I think AKIron asked about Diplomacy on another thread.
If you haven't played before, it's a fantastic game. It's especially enjoyable using the play-by-email judge system.
http://www.diplom.org
Everything you need to get started can be found at the above link. Games can go quickly or as I prefer, can last for months.
If you haven't heard of it, you've probably heard of games like "Risk" or "Axis and Allies." This game is vaguely similar but much more difficult and has absolutely no element of chance.

Love that game.
Tried playing by email with a bunch of high school friends that went to different universities. Made a big 2x3 foot wall map, used tacks for units, planned moves with dry erase markers. Got no work done for about a month because every time I'd sit down at my desk, I'd start staring at the map and plotting...
Man it's fun.

Thanks for the link Sandman, I'll check it out.

Skip the maps and tacks. There's a program called "Realpolitik" that takes all the hassle out. You can find it and other mapping software at the Diplomatic Pouch (http://www.diplom.org).

But then my moves wouldn't be as well planned, because I wouldn't stare at my map for 6 hours everyday. :D

AGW has its enthusuasts also. They host Dippybirds about once per month, with turn by tuirn updates posted in the Off Topic board. They are always looking for more people
-
I'm involved in my first Diplomacy game right now with some fellas from AGW. It is a riot! What a hoot!
Hehe, the greatest thing about the game is that your allies and enemies can(and will) change from turn to turn. Lots of negotiating involved in this game, and it's all done via email.
I *highly* recommend this to anyone with an interest in the time period, or anyone who likes a good, solid thinking game.
Sandman, if you're thinking of starting up a Diplomacy game for AH'ers, please consider this a petition to get me in on the action! :)

I'll have a piece of that. Do I need to buy anything? How much is the game?
-
Dowding, you don't need to buy anything, you just have to get the game name and password from the "Game Master". How it worked with the game I'm doing with the guys at AGW, was that vadr advertised for players on AGW, and the first seven guys to log onto his game, were in.
All we need now is a Game Master. Sandman?
Btw, forgot to add that this is a great game for role playing. I'm the Russian Tsar in my game, and in my communications to the other players, I try to sound like a Tsar, and use expressions that he might've used. It's a whole lot of fun.
-
I don't understand. Do I need the board game? I don't actually know what Diplomacy is! :D
Sounds cool though.
-
I think its an computer game dowding :)
-
hehehe It was a board game before? :D
-
Dowding, in it's original format, Diplomacy was(and still is) a board game. But recently, it's been converted for play on the internet via email and using a browser based interface.
Go here http://www.diplom.org/ and start reading.

I run a traditional game of diplomacy in the office (I own the game, and yes, it's a board game). Players submit orders once a week and I compile the results of the turn (retreating and building done at the beginning of the week if necessary). In the middle of the week, people negotiate via email and in person. All orders are submitted via email. A typical game usually lasts around 4-5 months. At the end of every game, I ask people how much time the game killed. The official answer is usually 20 minutes a week, but players have admitted to sometimes spending hours plotting, planning, and lying to their fellow players.
(tons of fun)

Actually, it was me that asked about it Sandy. Best "game" I ever played. I will have to look into it on link you provided. Thanks for that. Maybe I can be better at that than ACM in AH!
Meanwhile, I'm having to have my meds changed because of the sympathetic schizophrenia created by your latest Avatar.!! So how many personalities have you been diagnosed with now??
:D :D

They've been running one of these on AGW for a few months now. http://agw.warbirdsiii.com/bbs/showthread.php?s=&threadid=20926

I've never done the game master thang before, but I think I know how to set it up... I'll give it a shot if you guys are willing.
