Title: Cloud clusters
Post by: Arlo on June 07, 2003, 12:02:20 AM
Them things drop me from 20-40 fps to 8-11 fps (even reducing the video resolution to 640x480 16 bit).

Just sayin.

And when it happened some other weirdness seemed to happen too.

Enemy ack stopped shootin at me (which I guess is good since I couldn't react to it if I wanted to). And I witnessed opposing fleets sailing side by side bout 100 yds apart and the enemy fleet didn't ack or aaa me either.

Dunno what it is about that one particular cloud cluster texture that makes my 1.6 gig machine want to emulate my old 233 mmx Packard Bell. *chuckle* *ShruG*

Just a head's up to whoever can do anything bout it.

This is a Known issue on this map.

Hmmm...I'm running a PIII 667 with a GF 4 4200 and I have yet to see that much of a drop off, it does take a hit but not as bad as yours Arlo.

By the way, any succes vs. the Spit14s?  I seem to do better in the Hog and get my butt handed to me in the Pony.  Anyone else?

Which means ......

1: It's a known issue and someone's looking into fixing it?

or ...

2: It's a known issue and it can't be fixed but we're going to use this terrain anyway?

or ...

3: It's a known issue that may take a long time to fix so we suggest you invest in a rather expensive video card that may bump it up a little and make it playable until then?

Integrated ProSavageDDR KM266 graphics with 32MB shared video memory. In other words - my cheapie Hewlett Packard Compaq Presario's video card is on the motherboard and uses the motherboard's RAM. No extra scratch to invest in a card to plug into the AGP slot anytime soon.

But that really shouldn't be an issue. There's lots of nice terrains that I can fly just fine that don't use that one particular wicked frame sucking cloud cluster texture. If it's something that can't be edited in this terrain, I'll just avoid flying it and whatever other terrains that use it.

*ShruG*

Heaven help me if it ends up in any pac maps. :D

I've had more success with 14s than other Spits, to be honest. The F4U-4 seems to retain e and handle a bit better when slower. Seems to handle the verticle better too. Climbs better too. Flys good enough to dogfight in. ;)

Agreed.  I found myself flying against 4 14's and a 262 while trying to defend a squaddie while he was jaboing.  I used the vertical in the Hog and found I could somewhat keep em off my 6 but had to resort to HOing to keep em honest, and I hate going there but....

Sry for the abrupt reply, but it was late and I was tierd. Whenever we run this map some folks have an issue with the frame rate hit, I experance around about the same effect as you do Arlo, but I can still fight just fine so it's not a big deal for me personaly, I understand that for some it is a big deal, and unfortunatly we cant realy do anything about it, short of rebuilding the map. The map maker NUTTZ is semiretired from AH and the likely of this happing is well...kinda low.

I didn't think you were being abrupt, really ... just wanted the rest of the story.  When my framerate drops below 10 then the game becomes a slideshow for me and practically unplayable. I know some player created maps cannot recieve support like the rest of the game. So for me it's a neccesity to figure out which ones have this problem and if they can't be fixed to avoid them in the future.

Thanks for the response, Brady.

Their not always present, and only present in any given area for a fairly limited time.:)

If you say so ... they were over the fleet for what seemed like 30 minutes last night and when I logged they were still there. The fleet's where the F4U is. ;)

Best I can recall, somehow all the clouds in the world got focused into this one bunch.  Nuttz figured out how it happened after it was too late, and apparently the whole map has to be done over to get rid of it.  Consequently we have The Cloud of Death that drones around the map.  If you find it coming towards you, move to another area quick!

- oldman (whose frame rate drops into single digits when he looks at The Cloud)

Clouds can give a really big drop, even on my P4 2.4 GHZ with Radeon 9700 video card I get a drop down to 25fps (from constant 76 fps). Not sure what lowering the resolution would do. Doesn't bother me too much though, don't see those clouds all too often.

As for success in pony vs spit 14, I've had quite alot, they are very equally matched at low altitude for dogfighting.

GeForce 4 has done wonders for my system.

I'm running a 1.2G and still get 33 with the clouds...around 67 without.
