The H2 is a piece of crap. Dune hit it spot on.

FYI, you know who owns the original first civilian hummer off the production line? (This same person owns 3 of them I believe..)

Hint: Movie star thinking of running under the republican ticket in CA. (That hint probably gave it away)

It's Awwwnald!  But I knew that without the hint.  I've wanted an original HummVee since he bought his but wifee says no way!

In fact, story I read said he bought a mil version which gave Chrysler the idea that it might be marketed as a civilian version.

BTW Too bad he's married to a Kennedy, but it's also kindof ironic too!:D

Bought a surplus Marine Corps Hummer, with a title, so I can drive it on the roads and not just off road, about six months ago.  Gotta say, it has been a blast to have, but it does have issues.

#1, the damn drive shaft tunnel about fries my right leg if I drive it any time longer than an hour.

#2, it loves fuel

#3, it is not the easiest thing to find a parking space for.

#4, parts are a bit pricey.

That said, it is fun to have, but will probably sell it after I get through the crisis of having to have one.  Ohh, and fixed the tunnel heat problem by insulating it with 5/8 inch silver foam covered with OD canvas tightly wrapped.

Bodhi,

Where did you get it and how much does such a beast run?

Chairboy,

I piad 9K for it with nearly bald tires, beat up body panels, no seats, no front bumper, horrible transmission, and no top.  Now it has new tires, bumper, seats, pintal for the required .50 when I have the half top on, and an armored hard top with ring, when I want full coverage.  I bought the hard top surplus for $1000.  I put a civilian tranny in it for the high gears on the hard top.  It gets quite the looks when I pull in anywhere with it, especially when I have the .50 mounted on it.  The .50 is a gas gun, although we have mounted a real one for giggles one time.  The body panels where the most time consuming, as they are riveted aluminum, and I being a sheet metal mechanic by trade, ended up making them myself.  It looks great, if anyone has space, I will send a pic to post.

H2 is one smurfy looking vehicle...

Don't ya love the ads on TV saying our SUV will  protect your family?  They tend to forget to mention that in the event of an accident your family sure might survive but the family you just hit won't see the sun come up again...

You can get surplus Hummers at most military auctions. There is a huge one that happens about once every three months at Warner Robbins AFB in GA. I helped my Dad take some stuff over while in college and we were there for about 5 hours one afternoon. The whole time they (decommisioning crew) were trying to burn the barrel off an M-60 tank with a hand held blow torch. They never got those barrels cut down but they sure did go through many, many torch bottles.

Actually, the early SUVs were death traps, built to the safety specs of a pick-up truck (i.e. none).  The heaviest part of the truck is the ladder frame, motor, and suspension.  The bodywork was as thin as practical in order to save weight and reduce costs.  The newer-design SUVs, like the Ford "E" line-up, the Xterra, Highlander, and 4Runner, are built a bit stronger but still suffer from the same basic design flaw: high center of gravity.

I love my 98 4runner, but it handles like a truck and rolls like a whale.  Sometimes I wish a good full-size station wagon was around - saw a souped-up Ford Torino wagon at a car show once that was pretty cool.  Amps in the back, fat Goodyears on the corners, 350 ci engine under the hood, twin pipes under the bumper.

If only the federal fleet gas mileage regulations hadn't exempted trucks...

A friend of mine got the second Hummer ever bought by a civilian.  He bought it from Motorola (IIRC) or whichever company designed the radios for them.  The Army sold the company a Hummer to put the radios suite together and didn't want it back afterwards.  So they sold it.  Fun to drive btw.

There is a new full size station wagon out now. The Chrysler Pacifica. Nice ride.
