Title: Your Favorite Concert?
Post by: GrimCO on May 24, 2003, 08:34:32 PM
I've been to quite a few good concerts in my day. But there is always one that sticks out your mind.

For me it was seeing the Scorpions last year. Klaus Meine's voice is even more powerful live than it is on recordings. Still Loving You and Winds of Change were absolutely haunting. God, that guy can sing!

Any of you have an absolute favorite concert that stands out in your mind?

Im with Grim on this one. Only that DIO opened, and it was amazing.

Only in Reno can you have security taking your beer bottles at the gate, and pouring them into a plastic glass for you.

Alice Cooper's "Billion Dollar Babies" concert in 1973.  I was so stoned I could hardly walk.:D

I would elaborate, but decorum prevents me from mentioning it here.;)

The Clash stands out because it was one of the 1st concerts I've been to... was around 12 or so and I was a HUGE fan. Managed to weasle my way on stage and act like a complete tard up there. Friends said after that Strummer started to crack up during the song. Also swiped a bass pick that got dropped.

A Rush concert stands out because it was the highest I've ever been at a concert. Mushrooms... and I spent more time watching what was going on in the huge cube thing that hangs in arenas showing the score (whatever it's called) than I spent actually watching the stage. Whenever I did turn to look at the stage it was all about Peart.

Lolapaloozas were always fun.

The 1st Pavement show was one of the most amazing things I've seen.

Biggest regret is never seeing the Pixies live. The show I missed (something else was going on that night and surely they'd be back another time) was the last show they ever played before breaking up.

Close second is any American Music Club show, any Mojo Nixon show, various and sundry Robyn Hitchcock gigs, Screamin' Jay Hawkins, and Dick Dale at the Belly Up in Solano Beach.

Well, the Scorpions is still the absolute #1 for me.

Metallica at the Orange Bowl in Miami being second. I've seen Metallica 5 times, but that show was the absolute best. They played their old stuff mostly, even though that show was the most recent.

Just saw the Eagles last week. GREAT show. Joe Walsh absolutely stole the show. Love that guy!

My favorite concert was the one in which John "Cougar" Mellencamp got hit in the head with a beer bottle.

LOL

At that same Metallica concert I was referring to, Kid Rock opened the show. Some love muffin chucked a full beer and hit him square in the chest.

I guess they were filming some of his shows, and it wound up making it into one of his music videos...

Supertramp  at the Berkely Theater in 1975 they remind me alot of Coldplay  today.
Golden Earring  at Winterland. I think also in 1975. The musicianship of some bands live, just makes your jaw drop.

Grateful Dead shows are a real kick with staff passes, but my favorite overall concert was the Tacoma U2 Achtung Baby concert.  That was sharp.

My fave moment at a concert was in Toronto...The Police Picnic, during Joe Jackson's preformance..a classmate of mine whipped a half eaten hotdog and hit poor Joe in the face..."You BASTARDS don't appreciate anything!!"..he said as he walked off stage ending his set after 10 minutes.

My favorite concert was AMAZING.

I like rock mostly, but I got to attend a private concert by Alabama about 10 years ago and it was GREAT.

There were only about 300 people there and I was nearly close enough to touch them.

Alabama has so many major number one's and other hits..... and they can perform. I, being a musician, was very impressed by their live performance
.

They kept playing songs that I instantly knew....and I'm no country fan.

TOOL is one I'd definitely like to see, but haven't been able to yet...  :(

On my all time wish list is Mark Knopfler/Dire Straits, but he cancelled his tour after he had a bad wreck on his motorcycle. My wife and I were going to plan a trip to England coinciding with any concerts he was putting on. Guess we have to wait till he heals up to make the trip across the pond.

Grateful Dead.. 197?  It was in San Jose at Spartan Stadium, and the local chapter of the Hells Angels were there. In fact they filed in and sat all around me and my date. Turned out to be one hell of a party :)

Little Feat live... incredible. Saw them twice as the opener for bigger names... stole the show.

How about Charlie Daniels opening for Jethro Tull... :) 1976

The Who and the Dead.. Candlestick Park Day on the Green 1976.

Genesis.. Trick of the Tale tour... 1977.

U2-Zooropa at Autzen Stadium in Eugene ranks at the top.  Jimmy Buffett at Shoreline, Greatful Dead at Autzen (more of the experience then the music)...any OUTDOOR concert is a favorite.

Jeez funked, you're gonna tell me you like the Soft Boys next.

I saw Screamin Jay in London maybe 10 years ago. Fanbloodytastic, and Robyn H on tour with both the Egyptians and solo, all of which ranks high.

Lords of the New Church at Salisbury Arts Centre 1989 was prolly the best time I ever had, and the best music was Zappa at the BIC.

Saw David Wilcox at Ontario place, sitting outside drinking rum and cokes.  Meet some very cool people and after the show we watched a mini-riot occur on the stage.

We then staggered over to the Diamond and attended The Phantoms CD release party.

Great night.

Back stage at the Stones show in October was cool too.

The only time I saw Robyn Hitchcock it was in this smallish room of the Knitting Factory in NYC. I've got one of his souveniers from the show sitting on a shelf beside my desk. Instead of shirts etc. he had all these 8" high little orange traffic pylons... and with a black felt marker he made individual works of art on them. Did he have the same kind of thing when you guys saw him? I thought it was a cool idea for show merch.

One pretty cool thing.... He made this movie called Storefront Hitchcock (shot by Jonathan Demme - Stop Making sense). It's basically a live show shot over a couple of days in a storefront on 14th st. The windows were kind of tinted so you could barely make him out from the street, and from the street he had his back to you while he played to an audience inside the store. (I've never seen the movie, btw.).

Anyways, people on the street didn't really know what was going on so it was just a bunch of passers by, pretty much. But on my lunch break I went and checked it out, scarfing down a pizza as I watched (they had speakers set up so you could hear). In the middle of a song he turns around and looks at me, then stops the song and turns back to face the audience. He then went into a (I swear to god) 5 minute rant about how I was some kind of Damien Omen type character who was mentally willing him to do **** through telepathy or some bizzarre thing. I had no idea what to do. I hated the attention but I couldn't just bolt. I had to stand there while he went off and folks were crackin' up (cuz it was some pretty funny sheeat...).

I heard it never made the movie. Have you guys seen it and was it any good?
