Ok Just got a quick question for you folks.
Which engine do you think is better Merlin III (the one thats in the spit 9) or a Pratt & Whitney R-2800 (the one thats in the P-47 and F4U)?
Just wanting to know which you think is superior.
-
was usually a Merlin 61/63/70 in spit IX's. Merlin III was Spit I!

LOL opps i'm sorry.........oh man lol well ok i ment the merlin 71
shows i'm really with it this morning.....
-
The Pratt & Whitney for reliability, but the Merlin for altitude performance and it also makes the plane more streamlined.

http://www.spitfiresociety.demon.co.uk/engines.htm < lot of good information on the merlin here.
I'm not sure the pratt and whitney was more reliable, it could just sustain more damage without quitting, my personal opinion is that radial engines are more suited to ground attack a/c, and inline's are more suited to fighters.
