Isn't Glacier Girl the 38 from the Lost Squadron?
-
That's the one.
She's winging with an A-10 today. Cool sight!

Check this story out. I live in Louisville Kentucky. I was sitting in CAD class in high school, my Junior year (99-00), and this old man walks in. He starts snapping a few pictures with the camera around his neck and talks to my teacher. Then he comes and walks around the different computer stations. So I start talking to him and it turns out he went to my high school in the 1930s. Far more interesting, he was a P-38 pilot in North Africa and had ~250 combat hours. He lived up north somewhere and had driven down to Kentucky when he heard about Glacier Girl (which was restored in central kentucky). We talked about the planes in Greenland and about the B17s there too, then he left. I didn't ask him if he had any kills, felt it would have been inappropriate. Not sure if its the same with air-combat, but some fellas get upset when asked if they have ever killed someone.

Yesterday (May 23, 2003) the FAA gave Glacier Girl her “Airworthy” certification to fly. Hours later, I witnessed her first airshow arrival and the first cross-country trip in 61 years.

My wife and I drove up to Middlesboro Kentucky and watched her first flight. It's something I will never forget... It was WELL worth the 14 hour drive from Florida. Just seeing it fly overhead gave me chills...

I know the feeling!

a sad story really, it has been awhile since I read it, but, they just could not stop fighting over the little stuff, so much so that it almost scrapped the whole recovery...
It is wonderfull to see her fly again though!

Pretty cool. I always pictured that bird as bare aluminum. I guess in the original pics I saw in N. Geographic the ice had taken off the paint. Or my memory is shot - which isn't out of the question. l'm waiting to see what else ya got, Oz :)
-
There's a great documentary on the History Channel that's been running about her lately.

This restoration has brought an emotional reaction that I haven't had since I read about this when it happened:

Glad its getting restored.

Early war 38's, most especially the F's were painted an over OD and under Gray, exactly as Glacier Girl is painted now. They got the colors right.

Here are two photos of Glacier Girl winging with an A-10.
I’ll have much better (35mm) photos on a web site in a few weeks.
I’ll post the URL in this thread when it’s ready.

Thanks Ozark, made my day :)

Ozark,
THAT is priceless :-) Thanks buddy
My wife and I have been sort of following it's progress. We have quite a few pictures throughout it's restoration process until it's first flight from various visits we made to the hangar in Kentucky.
I'll print those out and put in the collection if ya don't mind.
