Corked bat Sammy? Just put an asterix next to all of his homers.

Nice speculation, how about the fact that his HR derby bat got mixed up with his other bats.
CHICAGO -- Chicago Cubs star Sammy Sosa was ejected in the first inning of Tuesday night's game against Tampa Bay right when umpires found cork in his shattered bat.
ESPN's Harold Reynolds reports -- after talking to a a representative in the Cubs public relations department -- that Sosa will admit in his postgame presser that the bat he used tonight was corked.
Sosa will say the illegal bat was used for batting practice, but somehow got mixed in with his game bats. He will add that he has never used a corked bat in a major league game before tonight.

Hehe....what else can he say??
I used a cork bat all the time??
Come on Pfunk!
BTW, how does he tell his practice bat from the others? I mean he could identify it when he pulled it for BP, right?
He's not the first to cheat, nor will he be the last.

LOL! Did you actually use the term "fact"?

You're right Mini.... Whether this is a one time thing or not, this puts a big fat asterix on his entire career, basically... because nobody will ever know for sure. Yegads, he blew it.

People still watch baseball?
Why?
LOL
I look at Pro Athletes like Doctors...if they screw up, fumble, strike out, etc....they should be sued for malpractice :p

What ball? What does cork do? Allow one to hit further/harder? Or was his bat the rare endagered species onliusforwinebottlius corkius

As a White Sox fan for years, all I can say is:
Bwaaaa! Haaaaaaaa! Haaaaaaa!
heheeheheh! :D :D

I think it allows the shell of the bat to spring back against the ball, causing it to travel further.

"Lol what country are u from? Baseball isnt what it once was but it's still only 2nd to football in ratings and is 1st in overall viewers/attendance and 2nd in attendence per game... Basketball and hockey cant even compare..."
Well, college basketball can...

And Clinton never inhaled.

i rember years ago i was watching the tonite show with johnny carson. and he had a retired umpire on the show. the guy had a bandsaw and proceeded to cut 2 bats from the major leage. they were corked. he said all the big hitters used them. the only way you can get caught is to break a bat. they dont x-ray those things. there is alot of cheating in baseball. bacon in the pitchers pocket, vasaline on his wrists. with all the money in that game they will do almost anything for a edge.

i thought they used wooden bats.. they use aluminum bats like little league??
and as stated, so what? it ain't like it's gonna cost sammy anything... still has how many homes, cars???
pro sports is Ryedickulous - cept for football :)
-
Is there a good reason why someone would use a corked bat for batting practice? Makes no sense to me. He cheated and got caught, pure and simple.

First Mcguire with Androstein (Performance boosting synthetic Steroid) and now Sammy with Cork. Sorry folks, their home records are tainted. Babe still holds the record IMO.
-
MLB sucks. buncha whining little wussies. The only good that could come out of this season is if the Yankees don't make the playoffs. I might actually pay attention if they fall out of the race.
It's very simple. All they have to do is examine all of Sosa's bats (which they confiscated after the incident.) If his other bats are corked, then hang him. If they aren't, then his story is likely.
Curval, people come early to games to watch batting practice. For one reason. To see the sluggers cream the hell out of the ball.

your books are about as important as my hate for the MLB right now. i.e. not at all. :p
;)
edit: even better. ;) you decided to exclude ol' Roger Maris because he took more games to do it. :p
besides, neither McGwire or Sosa has the record. Bonds has 73. And he hit 61, 62 AND 63 in game 144, so you can't even use the 154 game complaint that Maris dealt with. Bonds had 68 through 154 games.
-
Oops, forgot about Bonds, we'll one day find out what performance enhancing drugs he was on too. Lets face it, you can't complete on ANY level of professional sports unless you're doing some kind of performance enhancers.

Sure...I used to show up to Jays games really early too, but only because at Exhibition Stadium there was a general admission section. Show up early and you get the good seats.
I do understand that some people show up to see the sluggers...but BP isn't really supposed to be for the fans. It is to get some practice..or to get ones "eye in". If it has now been turned into a marketing ploy I must  at MLB once again.

LoL!!
Yea thats right! Babe was a stand-up guy who never ever tried to get an edge or ever did anything dishonest.... buahahahahaha!
I think he still holds the record for most games missed due to syphillus.

Cork has never been a threat to baseball in the United States. It's just redikulus!
Don't all MLB baseballs have cork centers? If so, it make's you wonder why it's okay for the ball to have cork, but not the bat.
And what's all this nonsense about pine tar anyway?
:D

Cork doesn't make the bat more resilient, it makes it a little lighter so the player can increase his bat speed.

Actualy, Tahg, I think it's a combination of both. Modern metal bats started out as hollow, but ended up with dents and caving. They had to make them thicker walled to prevent caving but this made them too heavy for good bat speed. Then, the engineers started putting a type of plastic framework inside to prevent the caving, and give the sidewalls more resilience even though thinner, while becoming incredibly light. They got so good at it that high school and college rules were changed to say that the length weight differential could not be more than -5, i.e.32 inch bat, is now a minimum of 27 ounces. But, I have seen bats with as much as -12 differential.
The difference with light bats is hand speed which tranlsates to greater bat speed. That is just the major difference in putting the bat on the ball, especially as kids grow older and face faster pitching but don't have the strength to get the bat around quickly. Yes, bat speed help you hit the ball hard and far. But, the resilience offered by lightwieght metal bats is what makes the metal bats too hot. The thinner the sidewall, the lighter the bat, and the more resilient the inner framework must be. Thus, the compression decompression cycle of the bat hitting the ball, once it has been brought around quickly to the poitn of contact due to it's lightness, is what puts the ball over the fence. For a while, in the late 80's, metal bats would go flat. All the resilience would be beaten out of the inner framework. But, that has been resolved, although I am not sure how. That's why new bats cost so dang much!
Hmmmm, do you think I spent too many years coaching little grunts baseball............;)

Just reminds me of the Tootise Roll commercials...just reworded...."How many hits does it take to get to the cork center of a MLB baseball bat" :p

Whether it was intentional or not, he lost any chance of getting into the Baseball Hall of Fame with this incident.
At least, I hope he did.
