Don't I see Syria on that map?

Shouldn't Dowding be Syria?:p

I'm creating a map to help me visualize the game, to plan strategy. I have a tough time doing this sort of thing in my head... I need to put my hands on something and start shifting things around... or at the very least pull out a pen and paper and start scribbling.

I thought that a Photoshop file would be an ideal format to use- it's exactly like having a board with the peices on a table in front of you. Because all of the peices are on seperate layers, you can move them around, put them back where they were, and add and remove peices as needed just by copying or deleting them. You can also grab the pencil tool and draw arrows right on the map and get rid of them when you're done. You can make notes using the text tool, and you can save several versions of the file (if you have alternate strategies that you're contemplating). It's pretty versatile.

I'm almost finished it... If you want a copy just let me know and I'll email it to ya. Here's an example of what it's looking like.

I got the BS part down real well, now how do I move my units on the map, and how far can I move them?

Seems like an awful lot of trouble when the DPJudge provides this: http://www.floc.net/dpjudge/gamemaps/aceshigh1.gif?map=0.869050

Yeah Sand, I used that map as the template for mine and painted over it. Other than it automatically updating itself to show the player's new movements each turn - it's static. You can't juggle pieces around and sketch on it to visualize your's and your opponent's possible next moves.

I did see a java web-type map someone created for what I have in mind, but it was too limited for the abuse I plan on heaping on it.

Nash,

I wish you would put down the map maker and pickup a pen. I sent you a communication a couple of days ago, but haven't received a response yet.

Hey, I'm Germany, and I'm surrounded. I gotta talk to everyone, all the time! :)

Gotcha... makes sense. I've really only used one mapping program, RealPolitik (http://realpolitik.sourceforge.net/). It works well and has been my mapper of choice for years. There's also a program called PalmPolitik that I've downloaded but I've not tested out. It synchronizes with RealPolitik.

Watch him Nash. He's been bad mouthing all you guys and sweet talking me and frankly I've never trusted banana anyway. He'll stab someone in the back before this is over.

Title: Diplomacy: aceshigh1 *start*

It's a war game. On the surface, compare with Risk, but it's much more complex.

There are no turns. Everyone moves at the same time.

There is no element of chance. There are no dice, no cards.

The rules are here: http://www.avalonhill.com/rules/diplomacy.pdf

"He'll stab someone in the back before this is over." - Airhead

banana is this true???!!!

Sorry banana, your email got lost in the flood of Diplomacy emails that I got bombarded with initially. I ordered some beginners info package from the 1st judge and it sent me about 15 emails; yours landed in the middle of it. Anyhow... I just checked it and will fire you off a reply today. You really ought not talk about Airhead that way. He's always seemed like a good guy to me.

Thanks Sand for those links - will have a look.

(side note... unrelated... but I have nowhere to put this. Based on someone here mentioning Phil Hendrie, I downloaded a bunch of his shows from Kazaa... Man - it is hysterical! I can't believe I haven't heard of him before. The show I'm listening to at this moment is about a Korean War vet who killed his neighbour's french toy poodle because its barking was taunting him over the Iraq war. "It was saying "I am French, I am French, I'm a French toy poodle". "The owner got the dog's hair teased out as an intentional provocation to myself and other vets".

OK airhead resigned from the game and we are awaiting a replacement.

Not using judge to communicate because my account is having spam issues at the moment, and this baynesian filter is only half done....

Whats the current status anyone?
Title: Diplomacy: aceshigh1 *start*
Post by: Nash on June 15, 2003, 08:18:15 PM
Good question...

Last I heard from anyone was banana's email asking for a postponed start due to a death in the family causing him to be away until Monday (tomorrow). I replied that it was cool with me, but I haven't heard from anyone else.

I also haven't heard what the status is on Airhead's replacement. My understanding is that AKIron was going to fill that spot, but haven't heard if that's gone through or what the deal is there...

My understanding is that Sandman is going to be back from his biz trip today or tomorrow so hopefully he gets control of this and we can finally start this thing early this week.

Btw., I added a filter in my email that sends everything with "Diplomacy" in either the subject line or the body to be sent to a new and seperate folder I created. So far it's worked perfectly, keeping all my diplomacy email in one tidy place.

Biz trip...  nope... I've been in the Emigrant Wilderness, far from the internet and even cell phones.

Got an email... AKIron is out also so I need someone to step up and take England.

Sheesh...

Damn...is this game ever gonna start?  Do our moves that we already turned in still count?  I will be out of town for a couple of days but my moves are in so it should be cool.  Let me know if we need someone to fill in for AKIron.  I have a friend who might want to play.

Sandman, if we don't get someone from here soon, maybe we ought to solicit over at AGW. We should be able to find someone over there.

MT, much like chess, the rules are simple. The game is complex.

The rules are here:
http://www.avalonhill.com/rules/diplomacy.pdf

You also should read this:
http://www.diplom.org/Email/newintro.html#Movement%20Options

If you would like to read up on strategy and find other tools go to:
http://www.diplom.org/

To register with the judge, go to:
http://www.floc.net/dpjudge/dppd/

Send an email to me at sandman935@yahoo.com and I'll send you the privacy word that you'll need to join the game.

After registering with the judge and receiving the privacy word, send an email to dpjudge@diplom.org?subject=aceshigh1 with the following in the message body:

takeover eaceshigh1 yourPassword privacyWord
SIGNOFF

Replace "yourPassword" with a password of your choice and "privacyWord" with the word I'll give you.

Once you've been through the registration process, joining later games is a relatively simple task.

If you wish to contact me directly and it is during the evening, you can use AOL Instant Messenger (my username is "fnaqzna") or you can use ICQ (my number is 4612751). I'm also up on Yahoo Instant Messenger as "sandman935" and MSN Instant Messenger as "sandman935@hotmail.com". I use a program called Trillian for IM.

Not a bad idea... maybe we can do that next time and do a gunboat game. There seemed to be a lot of interest in the beginning. Now, I can't get just one player. Still... if possible, I'd like to limit this first go around to AH players. We all know each other. Certainly, there are some AGW players that are familiar here. If the rest of the players currently signed don't have a problem with going this route, it's fine by me as well. Okay?

Hehe, if we get Midnight Target to play, then we'll have a game well-stocked with AH Liberals. :)

I find it ironic that more conservatives haven't jumped on the Diplomacy bandwagon. Maybe there isn't enough shooting in the game for them.

A joke, only a joke! Put that gun down, Udie! :D
