Title: How the heck can I rid my apartment of fleas??
Post by: Pfunk on May 28, 2003, 04:51:24 PM
I have tried everything from bombing the place twice, to frontline on the cat, and some spray stuff for the carpet and yet my apartment is still infested.  Can ANYONE please give suggestions or surefire ways (besides tossing the cat away) to get rid of these damn pests.

Frontline on the cat and fleabomb the next week.  Then use frontline as often as recomended.  They will go away eventually.

If your neighbors have fleas, and they don't do anything about it, I fear that your actions will be fruitless.  We have two dogs and a cat... never had fleas, you have my sympathy.. good luck.

You must repeat bomb the place after the flea eggs have time to hatch.  It could take 3 or 4 generations to get them all.  They are persistent little monsters.

Take off and nuke the site from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.

We bought some stuff to put on the cat that kills ticks and fleas and flea eggs.  You put it on them like once a month.  Then we bought some stuff to put on the carpet that you leave on for 30 minutes and then vacuum up.  It has seemed to work so far.

had that happen to me in Cali...
bombed the place, bathed the cats
repeat repeat repeat..

it's those little friggin eggs.. they're like nuke-proof time-bombs..

eventually you'll get them all..
oh.. and keep the pets indoors or you'll have to begin all over again...

First, if you live in an apt and your neighbor has fleas, you're screwed.

I went for the overkill approach when my pet got fleas.

I put a flea collar on him, gave him a flea bath, then laid on the flea powder.  Then I bombed the house.

The next day, another bath, more powder.

A few days later, bombed the house again, another bath.

By this time I saw no more fleas, but a few days later I bombed the house again, another bath.  Just to be sure.

I put powder on him daily, and kept the collar on for a few months.

I haven't had a flea problem since.  The fleas that escaped probably still pass that story on to their kids.

Knew a guy once who decided his carpet was infested.  Moved himself and the cat to the neighbours for the night and left an open cannester of....um.....damn can't remember if it was butane or propane or what, gas anyway.   Then the idea was to air the place out for another day but the mail man was smoking..........

got rid of the fleas though.

If the cat goes outside and then comes back in, he's bringing new pests into your home.  Bombing will not do a whole lot against that.  Good luck.

Go to your vet, ask for a product called revolution.  I live in North Carolina, and it has been a really wet May.  That means that fleas and ticks are out of control.  My dog goes in and out all she chooses.  We do not have a flea problem anymore.  It took three months, but once it took, they nolonger can bother.  When the little bastages get on the dog and bite, they die.  Revolution is the best for dogs, and I believe it works on cats too.  One last thing, if they are in your carpet, get "Seven Dust" or plain Boric Acid Powder.  Lightly sprinkle it over your ENTIRE carpet (under furniture too) and then use a broom too force it down into the carpet.  Leave for one week than vaccuum it up.  If they persist, (I have never had to repeat) do it again.  Boric Acid is non toxic, but total death to anything with an exoskeleton, fleas, ticks, spiders, etc.  Basically it dries out their joints, so that they can not move, and they die.  It also dries out and kills egg sacks too. Good luck though, been there, and am now flea free.

OK, time to get country...Go to the local Farm Supply store and buy a bottle of cattle spray concentrate. Make sure it contains mostly pyrethren. It will run you about $10-$15. Mix it full strength and spray the house. Make a 2nd batch of weaker concentrate (read instructions on weight ratio) for your cat. You will have enough left for several years. Kills feas, ticks, mites, lice, you name it.

Revolution also repels or kills mosquitos.  It's becoming the top choice if your animal goes outside.  As ya know, skeeters are the vector for heartworms, so keeping them off your pet is a good idea.  Supposedly only Revolution controls fleas, ticks and skeeters.  I'm switching to it when my frontline runs out, because I think it's also less expensive here, for cats anyways.

Even if your cats are indoor only, they can still get fleas, mostly because you will go outside and bring them back in.

For cats, Advantage is probably the best. Apply it as often as the label says, and if the cat gets wet, reapply. Flea collars are a waste of money.

For the apartment, vacum the hell (or better yet carpet clean) the entire place to get up most of the eggs and larvae. Throw away the vacuum bag right away, so the eggs don’t hatch. Then get Knockout Premise Spray and spray everywhere, especially under furniture. The eggs and larva like the shade. This is why bombers/foggers don’t work so well; they usually don’t get under furniture.  Repeat this as often as the label says. You have to go through a couple of flea life cycles to get them all.

By the way, make sure you don’t get the Knockout spray to go on dogs, which you can’t use on cats.
