curves.
I don't know how your fiscal year is made but isn't this return made to appear when there is some deadline ?

Perhaps we should look at cutting the snail darter before police and firefighters. Wouldn't that be wiser. There are 40 years of worthless programs the Dems have put in place!
Ya, know, you can still turn around and write a check to the government if you feel you aren't paying your fair share. You should be writing a check today for $400.00 for each child you have in order to keep the police and firefighters on the job. You shouldn't ask others to pay before you "do the right thing"!!
The deficit will disappear when the American economy kicks into high gear. The increase in revenues will pay it back only if Congress holds the line on spending and doesn't spend $2.00 for every $1.00 increase in revenues like they did in the '80's!
-
im sorry i didnt realize america was such an awesome place for the working class in the 19th century and not just the rich few. tax cuts do nothing for the economy and im glad the city of portland is putting its children first and will be chargeing me an extra 300 bucks a month so they are able to keep its schools open. Im really proud that it was put to a vote and close to 60 percent of those voted thought it was a good idea as well.
remember when they cut taxs before they destroy the pork programs like the star wars program, the schools and civil service jobs are hurt first. btw one of the richest men in america will now only have 3 percent of his income taxed while his secritary will continue to have close to 30 percent of hers taxed.
what is he going to do with 310million extra but put it in the bank. what if she had thousands back, she would use it to pay off loans or buy a second car, that would stimulate an econmy.
if you like getting pissed on by the rich continue to support these tax cuts fools. you get a couple hundred back they get millions just to put in the bank or their kids trust funds(like mine wohoo)
-
Police and fire are not paid for by federal money...
yes.. I would love to see the money that the feds spend on snail darter habitats and EPA studies that are voodoo science.
The military is paid for by the federal government (our tax money) but it is allways the first thing to get cut.
The feds are like greedy children... the more you give them the more they waste. It is about time that they get some of their allowance cut.
lazs
-
i agree that the feds have more cash then they know what to do wityh, but they are cutting the wrong peoples taxs. when you guys get excited over a few hundred bucks it reminds me of dogs getting excited over a few scraps while the guys making 200k+ are sitting at the table eating the lobster and veal of tax cuts. and even though federal tax cuts do not pay for police and schools directly they do subsidise the states. states that rely on federal cash are going broke. you cant rob peter to pay paul.
-
the states do not pay for fire and police.
Like I said in another thread... if you want to get rid of all this guilt then just check the box on your tax form that says you want to contribute more and give back all the money that your greedy daddy gave you.
lazs
-
oh i have no guilt. you guys get what you deserve. if all you want are scraps while others take it to the bank go ahead and keep support tax cuts that even alot in the republican party didnt want.

"Wrong people"? Tax cuts by definitions "go" to those who pay taxes. I've used quotes around go because that money does really change hands. It just stays with the rightful owner.
Who are the "right people" in your view? You are just spewing an old class warfare, steal from him and give it to me retoric. As someone already said you have every right to decline your share, but this is not what you want is it?
You want me to decline my share
you cant rob peter to pay paul.
So why do you think that it is ok to take money from the rich (just because they are successful) and give it to the poor (just because they are not)
-

I'm not getting any scraps. As a matter of fact I'm not "getting" anything. My income is mine to begin with. The gov's will simply steal less of it.
The tax cut does not give you someone else's money, it lets you keep more of yours. And this is wahy you are so upset I guess. Would you like to get someone's share?
And this is what libs love to do. Faced with the tax cut, at least they want to give it to the "right" people. But then it ceases to become a tax cut. In order to do that you still have to collect the tax from the rich and the give it to the poor. Some tax cut :(
But then again, the libs are masters in redefining the language.

Someone getting a tax cut doesn't get my panties in a wad. I'd prefer it were me, but every cent less the government has to work with is a penny in the right direction.
The only problem I have with it is the double taxation on dividends solution is done in a typical bass-ackwards govt fashion. Instead of letting businesses write it off as an expense (which it is) and leaving it as income (which it is), they're adding another level of red tape with a seperate income type at a seperate rate.
Of course if they did it correctly it would be bashed as tax cuts for big business.
-
Before this crap goes any further...
Frogman.. how much did you pay in taxes last year? Did you even work? You whipped little mamas boy. You come in here and start preaching on tax laws as if you've ever payed a penny in taxes in your life. What... does it upset you that mommy and daddy are getting such a big tax break this year? Its not really their fault they have a 23 year old tard living with them that they can technically still claim as a dependant.
Sorry... I had to vent.

For your government, thats true. Yer aircraft carrier is a shambles, yer military inept, your government morally bankrupt. It's certain the french government gives it's citizens nothing for thier tax dollars.
you should on the other hand give your tax dollars to OUR government.. the one thats been keeping france and it's citizens safe from forigen invaders for the last 85 years.

You can, it is the definition of entitlement programs, paid for by tax dollars.
Tax dollars = Rob Peter
Entitlements = Pay Paul
And I'm glad to hear about Portland schools doing so well.
There is an Oregon Law requiring different schools across the state to be funded equally, I believe on a per student basis. I wonder how a local Portland tax and spending will reconcile with the spending of Florence.

I'm too drunk to read this thread, but did some no talent bellybutton clown actually come in here and argue that tax cuts are bad for the economy?

No, a 23 year old living with Mommy and Daddy said that they are
unfair :D
How is your head Funk? Try pickle or sauerkraut juice.

Take it from someone that thought 4 car bombs was a good idea last night (guiness is just wrong), drink a large glass of ice cold light beer, and eat some turkey and cranberry samichs'with stuffing and gravy funkypants. Then sink into the couch and watch 5 hours of racing today.
It's a sweet thing.

WHAAAT!!
I'm going to have to phone my parents from my apartment they aren't paying for while im getting my education they aren't financing when i get a break from flying which they aren't paying for to drive home in the car they dont pay for and have a talk with them in their home which...yep its theirs. Heck when i was but a wee lad learning how to tie my velcro shoes and driving around in a playskool coupe, i had my first job selling vegetables at my own little stand at the end of the driveway. Come to think of it...i can't really remember not having a job which is one of the best things my parents could have given me, a good work ethic. Now i have two jobs on top of school and for a college kid im not doin too bad for myself (even have a large enough budget that im pondering the purchase of my first airplane) and not a damn penny of it has been paid by the "folks" as it were. Maybe thats why i don't understand how someone could be suffering from such chronic laziness (trust me, i loaf) as to require federal government assistance to increase their bellybutton size by 2 inches a month and then cry out they can't find work when there are plenty of jobs out there. Just driving around i see plenty of help wanted signs, even at jobs i had when i was in high school that in their own right, don't pay too bad. (does it take an excessive amount of strength, stamina, or even brain power to operate a lawn mower on a golf course??)
Anyways, froggyboymankiddosport, i've had one lobster in my life and was made sick by it (as were the other 25 kids in my group who had it) and veal is just not appealing. It's not from environment because my folks made themselves a good home and my dad has his own toys and nice cars to show for his hard work, and one day I'll have mine. Oh, by the way...I'll take venison tenderloin 6 days a week and twice on sunday that i had to go out and sit in the woods in the wintertime just to bag. So kwitchersqueakin and get off your bellybutton and get a job which serves two purposes, one it keeps you busy so you dont need to sit and surf the internet all day and a side effect of this will be an immediate stoppage of idiocy seeping from your pores. Secondly, you'll have more money to get back from the feds...but there's a catch if you want more money back...you've got to give them a hell of a lot more than they're giving you in the first place. Think of it as paying someone $10,000 to get back $200...even when its all said and done you're still $9,800 poorer at the end of april than you were at the end of march.
Ok im done but i'd like to take this time to thank my cousin, Kevin, who does my taxes for me :)

were those comments directed at me?
If so...
Medical/dental insurance through one of my jobs at a fortune 500 insurance company
Tuition reimbursement program through the same company, which is a really nice perk but i still paid for the classes out of pocket so i had the money in the first place through working.
And whats this "i dont need it so nobody gets it crap" comment? If you are "advising" me to exercise caution and be happy that we have government programs that promote laziness so one day when i need them they'll be there? Is that what you're getting at?
Just FYI i work two jobs, one at the insurance company and also the flight line at an airport along with being a freelance local teaching pro.
The formula to be successful really isnt that complicated. Making good decisions and working hard really are big keys to living a good life. Not just hard physically either, putting everything youve got into what your doing really shows and you can spot easily someone who isnt giving 100% at what they are doing and they are generally unhappy with "the system". For some reason the system screwed them over and they think the world owes them something. I was blessed i feel at a young age with a good work ethic and a joy for the simpler things in life. I was taken back when i was sitting in the woods just a few weeks ago turkey hunting with the 13 year old kid from next door to my parents, who own roughly a $750,000 home, $500,000 condo at Snowshoe Mountain resort, as well as a $400,000+ pleasure yacht and of all the things this kid could say to me he said..."This is living" while he was leaning against the trunk of a tree in the dirt sitting out in the middle of the woods. Here's a kid who hasnt known any other life than a "good life" his father has worked hard for (strangely enough mine and his fathers worked their first jobs in the same place at Weirton Steel mill as welders) and now one is an Associate vice president of a major fortune 500 company and the neighbor owns his own construction business and lumber yards. But this kid who as i was saying has known nothing but a "good life" was sitting in the woods and with all these fancy expensive toys around him the one thing he likes the most is to sit in the woods in the dirt hunting.
If you asked me to describe myself i'd say i'm pretty average. 6'0 220 so average build. 2.5 gpa...nothing stellar but gets by. Golf professional, National ski patrol member, private pilot with a hopeful future in aviation all at 19 and i have been able to do all these things simply because i had a job, and kept busy trying to learn new things. In my eyes there is nothing more sad than to see someone able to work not doing because they'd rather sit back in their lazyboy and pout that the world owes them a living when they're collecting an unemployment check.
I have no problem with programs for those who NEED them, the folks that have been laid off and need time to transition and find a job. i have a problem with the folks who ABUSE the programs collecting unemployment and disability when they are perfectly able to get off their lazy bellybutton and get a job. Ive got no beef with someone who was injured on the job and wish i could make it better for them, but the guy or gal whos going to skim off programs for someone else's misfortune i have no respect for whatsoever.

I confess...my father bought me as a birthday present my first set of golf clubs when i was 7 years old...that planted the seed. He took me golfing with him a couple times a year...what father doesn't? From age 12 to 17 i played competitive golf in high school, and from 15-18 worked at golf courses full time in summers as well as putting in weekends/evenings (leagues, UGH!) during school. Working full time gave me plenty of money and all the free golf i could play as well as range balls...so i had plenty of money and nothing to spend it on. So i bought my first car which is what i still drive today, and paid cash for it. Thats a lot of golf a lot of the time, and i got good at the game and know a lot about the game. Passed my PAT the spring of '01 before i graduated high school and taught over the summer. (2 rounds of 75 or better...not a difficult thing to do.
Working now...
Insurance company full time, med/dental/tuition benefits...good pay with very very flexible hours...a good gig indeed. Also part time (1-2 days a week at no more than 10 hrs per week) working the flight line at an airport and what goes along with this is a discounted rate on airplanes...specifically $51/hr for a 172. Its a good gig because i'd probably be at the airport anyways, so now i get paid for it and get cheap rental fees on top of it.
Joined the ski patrol the winter my senior year of high school...volunteer job but guess what...free skiing. I was already a proficent skier after being in the ski club in middle and high school (8th grade was a surprise christmas present and what a great one it was!)
Aviation career hopeful...you bet your scrawny little nosey ass. Moving to florida in the fall to study aviation and apprentice for my A&P, will also stay with the company at a florida office doing nearly the same job...benefits still the same for med/dental/tuition. But thats more than you really should be caring about isnt it?
Anything else you'd like to tell me that can't be done? keep it to yourself.
Also...congrats muck on the check, mine wasnt quite that big but it sure was nice!

Yes they are.
FBI.
NSA.
National Park Service Rangers.
INS.
Federal Marshalls.
Coast Guard.
TSA.
DEA.
just to name a few. Then you got your regulatory commissions, like the SEC, FAA, FCC, EPA, FTC, and so forth.
I wonder who pays the firejumpers during wildfire season...
Incidentally, my local international airport announced 175 federal baggage screening agents were going to be let go due to budget cuts. The announcement was made just before the terrorist threat level was raised to "Orange". Not even 2 years after 9/11/2001 and we're already slipping back to our old ways.

so not a golf pro really just a good golfer. says you
what is the name of the insurance company that offers health insurance to 2 day a week non professional employees ? i honestly want to know that one.
and 2 days a week working and side time to get cheap flyin time at the airport and you can affort to pay for school and a health care and a house and a car. must be very lucrative for a 19 year old.
truly impressive. with no help at all but a set of golf clubs and a swat on the ass.
or your a quibbler
since your so fast to blow your own horn guess how i vote.

You certainly are a busy guy, Golfer.
If all the above you say is true, and I have no reason to doubt you, you really have a great deal of drive and ambition.
It's rare to find that in a 19 year old man.
UGMAW has an A&P certification from his time in the Navy. You may want to pick his brain, next squad night.
Someday I'm going to figure a way out of this career I have and follow my passion into aviation. It seem's you've managed to do more by 19 than I have by 32. WTG.

Only one way to find out.
Golfer, where do you give lessons? I'll swing by. God knows I could use some help with my slice. If he can get me to hit straight and long, he's a pro!:D

Go back and read what he posted a bit slower TOWD.
I know its hard since he didnt spell anything wrong and he used punctuation and all, but he clearly said that he worked full time for an insurance company and part time (1-2 days a week) at the airport.

still sounds like a load of crap anyway you cut it.

Dolf...ive come to the conclusion that you are an idiot. I work 40 hours a week at the insurance company, and 2 days no more than 10 hrs total per week at the airport. that gets me minimums for flying discounts. I live in an apartment with 4 other roommates and if youve got any other questions, you can keep them to yourself. and Yes...i do in fact do well for being a 19 year old kid in college...as i mentioned before im looking into the purchase of my first airplane, ideally i'd have the only model 150 with a straight tail, omnivision, and manual flaps...havent found one that was in good shape yet...so rather than question what i am and am not capable of...get a hobby. and i am also a golf professional which is the PAT i passed, PAT stands for Professional Aptitude Test, which is 2 rounds of 75 or better.
Also...sling lol thanks for that comment...i just now saw it on the topic review list...thanks.
Muck...Freelance golf pro but i'll hook up with ya at the con for a basket of range balls or 18 holes...whichever comes first :-D

Muck...i thought you were retired from the airforce? i saw a photo a while back of what i thought was you...was i mistaken or just didn't i read the text to go with it??
Enough play time with dolf and his idiocy...off to work see ya at 11 tonight.

I've got a box of balls here you can have, if you need them.
The Mutual Fund wholesalers send them over here. Usually Titleists with their silly logo on it. They still don't seem to understand, I only recommend funds to my clients based on fundamentals, not based on which fund company is sending me a $4.00 tee shirt.
But they're free. How can you beat that?
Actually, now that I'm looking...
I've got a box of Top Flite XL 2000 from Franklin Templeton
or
A box of Maxfli MaxDistance 90 Tungstens from Mitchell Hutchins.
Take your pick, and send me your addy. I'll get 'em out to you.

He doesn't need 'em...not if he shoots 75 consistantly.
Me on the other hand...I need 'em.;)
-
You got it Curv.
Hit the E-mail with your address, and tell me which one's you want.
-
send em to whoever wants em if you're giving them away. I havent paid for golf balls in...who knows how long. I was good buddies with the titleist rep...and picked up a trunk full of professionals.
At any rate...bridgestone has a new ball that they released in japan and word is (from a squadmate) that they're the greatest thing since professionals...and that they made him switch. so i'm waiting for my sleeve from overseas. :)
If you're gonna be at the con, maybe i can swing out there since the USMC will be visiting one day during our reunion which just happens to be in dayton.
-
Muck,
It will probably cost more to ship 'em here than they are worth.
If you really are going to the con, bring 'em. I'll trade ya a t-shirt for a box.
