Well, I hear the French and Germans are thinking of making a Navy again. Maybe they can pitch in too!

Your too late.
the Chinese bought it for $2million and are going to turn it into a shopping mall. Seriously.

That's good, because then the Chinese will build all their carriers copying 50 year old technology!

LOL...and all their sailors have that "bowl" haircut. 2 billion people, all look alike ;)

The story says it is the last British WW2 carrier still afoat. I hope they can raise the money to make it a museum in Britain.
-
it should be a museum or at least a research vessel.
You realize just how incredible it would be to have a fricken carrier used as a mobile maritime research vessel? J. Custoeu (sp?) would flip out in his grave.

If you did, how would anyone know which country built it?:p

Sigh. Those were the days. When the Royal Navy really did rule the waves.
I'd pay a few more quid in taxes for her to be laid up as a museum. Put her alongside HMS Victory, Nelson's flagship.

by waves, you mean the English Channel? :)
-
No fool, I mean every ocean on the planet. :)
-
cmon man, we all know that the sole reason why the Royal Navy went all over the world was because the 'channel had 1 major strategic problem for them: The french were upwind ;) :D :D
-
yeah, back in the day.... when 3 groats would get ya a shilling and a Ha'penny was real money ;)

by default ?
ya that african navy was tough though :)

No Eagler, not by default but by superior seamanship and strategy. The RN defeated the, French, German, Dutch and Spanish navies at different times when the US navy ran flat bottomed barges. LOL
Did you you that between the wars, it was seriously considered that the next war may be between the USN and the RN? Caused by a US attempt to muscle in on parts of the British Empire?
All in the past now. It would be nice to see HMS Vengeance preserved. But I daresay it won't happen. Ironically perhaps US money might do it. I think an aircraft carrier would make a great cruise ship.

WOW, skeet shooting with a Phalanx gun! Coooooooool!
And just think of the shuffle boards they could lay out!
And you could rig up a catapult ride too!
Oh and cpxxx, what Navy hasn't been beaten by the RN? Hmmmm?
-
lol by default? You have heard of Trafalgar, where the RN destroyed a numerically superior combined French and Spanish fleet? The RN won battle after battle. Blockaded every French and Spanish port of importance.
They obviously didn't teach you history very well back in your day, Syz.
The War of 1812 turned in Britain's favour (through the RN) when Napoleon was defeated, and the massive armed forces around Britain itself were free to engage the US. There was no way the US Navy could match the RN's strength. A ceasefire was signed shortly afterward.

You all noticed that that article is almost a year old? I did a 'what's this' post in Feburary of this year. Minas Gerais/Vengeance had apparently at that time been bought by the Chinese, what has actually happened since then I'm not sure. It certainly wasn't at Devonport last week when i was there.

Yeah ya can't knock the RN, we're responsbile for sooooo many sunken ships all over the world. Recreational divers owe the RN a huge debt.

Don't know what you're talking about Dowd. I never said anything about default and I simply asked a question. What Navy hasn't the RN defeated? I think you saw the waving flag and thought it was me. It was Eagler I think.
