Please pardon the poor lighting, (and questionable photographic skills) but I thought I'd share these with you anyway. You've probably heard the story of Glacier Girl, a P-38 that was retrieved from deep beneath the ice in Greenland and restored. She made her first air show appearance this past weekend in Columbia, Mo. Here are a few shots:

Sorry, none of her flying, no point trying with my disposable point-and-shoot. She looked real nice in a heritage flight with an A-10 Warthog, tho...
And a few bonus shots:
A corsair:

A Hellcat:

A Warhawk:

And a pair of jugs :D

Heh, Oshkosh is also a "famous" college for insane amounts of alcohol consumed by the college crowd :D AKA "Sloshkosh"
Very nice pics btw!

Oshkosh Wisconsin it the location for the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) airshow. They claim to be the "Busiest Airport in the World" on that week, and I have no doubt they are. It's a great show. It lastes a week, and it takes several days just to walk around to see everything. It also has a big selection of warbirds.
Several years ago, there was a C47 with skiis at the show. I checked it out, and it was all about the Greenland expedition. They had a top turret of a B17 they recoverd from the lost group of aircraft. The B17 was crushed, so the plan was to go after one of the P38's the next year. The next year, they had a boot in the Flymart with all the parts of the P38 on display, with pictures of how they recoverd the aircraft.
The parts were mostly in great shape. I rember the names and some hand drawings on the parts that were not exposed when the aircraft was assembled. They must have been put there by the people who assembled the aircraft when it was built.

What bugs me about Glacier Girl is they flew her once.... and thats it. Now she sits there looking like a caged animal.... its sad. The plane looks like she just rolled out of the factory. They should fly her more often.

The airshow at Columbia wasn't the first time the rebuilt plane had flown. Just her first airshow appearance. I saw a TV documentary about the project, so the plane had flown at _least_ once before.
You mean they're not going to fly her anymore? That would, indeed, be sad.
They put two new engines in and received FAA certification just before the Columbia show, I was told.
