Now Imsneaky, Sparrow, et. al. WW2OL players, the AH download is smaller than the average porn file and runs on older systems, and anyone who knows how to do multitasking can download AH while they pimp WW2OL at the same time. Really, educate yourselves by checking out the feee multiplayer. Host a game for WW2OL guys only, try it out and then you'll have a more informed basis for your opinions. You have absolutely nothing to lose so why haven't you done this yet?
Airhead, I have stated that I am going to try AH as soon as possible. Why wouldn't I?
If by the end of July Ihave not met up with you in game give me a shout.
I created a yahoo email for my WWIIOL buddies to get ahold of me. Email me there anytime you wish.
imsneakywwiiol@yahoo.com
Email me there (invitation open to anyone) and title it Aces High. When I get the game downloaded I'll get back with you and we can meet up in game.
If you haven't heard from me by the end of July you can send me a flame email there. :p

LOL Curval
My email to you got returned by your email service for using profanity. :p
I sat there confused a bit thenhit the back button till I got to the email before I hit send and started scanning for where I may have cursed.
I saw multiple times where I had use AH and thought it took it as prettythangHOLE.
Then I got to a point where I had said "t1t for tat" only with the I and realised that this was the problem.
hehe t1t for tat is profanity! lol

Let me look at the file date here. Aces High has been on this PC since Sep 29th 2002. Probably on the old 1ghz longer than that. :p I play it for a bit offline every now and then.
Btw anyone have any links to good Aces High videos? I always love checking out the various flight sim videos. I'll admit that one of my all time favorites is Thunderstruck by Phenix off of WB. Oh how I can't wait to give those evil jerry panzers a nice bath in napalm. :D
-
My brother had a good one under contruction from the Midway scenario ran a few months agoa while back to the sound of the Matrix theme by Massive Attack. I believe it started with a peaceful fly past of the stunning midway island in keeping with the peaceful beginning of that particular piece of music. It then cuts to a dogfight. I'm not sure if he finished it.
-
Offline?? Well, you're better than me then cause offline those Bots kick my ass.
Bottom line tho it's a small FREE (bout twenty dollars cheaper than WW2OL's "free" trial) download (bout 32 Mgs. or so) and no credit card information is required and your free trial doesn't even kick in until you visit MA, Training or the CT arena. You can play for free in the 8 person multiplayer arenas and since it's always more fun to fly with guys you know you and some of your WW2OL squadies could play in a private game against each other.
It seems to me there's alot of misinformation about both games and one way to find out about a game is to play it for a little bit. If some of the WW2OL guys would check out AH and some of the AH guys would check out WW2OL then maybe we could put aside our bias and discuss the relative merits of the different sims in an objective manner, not to mention you might see a feature in one sim you like and maybe suggest it be implemented in your own sim.
As long as it turns into a pissing contest tho the only thing that gets accomplished is Skuzzy gets to pratice his thread locking skills and I get called a fanboi. FWIW I'm not currently subscribed to AH and won't be until our house sells and we get moved but I couild still meet you guys in free multiplayer tho.

Not this again? :( Again, WWIIOL's free trial is free, it does not cost 19.99. Ah has a 365 day a year free 2 week trial. WWIIOL has occasional 1 week FREE trial. They charge for the game though if you decide to subscribe and give you another month free for doing so after purchasing the game for $19.99. It's the same deal the guys who buy the boxed retail game get without having to go out and buy it. It has to do with the fact that there are still copies of the game out there that cost $19.99. You can find them on EBGames.com for one. They can't give the download guys a better deal than the boxed retail guys, though I'm sure they'd like to. They would probably get sued by the retailers holding those boxed versions. That simple. When the boxed games are gone, the deal may change.

Now that is the best thing I have seen posted here. You are 100% right. It's funny that the guys screaming for us to go away don't realize that all of the posts containg comparisons and debate on the games has (for some) been learning experiences. I for one have learned things about AH that I didn't know and like what I have learned.
I mean understand that I am not going to leave WWIIOL but I amy subscribe to AH. Who knows.
Also you are right about the exchange of ideas being a good thing. I play Blackhawk Down and own and have played the entire DF series. My favorite game types were Search and Destroy and TKOTH. Attack and Defend was fun in Land Warrior as was Flagball and CTF. one of the things that always attracted me to the Delta Force series was the variety of game types that other games didn't have.
CS had a few that the DF series didn't like Hostage rescue but for some reason all the games seemed to play the same to me because of the small predictable maps.
Anyway I made the suggestion to CRS that instead of playing CTF which is what the infantry basically do in WWIIOL, I suggested a shift to more of a TKOTH style of play. In TKOTH you have to hold ground for a period of time, we call it the zone in the DF series.
Anyway I did get a response that they liked the idea nad want to shift the objective to something like that. SO I can see the idea of capping flags going away and it will be infantry that have to hold the area around armor spawns to be able to capture it and spawn your own armor there.
The armor would shut down if enemy infantry can stay within that area for a short period and stay there. If they get killed and the "zone" is clear the armor spawn activates again. If they however clear the defenders out and hold it for a set period of time it becomes capped and active for them.
The idea is that it be more than 30 seconds. More like 10 minutes or something like that.
The point here is you are 100% right. An exchange of ideas with less flaming is great for everyone and is what Killer alluded to when he said the SIM community used to be less fractured and more of a tight single community way back when.
He wasn't sniping at Ah, he was sniping fanboys in all sims (WWIIOL too)that keep the Sim community from being tight like it used to be.
Maybe if we can do away with the flaming all of us in AH and WWIIOL can lead the way in umiting the Sim Community. in the process we could bring others like IL2 FHB in.
We could start off with one big AH/WWIIOL convention. At that convention we could have some computers set up lan style to play some IL2 against each other. Mixing and matching pilots and sometimes just a friendly AH vs WWIIOL match. They could also shocase the best fan movies on a big screen.
Then we could all get drunk together.
Eventually it could turn into a WWII Sim convention.
AH, WWIIOL, WB, IL2, MSCFS, MOH, etc....
Could be an awsome thing. Will never happen unless we can get past the flaming.
-
lol if that happened i think we'd have to hire security agency and rent metal detectors considering the high percentage of players that are gun owners.
even then it'd probably end in a giant drunken brawl :D
-
It's pretty simple... if you can't trust the developers then you should save yourself a lot of work and frustration and not get involved with the sim.
So long as the drunken aussie blowhard is involved with WWIIOL it is not worth trying... the fact that the rest of the staff tolerates him is proof that the sim is not worth trying.
saying... "sure, maybe we used to be dishonest and have a bogus sim but now we are much different" doesn't get it... what has changed ?

We had a HUGE problem here with spam and as a result our IT administrator had to put in place rules to remove anything that might relate to profanity or porn.
I note here that you need to replace the "i" with a "1"..same deal essentially.

ok,exactly what do so many of you guys have against docdoom?
wtf did he do to you that you have to insult him unprovoked?
-
chaunsey, unless we're willing to ignore "insults" from each other this thread will quickly degenerate into a flame fest and will get locked the moment Skuzzy determines we have no more sociatial value. Acknowledging what Lazs said was provocative, please refrain from the spiral of flames and instead let's discuss the relative merits and more positive aspects of our respective games.
Just sayin'... only cause my name is on this thread.
-
chausey... everything I said about doomie is the truth... that is enough reason to say it. if you are over the age of 13 or even if you don't believe a 190 will outurn a spit 5 at 200 mph... you will eventually see that what I say is the truth.
I have probly never seen anyone with less cause to be so full of himself.. the fact that he is a force in WWIIOL is one of the main reasons that anyone who knew doomie from several other sims and BB's would run from WWIIOL like some kind of LW plague. His "data" has been proven to be .... less than "reliable" in the past. A mixture of romance and wishful thinking. His skills were allways about a tenth of what he claimed. If he is doing well now then you can bet he has some "unusual" characteristics born of being on the staff.
If the players like him over there then... either they haven't been around him long enough or... the community is not worth getting to know.

-
well first off i asked cause i really did not know.
wwIIol is my first entrance into this community(and yes all our games WBIII,aces high, and wwIIol are all basically the same community of folks and types of folks).
sorry you feel that way about him,i dont know anything about what has happened in the past, but i have not seen anything from him that fits your talk about him.
oh and just so you know he is NOT the one working on the air game.
he has nothing to do with it,he makes the terrain and buildings.
so if that was why you were staying away then rest assured he's not the one making the flight sim.
-
anything he touches will be wrong...

Funny from the stories I've heard I would be more worried about an AH dev as far as someone exploiting a special front end on a production server goes. Not to mention there would be a justifiable riot if any players thought the Rats were using a special FE to effect gameplay. Then again Mo would probably have whoever it was out the door before it came to that.
As far as wwiionline goes Doc has done a fair to good job creating new towns that stimulate good combat experiences. If he really was a drunk I doubt he would have stayed around after all these cuts, if that is not an indication that he pulls his own weight I'm not sure what is. Once again I must stress that to my knowledge he has nothing to do with the FM. Depending on the model quite a bit of data actually comes from military archival or factory data dug up by players such as Ireg, Pachy, and GdG for example. Which they then have to prove beyond a shadow of a doubt the authenticity.
Were you a victim of Doc running around drunk and bailing people out of their planes at a con or something? :D
-
Gee, I thought Doc Doom was a comic book villan, not a game developer. Now concerning Lazs, I've met him and like and respect him. He's outspoken in his opinions, but he's not one to blow smoke up your bellybutton and fake it, so I believe his opinions are his sincere opinions.Doesn't mean he's always right, doesn't mean he's always politically correct- but if you met the guy you'd respect his opinions as being those formed by his personal experiences. A rare commodity nowadays.
-
ok,exactly what do so many of you guys have against docdoom?
wtf did he do to you that you have to insult him unprovoked?
Well lets see.I was one of the priveleged few to many that got to pay to beta test a boxed pieca crap. Most of the stuff on the box wasnt even in the game as it said it was.I tried it.Found it lacking, turned down the free try us again we wont bone you in the bellybutton THIS time trial and counted myself lucky to be rid of it.AH has blown me away by continuously asking what needs done.I remember HT himself coming into the game to do Q and A on bugs.To me thats service. To me,ww2OL started out a lie and will NEVER get another chance from this guy.Screw me once shame on you, twice?Fuhgiddahbout it.
-
I love WWIIOL, Doc is a good guy, he's a bit outspoken at times, but a good guy in my experience. He does great terrain work too ]; )
ireg, is one of our main sources for German and other vehicle data. He's not a CRS employee, but he is an exhaustive researcher with access to (I'm pretty sure) all of the German armed forces archives, which is real handly ]= )
Really, why go off and flame Drdrea? If you don't like the game, bummer for you, but don't drag this thread down.
Hmm, I may try aces high as soon as my new computer is working (power supply died }= ( )
!S
-
In the past... doomie had access to really really secret german archives for flight models.. in fact... he was the only man in the world with access. if you could do a search on AGW when he was at his pontificating best you would instantly see what I mean by blowhard and liar. I doubt that he has changed just as I doubt that WWIIOL has turned over an new leaf.
Any data that doomie comes up with is suspect. If there are other developers and or players that are keeping him honest then that is good but... he still taints anything he is involved with. seriously.... you haven't noticed an ego problem there? no? give it time.

dr drea, its not the rats fault the game was uncomplete.
strategy first(quality second) forced them to release a year or 2 early.
otherwise everythnig and more would be in the game by release.
just go take a look at toher strategy first games, they force release every game they produce.
go try hearts of iron, play the original boxed version and tell me how complete it is.
or gi combat or a number of others i heard of that i cant recall at this moment.
give it time.
2 years isnt enough?
im not calling you a liar, but so far i have no experience of him lying or any kind of ego problems.
I doubt that WWIIOL has turned over an new leaf.
theyve added well over 200 new towns since release, about 30 new vehicles or so,new capture systems, attrition,FAR better graphics.FAAAAAAR better performance.
they ported the graphics engine over to DX 8.1 wich is huge in itself, and they are porting over to opengl in about 2 weeks wich will allow much faster graphics updates and many cool new features along with better performance.
the game is overall improved 1000 times over,it still has plenty of issues but to say it has not changed ALOT is just plain ignorant.
-
Umm... that "strategy first forced them into it" crap lost its punch about a year ago. Of course, it is proving to be the most convenient excuse for most.
I know WW2OL has improved. It has to have improved because there's no way it could have been worse. As for the 2 extra years that were needed to develop it... look at the box and tell me if the game even today has all of what was advertised back then.
Developers and publishers alike were making grandiose claims for a product that did not yet exist. They continue to do so... only now to a much more captive audience that has always proven their desire to believe whatever promise is currently being made.
I won't speak to the quality of the game today. I haven't played it for about 3 months. I will say that CRS and Strategy First are two companies that have alot to learn about 1) making promises and 2) delivering on them.

I dont concider voicing my opionion about a game I paid to beta a flame as you put it,I concider it my right. To put down money for something that was a blatent lie should have seen the rats sued for all kinds of reasons.Hey if the game is incomplete, say so on the box.Dont convince thousands that its the next best thing to sliced bread and then leave them stuck wondering what in the hell they paid 19.99 for. They should have at the least offered to refund the box price to those that wanted it.

Not saying I doubt it, but..
LOL!
Come on guys :P
-
They did do something for the players. They didn't charge a monthly fee until november if I remember correctly. Considering June was a free month that means quite a few people got four months free. Which comes out about the same as the box price was. Not to mention it is partially the consumer's responsibility to educate himself on what he's paying for. Lord knows there were more than enough bad reviews at the beginning and people screaming about the game.
Strategy First has, at least around people I know, gained a reputation for forcing products to release early. And there was that one infamous case where they released an alpha client....
Having the box right here about the only glaring things missing are fortresses and ships as in the plural. There is a second ship, Z.1 Destroyer(1934), that hasn't been released to the public but should be in the upcoming 1.9.x tree along with the Le Hardi and Javelin class in the pipeline. The only place infantry machine-guns are listed is in the manual. Which I believe TechPubs never did receive proper compensation from those wonderful people at Strategy First.
The reason for the quick port is that the Mac client was already running under OpenGL API. But I realize the smartie pants around here were already aware of that. Does Aces High have a Mac client?

Lazs, let it go dude. You got your message across, repeating it like this only drags you down to the level you put him on. None of the ww2ol guys were putting him on a pedestal in this thread, can't you let them have a decent conversation?
Imsneaky, I like the KoTH idea. But one thing I think ww2ol is a touch of the old AH bombing of assets at locations (ie field hangars, vehicle hangars, fuel and ordanance supplies). If they added targetable assets at towns which affected spawnability of certain items it'd make things a whole lot more interesting. For example, hitting fuel supplies might degredate the armour list, or hitting ammo supplies might reduce the number of spawnable sappers/ATGs etc.
People should try both games more, you get some interesting ideas from both, and often combinations of these ideas would work a treat.
-
See if I said anything like that about macs where rickb(wwiionline dev) could see it I'd be spawning in with some rainbow icon over my head. Most likely visible to both sides knowing my luck.
I doubt Mo would mind bad things happening to crazy halfbreeds who always post about when are the Italians going to enter the game. :D
Nice post Vulcan.
-
actually vulcan, next patch theyre adding factories, when we bomb these factories it slows down research development and production.
its sorta simple for now,but theyre going to add alot mroe detail to it so maybe you'll want to check that out sometime.
lol, rutilant, just noticed that, that was just my guess, but i shoulda just said "SOON".
drdrea, for your original box price there was 4 months given free as sparrow pointed out,and also there have been numerous welcome back programs where you had extra free play to try the game out again.
so you got alot of free play with the game if you bought it back then.
mini-D everything on the box is in the game except for plural ships (next patch or 2) and lmg's.
and you are only counting by the box, what about the many other things theyve added that arent on the box?
anyway, the RCE edition box no longer claimed lmg's and navy,so not since early on have promised features not been added.
-
If you have to spend so much time talking about what's going to be added... you should really ask yourself why. BTW... you do realize the irony of being able to bomb a factory and "slow research and development"?
As for having more than what is listed... that's expected. Surely they can't list everything. But, once again, they still don't have all of the items they did chose to list.
Oh yeah... they publisher made them do it.

Sorry buddy.4 months of crap to me is still 4 months of crap.I somehow dont feel like I got a bargin there in ANY way shape or form.Just because they,as Im sure they feel,Threw me a bone by extending the free trial doesnt make the matter that they sold garbage any less of a factor..Giving MORE garbage free doesnt make that remotly close to even in my book.Like I said. They should have done the honest thing and offered refunds. No matter how long ya give it free,Crap is crap. How long has it been till there "Close" to having everything in the game they professed to have on the original box?

I see it as a first step to a system that will become more detailed and complex as time goes on. Then again that would require some progressive thought instead of finding something to make fun of.
As for the here and now hmm maybe this might provide some hint.
