Vorticon... go to http://www.diplom.org for the directions on how to register and play via the judge.

If you've never played before, these are the rules (http://www.avalonhill.com/rules/diplomacy.pdf) .

sandman, this game is too hard. I'd much rather prefer a conventional wargame.

Just to make it more interesting, you should make them play it in binary.

I got a feeling you'd dig it Hortlund.

I hear ya on the registering... took me forever to figure it out, and going back to retrace my steps in order to explain it to you isn't working out - I have no idea how I managed to do it.

Ok, I'm waiting to join but there isn't an aceshigh game under USIN.

Also, why a gunboat variant? Doesn't that mean no press allowed? How are we going to negotiate then?

Hortlund,

Go here http://www.diplom.org/DipPouch/Email/registration.html and register, making sure to check the radio button for judge USIN.

Then you'll receive a confirmation email with a code in it. Proceed to the link in the email and enter this confirmation code. I think that's all you need to do....but then again, the "aceshigh" game is not listed under USIN, so I'm not sure how we're actually going to have to get into the game itself.

In my current game "DippyIII" with the AGW guys, I had to send an email with some commands in it to actually join the game. Not sure if that is how Sandman has it setup.
Title: *** The Aces High Diplomacy Game ***
Post by: Sandman on June 03, 2003, 10:26:58 AM
Sorry guys, the game is not listed because I wanted to keep it private.

Send an email to usin@thekleimans.com

Type this in the body:

signon ?aceshigh password standard gunboat
set preference AEFGIRT
signoff

The preference above is just an example, set your own and use your own password.

If you have questions, please do not hesitate to contact me directly at sandman935@softhome.net

Press is allowed with gunboat. What gunboat does is mask your true identity to the rest of the players and forces you to use the judge for all communication.

Ok guys, here's the key instructions on how to join the game, once you've registered.

Okay, you now need to tell the Judge which countries you would prefer to play.

Setting Country Preferences

If the GM told you the name of the Judge, but not its e-mail address, you can find it at the registration form link: http://www.diplom.org/DipPouch/Email/registration.html

Let's imagine the game's codename is blimp. Let's also decide on a password for ourselves: croak. This is what we might send:

signon ?blimp croak
set preference AIFGERT
signoff

Every time you send an e-mail to the judge, you need to start with the 'signon' command, and finish with the 'signoff' command.
The question mark means you haven't been given a country yet, and the preference letters refer to the countries we want to play, so we have just asked the Judge to give us A (Austria), or if that's given to someone else, I (Italy) etc. Chances are mighty slim that we'll be assigned Russia or Turkey.

You don't need to set preferences; if you don't, you will be given whichever country nobody else wants.

Using these instructions, I got into the game. Whew!

Basically, there are two systems for setting up a game:

1. USDPJudge
2. Ken Lowe

Sandman used the Ken Lowe system, so you want to read the instructions that reference his method.

Furthermore, the preference setting in the second line is for setting the priority of which country you want to play.

For example, if my first choice would be to play France, my second choice Russia, third Austria, fourth Italy, fifth England and sixth Turkey, I would have as my second line...

set preference FRAIET

I'm not really familiar with the USDPJudge so I went with what I was used to... Ken Lowe.

Rgr banana - I'm in.

Just wanted to make sure that my country preferences are in the running when it makes the draw.

I *think* what the above says is that my preferences are noted, but no country/player list has been established. I.o.w., the Judge hasn't assigned the countries yet.

Sand, can you have a look at that (2-3 posts up) and see if I'm interpreting it right?

If we go with gunboat...we will not know which player plays what country? Is that so?

Sandman, you are already broadcasting to us via email. I'd like to respond back, but don't know the URL to log into in order to respond.

You asked about gunboat....I'd rather not play gunboat, because I don't think it's neccessary. No matter how much you like or dislike one or more of the other players in a game, at some point they will probably all be an enemy and an ally.

"Your enemy today can be your best friend tomorrow", and vice-versa, seems to be an apt attitude to take.

My intention for using gunboat was that it would force comms via the judge. If you guys can agree to communicate via the judge and not use more direct methods, we can go with standard. I just want to be able to read the press.

For responses using the judge use the standard press commands (example):

signon ?aceshigh blah blah
press to all
Blah blah blah blah blah
endpress
signoff

I have no idea how to send press via the judge, but I'll guess I'll be doing some reading so that I know how!

At any rate, I'm all for everyone using the judge, and not doing any negotiatiing in secret. Afterall, the only enjoyment you're going to get as Master is reading all the negotiations. That's gotta be hilarious! :)

HORTLUND GETS THE BOOT

The shortest game of Diplomacy in human history was played today over the internet. Seven players from the infamous "Aces high" bulletin board agreed to play a game earlier this week, and the game started this afternoon. Apparently one very disliked character known as "Hortlund" was included in the game. Upon realizing their misstake, the rest of the players ganged up on Hortlund in a display of unity never before seen in the history of Diplomacy. "It was beautiful", one of the players known as "Sandman" commented, "I have never seen anything like that, it was like...like all of Europe just came crashing down on him, and his tiny nation just imploded".

Diplomacy is otherwise known as a game of backstabbing and intrigue. This time however, the players just rid themselves of their obnoxious foe and then decided to end the game in a draw.
"It was the best thing to do really" said one participant known as "Airhead". "After we got rid of that weird Swedish dude, we all felt so happy and relieved that we decided to stop fighting and try to become friends instead." He stated to the gathered reporters. "Yes, we realized that once our real enemy was gone, we should all just try to get along and, you know, be friends" Another player, known as "banana" added.
"If only Chimpy and his..."conservatives" could do the same thing in Iraq, you know, just say enough is enough, lets be friends we would all be in a happy place. But dubya is in the pocket of the "oil" business " The press conference  was abruptly interrupted as someone named "weazel"  started shouting. Before long he was whisked away by a suddenly appearing black helicopter, and everyone realized they didnt miss him or his ramblings at all.

Hortlund declined to comment on the story.

Well... if the Ken Lowe method is too difficult, I could just toss out the whole thing and start over. I had some difficulty registering with the DPJudge the other day and just didn't consider using it. Ken Lowe is familiar to me.

I just failed in my 4th attempt at sending out a broadcast to everyone, so I'm thinking that with a whole crew of newbies, maybe a GUI system is the way to go for now. That would mean moving the game to the DPJudge, but I think it would be worth it. Using the browser based interface of the DPJudge is very easy.

Horlund, we may have to send another email to register on the DPJudge, but trust, me it'll be worth it. The interface for everything on the DPJudge is graphical instead of text commands. We even get a nice pop-up map that shows the location of everyone's units. It'll be worth it to move over to the DPJudge.

Dowding, I believe there is still room for you. Go ahead and register on the Ken Lowe system now, so that Sandman will reserve that spot for you like he's doing for the rest of us who've already registered.

So it tells me what country I am but we dont want to share that with others....right?

Ok guys, I think we're all set. I just got an email saying that the game is full and has started.

So that means we should all just keep quiet, and not say or do anything more until Sandman has the game all setup on the DPJudge.

He is moving the game from the Ken Lowe system over to the DPJudge, which will be much easier to use. It has a nice website where we'll enter in our moves, and view the map, etc....

Just sit tight and wait to hear from Sandman.

Post by: Sandman on June 03, 2003, 03:58:59 PM
Okay.... we have seven. As banana stated... just sit tight and I'll create another game via DPJudge. I will send you email directly when it's ready.

Pay no attention to the email you've received stating country assignments. All of this will change when we start (again).

Whew....did it. I'm Power 3.

Gawd this stuff is confusing. It is JUST within' my reach... my ability to figure it out. It's right on the edge. Somehow I managed to fake it once again... but if there were just, like, one more step to any of this and I'd prolly have to bow out. :)

So... Do we send in our country prefs the same way as we did last time?

I feel your pain. Had a pretty good understanding of the Ken Lowe judge. This DPJudge is another animal entirely.

banana has more experience with this judge than I. Correct me please if I'm wrong, but as near as I can tell, you can't set a preference list for countries on this judge. The only other option is "power_choice" and then it's a first come, first served kinda thang.

How much Diplomacy experience do you guys have?

I have 1/2 a game (the Judge computer died on us, then came back online several days later... I missed the announcement and subsequently missed the deadline for submitting the next turn. Got the boot.)

This was a few years ago. I vaguely recall submitting the orders and bracing for the bitter fallout.... accompanied by the exhasperated screeches from closet Napoleons who "thought we had a deal!"...  but not much else. I had Sandman as an alliance so that helped immensly. There's no such hand-holding this time around... Btw, you went on to win that one didn't you Sand?

This is going to be a heckuhvalotta *fun* guys!

hehe last time I played Diplomacy it was in a face-to-face game with a couple of "friends" in high school. I was Germany and France backstabbed me horribly...it wasnt pretty.

I was ready to ax murder everyone in the room.

I walked out furious, vowing never to play Diplomacy ever again. I never spoke to the person who backstabbed me again (he was just a friend of a friend anyway, and he was an ugly fat ****)

Soo...good thing this is via the internet. :)

I'm in as power #6!

See, wasn't that much easier than Ken Lowe? :)

Here's a great spot for reading up on strategy. http://www.diplomacy-archive.com/resources/strategy.htm

I think all country assignments are random, so we'll just have to see what the DPJudge doles out to us.

I gotta tell you about my experience in my first game of Diplomacy, currently raging on over at AGW....

I'm playing Russia, and so I wanted to ally with an experienced player for my first game, to help me learn the intricacies of the rules, and to hopefully stay alive.

I entered into what I thought was a permanent alliance with Turkey. We worked together, forming what is known in the Diplomacy world as "The Juggernaught": a joint Russian/Turkish alliance. If the other players find out that the Juggernaught exists, they must pretty much stop everything and work together to stop it. The Juggernaught is a very powerful alliance.

So, everything was rolling along just fine, my Turkish ally, Sultan No.6 was my best buddy, giving me encouragement and pointers, helping me make decisions. That is, until he had me where he wanted me. I had my forces split between my northern front and my southern front. I was doing well, having helped eliminate Austria, and threatening to take over the whole Scandinavia region from England.

That's when my "ally", Turkey, stabbed me. Basically, we always agreed what our moves would be for each turn. And this particular turn was no different. Except that he didn't do what he said he was going to do. Instead, he had secretly contacted Italy, whom the Juggernaught had on the ropes, and arranged a stab of me. Needless to say, I was totally unprepared, and he stabbed me good. In one year(two turns), I went from 7 units down to 3.

Fortunately, instead of standing and fighting like he expected, I retreated the next turn and saved my remaining three armies from destruction. That one turn saved my game. I'm happy to say that I have survived that stab, and the Sultan's plans for my quick demise have not borne fruit. Instead, I was able to ally with the Italian, and help in his stab of Turkey. :)

The best part was when my former ally came back, groveling on his knees, begging forgiveness for his stab. I demanded that he give me back two of my lost SC's(supply centers) before I'd help him survive the Italian onslaught.

This has finally been accomplished, and that's where the game stands now. Although I was royally pissed that he stabbed me, it taught me an invaluable lesson about the game. You need to think in the short term about what is good for your country. Today's ally might need to be tomorrow's enemy, and then someday that same country may need to be your ally again.

I love this game, it is so much fun! :D
