Well someone in MA asked for a rundown on this game. I dont really have the time to go fully into this game all at once, so I am going to do it in parts. First the game overveiw.
The core of the game is traditional combat flight-simulation – the player takes command of a thundering jet fighter and engages in aerial dogfight with enemy fighters while seeking and destroying ground targets. The game is set in the 1960s – when aviation technology was still primitive, but advancing at a rapid pace. Some missiles and guided weapons would be available later in the game, but true to history, they remain somewhat unreliable and inaccurate. Most air battles involve visceral, in-your-face gunfights, and the player’s skill at outmaneuvering his opponents remains the key to victory and survival.
The game features dynamic campaign, set in a fictional background, that spans the entire decade of aviation history. The player starts the game with the F-100 Super Sabre – a simple aircraft with basic avionics, no radar and no missile. But as the campaign progress, new technology will be slowly introduced for the player to discover, including new aircraft, more powerful weapons, improved avionics and deadlier threats. Some technologies, such as surface-to-air-missiles, drastically shift the balance of power, and the player must continuously change and adopt new tactics in order to be successful. By the end of the campaign, the player will be flying the sophisticated F-4 Phantom II, exchanging guided missiles with MiG-21 while dodging radar-guided SAMs!
The campaign can be played normally, where the player takes on a role of an air force pilot. In this traditional role, the player is rewarded for successful career with medals and promotion. In addition, the player may also take on a role of a mercenary pilot; this adds another dimension to the gameplay by allowing the player to build up his pilot’s abilities, resources and finances. He or she can earn money for target destruction and mission accomplishment, and the profits can be used to buy ammo and fuel, fix battle damages, upgrade the aircraft, or buy bigger and better weapons. This added element of role-playing provides the player with more incentive to fly that next mission and keep on playing the game.
In addition to the campaign, the game also features Instant Action and Single Mission modes of play. Instant Action immediately puts the player into the cockpit with a single mouse click, while Single Mission enables the player to design custom missions and pilot his favorite aircraft. These two additional modes of play let players tailor the game experience to match their own playing style.
The list of player-flyable aircraft planned for initial release includes the maneuverable F-100 Super Sabre, fast and sleek F-104 Starfighter, ground attack A-4 Skyhawk, and of course, big and powerful F-4 Phantom II. Additional planes will most likely be made available post-release; the game is designed with future expansion in mind, and we plan on supporting the game with add-ons and sequels. More importantly, we also plan on supporting the user community in creating after-market modifications, including user-created missions, campaigns, maps, and aircraft.

Now no good reveiw would go without screen shots, now here is the part where I am spliting it up. I am going to go into aircraft profiles. So the first aircraft I am going to reveiw is the A-4E SkyHawk. The A-4 Skyhawk was designed to meet a US Navy requirement for a carrier-borne medium attack aircraft in the early 1950s. The Navy's specification called for an aircraft weight of approximately 30,000-lbs but Edward Heinemann submitted a design that was remarkably light, weighing only half the specified amount. At first, the Navy couldn't believe such a light aircraft could meet the range and payload specifications, but this small jet not only met all the requirements, it also proved to be extremely versatile and effective. The A-4, also known as "Heinemann’s Hotrod" and the "Bantam Bomber", began entering service in 1956 and remained in frontline service with the Navy and Marines until 1985, seeing a number of engine revisions. It has a conventional cruciform tail section and a delta shaped wing with distinctive air intakes close to the canopy glass. The A-4 Skyhawk can carry a wide variety of external weapons on two wing-mounted pylons and one under the fuselage, and is as maneuverable as many jet fighters of the day.
This is by far my favorite plane in the game the A-4 is just fun to fly. Its small, fast, and agile. So far I have two air to air kills in it. Now that may not seem like alot, but if you play the game you will find thats pretty damn good. The AI of the emy pilots on the hard setting really makes you work for you kills. Toss in missles that dont always work, and it gets even harder. My first air to air kill came from a burst from my guns. The second was a lucky shot on a Mig 17 pulling away from me. I got a great seat shot with a sidewinder on him.
Air to ground however is where this plane shines. In the close air support roll it is a blast to fly. Nothing like seeing those green tracer rounds fly past you as you drop some naplam, or firing your LAU-3/A rockets at tanks below. I am not sure how they did it in real life. But I am pretty sure those pilots sat in specialy designed seats that held there really large nuts in place.

I think what I like most about this game is the depth, kills are not easy, flying is not easy. There are no kill messeges that come up. You do not know sometimes if you killed a target or not. The fog of war really comes into play in that game. There have been times when the smoke on the ground is so heavy, and the fighting is moving so fast, the lines become blured. You watch movies where the pilot refuses to drop his bombs, becuz he cant tell friend from foe, playing this game really creats that feeling. Its up to you the pilot, and your skills to make the call, that could save or kill friendly troops.
This is by far the most fun I have had in a flight sim in a very long time. Sure its buggy, thats becuz the game is not finished, they are still building it. They will keep on building it, adding new aircraft, new missions. Plus there are a ton of 3rd party made aircraft floating out there. Check it out.
-
I did. Too buggy. Actually I decided to postpone my review of the game for a magazine until they have fixed it good, right now it would be a 4/10 being generous.

-
Thanks for the review, I was thinking of buying this at the weekend but SimHQ's review had been taken down for a re-write and Combat-Sim still requires payment and there's not many other sites I trust with their reviews.
-
It is a Briliant Sim that is NOT FINISHED yet. MP does not Work yet- no Mission builder and has many bugs in the campaign. With that said- the whole sim is completely modable. The community is hard at work making addons. What I like most about the game is the randomness of the missions. The same mission will look completely different each time you play it because it allows for the mission builder to specifiy the probability of seeing certain planes and objects in the game. For example, 1- Mig21-prob 50% , 3 Mig-19 Prob 20% etc etc. Each time you fly it looks completely different. FB's has nothing close to this. The AI is very very good in this sim and the graphics surpass the origonal IL2. Its just waiting to be completed with next patch.
-
Mmmm I had kinda written this off my list when it first came out and everyone howled how buggy it was. Believe it or not it's only just been released here in the UK (yeah slow or what!) I think they are very mindful of the original release as the DVD box here bears the "New Improved Patched Version" sticker :) I picked it up, put it down, picked it up and put it down again in the shop not sure whether to buy it so bought Raven Shield instead until I could find a review. I noticed that Hyperlobby supports Project Strike Fighters so that's a plus. Is the multiplay completely borked still? I'd like to fly it online. The few screenshots I had seen made SF look quite ordinary but those posted above look much better and I'm upgrading soon anyway so the more eye candy the better :) What's the ETA on the new patch? are things so bad it's worth waiting till the patch comes out before buying?
-
Another point in it's favour is dedicated TrackIR support :D it rocks in IL2:FB!
-
The community is great, except that they're too lazy to do a proper flight model and release planes that are visually stunning, but feel like crap to fly. Meh.
Also the roll inertia? Or whatever it is that keeps you rolling or pitching even when you center the stick. Get rid of that and you have a decent game.

Actually the FM is pretty good IMHO. There are still some bugs but I've yet to have it crash on me. You can get it very cheap on eBay. It's not something to get addicted to, but if you are a fan of big loud silver birds, it offers something that no other sim can offer.
-
Yep, fun Fligt Sim, linked are a few more Pics (ignore the first couple of FB Pics ;)). I always get creamed on HyperLobby, but if you want a real live SFP1 opponent (target drone), gimme a yell.

Where can I get the game? I would like to try and test it as well? Went to website but only saw patches.
-
Think I'll try and pick this up in the week
-
It's another example of how much strategy first sucks. Yet another game that they forced out the door unfinished. I don't have it installed right now as the online experience is not there with the first patch. Every once in a while 1v1 will work online but that's no fun for me. I'm waiting for the 2nd patch which I thought would be here by now or I wouldn't have bought the game when I did.
I did have some fun with it in single player mode, but it got old quick for me...

I got mine off eBay for $5.99.

XNachoX your right- in way- about the addons. The A-1 when it was first released was a dog. Its been imrpoved like 5 times now. Have you tried the F-86? Its the best F-86 I've ever seen. Oh ya- there's this guy Mitch ..I think he's a pro. art dude in real life. Look at his Hi-res skins. The best I've ever seen in any SIM including FB's.

I'll check out the F-86. ArmourDave released the F-105 with no real FM either...made me mad as it's a great airplane. I'll re-install the game and check out the new stuff. S!

They did that for a reasion. They have been working on this game since late 00. There hope is to add on as they go. Lets keep in mind they made no secret about the game being unfinished. They say that on the web page. Also its not a 49$ game. Like some other un-finished games that I will lean un-named. Its 15$ at the store, there will be a 2nd patch out with-in a few days give or take. That should fix alot of the problems. I love this game, maybe even more so than AH :o
-
Hmm think I'm sold, got any community links for this sim? links for add-ons etc that you speak of?
-
So I can order my own game through the internet if I cant hook one up here. Way to go, thnx. Bling bip ping poop badong gong ging. LOL, I dont know WTF that means.

Oh now I remember, it means I love you Umm Phoofoo.

The sense of Speed is Amazing too. Being on the Deck at 500 mph is so much fun in that game. TK's (the developer) vision of having a sim that wouldn't be bogged down w/ avionics details but with good flight models and complete modability is going to be a winner if he gets the MP fixed w/ this new patch. I've had a lot of fun with the offline campain but w/ the bugs I've shelved it for now. But w/ the second patch- I may put down FB's and AH for a long time.

BTW AKIron, you got one more kill than I do. I mostly fly close air support missions. I like pushing mud rather than killing planes.

This sim is a nice 20$ dust collector. Nothing more, nothing less.

First its not 20$. Second have you even played the game?
FYI I couldnt let you show me up AKIorn.

Thats 15 kills, even a dirt dog gets lucky sometimes. :)

It was on sale at BestBuy for 20$ (so it was 20$). I only enjoy doing AA combat but due to "great" effects in this game its impossible to do so. There is a majic distance at which game turns off visual model of the enemy aircraft so they just disapear right in front of you. With out using visual aid (icons) I can't fight anything in close fight, each time I extand from a fight to gain adventage, bloody game turns off enemy model and ...........................we ll I can't see them.
After first patch I didn't see any changes, TK promosed new patch about 2 months ago. I still don't have it.
I'm not going to waist my time with POS game that is half bellybutton made.
-
Didn't see any changes after 1st patch???? There were a number of big changes including a number of effects that were added. There are two big moding projects going on right now. First- Korean War -including a sweet looking B29 (already done: F86, A-1, P-51(mishaped nose) and Mig-15). + a great looking Vietnam mod. Oh ya- and a cool looking Cuban Missle crises Mod. If they materalize + the 2nd patch makes it- LOOK OUT!!!
-
Adding special effects isn't fixing broken software. And I hate open software. Any joe can add what ever FM they want.
(You will not see any MS sims on my system for that reason)
-
Ya.."any Joe" but you don't have to download any Joe's FM's. If your refering to Online play- StrikeFighters has a file checking system to insure everyone is on the same playing field. I'd rather play with "any Joe" than with the World According to Oleg -I'm from a society known for being honest- Maddox. I still don't know why the VVS even bothered upgrading from I16's in the war...lol...(after playing IL2)
-
Well guys, keep me posted on when they polish all the bugs. Right now, landing an aircraft is really comical.
Daniel
-
Probably because you aren't fighting the I16 properly.
If you are playing AI, thats the problem.
Every game is the same way: AI either sucks, or is way too good. All AI planes run simplified models at 110% power + boost at all times.
Even the Ace AI in the I16 is very beatable- with the proper tactics.

Was this the sim that had a special Wal-Mart release of a beta copy that they sold to the general public for around $15? I seem to recall a big stink about that from the US flight sim consumers who demanded a refund and felt betrayed. After all that business, I sort of wrote this sim off as another "IAF".
Then again, I like this:
In addition to the campaign, the game also features Instant Action and Single Mission modes of play. Instant Action immediately puts the player into the cockpit with a single mouse click, while Single Mission enables the player to design custom missions and pilot his favorite aircraft. These two additional modes of play let players tailor the game experience to match their own playing style.
When I was flying "US Navy Fighters" (and its add-ons as they came out) I did maybe the first 2 campaign missions, then learned the mission editor and never went back. I fell in love with the whole creativity aspect of making my own "world" using the game's objects library. I haven't found a good jet sim since. Maybe this "Strike Fighters" will be it.
One thing I never got over with "Su-27 Flanker" was the complexity of the avionics systems. I think my brain exploded during the radar training portion. Any chance the pilot cockpit workload has been simplified?
-
I'm kinda chuckling at the rave reviews some are giving this game. I mean, if Aces High flew like this game, the whining would be unbearable.
the flight phsyics are way off, especially down slow. These birds won't spin, much less stall...and the developer said all along its a "light" sim. So some of you guys who like a bit more reality (like me)...some areas really lack.
One of the first things I enjoy doing in any new sim is to do a few takeoffs and landings to feel the airplane(s) out. Try it, I won't say what I thought....but for those who have the game and are raving (or silently agreeing)...just try it. Compare to the feel of Aces High, etc. Aces High may not look nearly as sharp and lack the shine this game has in eye candy...but the flying physics feel great.
Don't get me wrong, this is one helluva pretty game. Nothing puts a smile on my face more than a good ole Napalm run on the local mosque or enemy troop concentrations :) But its got a long ways to go to have that kind of *WOW* impact several of the Aces High type players will really connect with.
The F-86 add on is simply gorgeous.
If it has multiplayer coming soon, and bug fixes...yay. Otherwise, if the fans improve this game much like the Falcon 4 crowd has tweaked their game...well, wow!
If I had to give a cummulative score to the game, I'd give it a 5 out of 10 (10 highest). It does a lot right but for this genre of player (simulation)...there's a lot of work to be done. Go try stalling an airplane and watch it hang there.
-
If you can't spin them then you aren't trying hard enough. :)
They do seem to be awful stable (laterally) at high angles of attack though.
But looking at the .ini files, all the dynamics are there to get more realistic behavior. It's just a matter of getting somebody like Wells to tune all the parameters.
-
Really? I mean I've tried it all....mostly in the A-4
Have you done the Communications Building strike (and where is it?)...LOL....I keep getting assigned that in pouring rain. Nothing like a lil IFR rocket raid
-
I want a B43 special store for that ****ing commo building. I'm always long or short with my bombs on that little bastard.
I don't fly the Navy planes much, but the Hun and the Starfighter will do all kinds of groovy gyrations if you zoom vertically and cut the throttle, especially if you get way up in the thin air.
I think part of the difficulty with getting a spin or a snap roll from level flight is that the planes just run out of elevator authority at low speeds. I guess if I get bored this weekend I'll have to play around with the ini and see what happens.
-
THE SECOND PATCH IS OUT!!!!! YAY!!!!
On the FM's. I think these Jets have an extrordinary Thrust / Weight ratio so do not stall nearly as easy as the rides here. That being said- I've heard from the modders that the fidelity that is missing in the FM's can easily be added.
THE KOREAN MOD IS OUT!!!!! YAY!!!!!!!!!
-
Gimme a screen shot of where that building is!!
I've loved hitting that airfield nearby....F-4 with 8 750 pound bombs and a centerline 2k...and 2 napalm canisters do a mighty fine job (if you like emulating the ole Iron Eagle scene hehe...."Chappy!")
Its just a matter of time before someone adds on an F-15 or F-16 to that game. The B-52 is a bit rough, but cool (takes a LONG TIME to turn the mutha!)

Its lite FM is kinda funkey, and the planes and the scenery are pretty good. Just like Il-2 in my book. Its fun to fly though, I like the A-4. Though if you ever complained about hispanos being point and click the 20mm in this game is worse you hit it, its. dead. I have yet to see a wounded plane.
The mission editor as is is also where the fun is at it track your kills every mission I got 30 some MiGs painted up on the side of my A-4. I havent tried the campiagn yet, so I dont know how it is. And it is very fun going in on mosques with napalm and 2000lb bombs.
-
Opps funkedup...saw the readme.txt file was up ..assumed it was ready for dowload.
-
LOL..Ya I make it a point to Napalm the mosques too...hehe. One thing about this sim- it doesn't take 30min to load like FB's and I got no studders either...
-
I picked this up a couple weeks ago. No stalls or spins unless you have difficulty set to hard. Even normal is Relaxed Realism.
I have no real complaints for the $14.99 I spent on this game.
Its abit rough on the newb offering ZERO training missions, but perseverence is starting to pay off... (got 2 kills so far!!)
Can't wait to start a merc campaign

We should do some co-op some time. I have no idea how to set it up though. Would be cool to fly those missions with a bunch of human wingies.
-
I'm in a squad thats been Inactive due to the MP bugs. When we get going I'll post here and try to get some of you guys flying:)
-
Here is what the comm building looks like. Its not always in the same place. I have all my settings set to hard, so I dont get a neat little red box on my screen that tells me where the target it. So I always have to search a bit.
Also you can stall and spin. Landing can be tough, and you do have nav lights. You just need to set your flight settings to hard. You will have alot more fun that way.
-
I have it set to hard too
I get distracted easy...lol....I was coming in from the East and this neat lil AAA site always pops fire at me...so I wax that, then the nearby Mosque...and never quite find the Comm Building
The Cities are quite nice
-
We need to make a STRIKE COMMANDER ONLINE kinda game ;)
-
Was that the one by Origin where you are a freelance group with F-16s ?
-
yeah, where you were a mercenary in an merc f16 squadron going all over the map. Really nice game too.
Origin also made a rather good WW2 sim, PACIFIC STRIKE, where you flew the 'cats, corsair and the SBD/TBM's out of a carrier in ground support, fleet attack, CAP missions, etc. Was a really awesome game for its time.
-
Yea, those weren't bad games...kind of on rails for a good part of it. I recall it being one of the last games I bought on 3.5" floppies. I think after buying the Voice/Sound Pack or something like that, it had 12 or more floppies? I dunno...the record is still the MS Office I had...30+

I still dont know where to buy this game? I dont realy like buying used games off Ebay.

I didn't find it at EBoutique.Com but it was at my local EB for $19 a few weeks ago

I hear you can put the gear out, then roll inverted and bounce down the runway on your canopy in Strike Fighters. From what I hear, it's a real dog.

 Yea it has a few quirks like that. I've made some impressive inverted landings too

BoxBoy try the EB at SomerSet Mall or CompUSA (Both) in Madison Hts.

Don't forget to get Service Pack 1

Is it really $20 USD??
EBgames here in canada eh has it for $14.99 (bout 12 USD mebbe less), tho some stores have it for $64 lol
About that comm building...
If ya can't spot it from 10,000 ft...
In reality did the attackers have to make a sight seeing low alt pass to find the target first?
I don't have everything set to hard, but I have the gfx maxed and find it very difficult to find anything on the ground without my cute little red box... try spotting vehicles... geeeeez!
Not tried MP yet Funked but I'd be willing to give it a go, hopefully patch 2 be out real soon. I kinda get the impression we will see it before the end of June.

Been out of town, so I'm a little late on this thread.
Actually these planes should be stalling a lot EASIER than the planes in AH. Yes they have a higher thrust to weight ratio, but also have incredibly higher wingloadings and very very thin wings that are optimized for supersonic speed. The F-4 Phantom is a brick that flies ;)
Emptygun, was the A4 skin a user made one, or one of the production ones? Because the markings around the cockpit are wrong.
Hmmm... massively multiplayer 60's & 70's jet combat sim. So you guys are interested in that? ;) Maybe I can whip something up!! :p

I wondered why the F-105 in X-plane Stalled out every time I nuddged the stick. I thought an F-4 or F-105 shouldn't stall out very much because of T/W ratio. Didn't think about the very high wingloading effect. It would be nice to hear HiTech or Pyro or anybody with an "educated" opinion on the subject.

Oh and a comment of the guns of the era.
Yes they were very lethal, pretty much if you hit something, its torn to pieces. The cannon in the Thunderchief and the F-4E (or gunpods in the C/D) have a rate of fire of 6,000 rpm, and the Soviet NR-23, Gsh-23, and NR-30 are nasty nasty rounds.
Combine this with the fact that in fighters of the era, that there is little to no "empty space", if you hit, its something important. Also design choices play a role. For some reason in the early and mid "jet era" they stopped using self sealing fuel tanks (weight I guess), and the cockpit visibility is extremely poor in most aircraft allowing for alot of "blind bounces".
I have watched a gun camera clip during Vietnam of a Thud killing a MiG-17F with its gun. A single 0.75 burst, hitting right on the spine of the aircraft where the trailing edge of the wings meet the fuselage, and it literally looked like a buzz saw hit the plane. I couldn't count the number of hit flashes, but the burst seperated both wings, the rear fuselage, and the horizontal/vertical stabilizers as one piece, with countless other hits spread over the aircraft. Very very scary.

heh, I've really only been flying the F100D, I guess I have 20-30 kills so far with it, and all but 4-5 with guns.
Only had one aircraft survive a gun hit, though he was smoking badly. Often 1 hit kills the badguy... I have weapons set to hard. Not so sure this is realistic.
The F100 is only using 4 20's, not sure of the ROF...

Oh and about never seeing a injured plane in StrikeFighters. I'm flying the Korean Mod and w/ those 50cal's in the Sabre you have to make multiple passes to kill a Beagle-for example. I hit one last night with about 100rounds and it flew off (smoking).

The four M39s in the F-100D give 6000 rounds per minute combined, without the spinup time penalty of the rotary gun. I think they use the same round, so muzzle velocity and ballistics are about the same.
I've definitely seen Beagles survive multiple gun passes. Frescos usually die pretty easily though.

Verm,
How's your project going?
-
Funked, I think your right. I believe they use the same round. I'll look when I get home.
One bad point is that historically, the Colt M39 was considered highly unreliable and prone to jamming. At least in the Crusader. Not sure about the Hun. While the gatling cannon was about foolproof and highly effective.
Puke, its coming along. I had to delay work on it for several months while I studied for my PE License (ie Professional Engineers License... WOOOhhooooo I passed :) :) :) ) But the last couple of weeks I'm back on track. If your coming to the CON remind me to show you what I've got.

Congrats on the PE, I'm going to take the exam soon myself.
M39 had some early problems in the F-86 but by the 60's it was a reliable weapon.
The gun in the Crusader was the Mk 12, based on the trusty Hispano. It fired a 20x110 round.
