Title: New damage "indicator" idea for CVs and Ships
Post by: Mini D on June 12, 2003, 05:35:08 PM
I was thinking about implimenting some kind of list to the ship as it gets damaged.

Basically, if a ship gets damaged, it starts to list.  This list would be corrected over about a minute or two, but the ship would ride a bit lower in the water.  Eventually, it would either capsize or sink.

Seems this could effectively reduce the effectiveness of the CVs depsite them not being destroyed.  Launching from them would become a bit more difficult as would reliable landings.  Also, this would make the rock solid 16" gun platform a little more shakey.

Just a thought.

It's an 8" gun on the cruiser:).  The whole ship damage model needs to be built from the ground up.  The list idea is just one aspect (flooding and counter-flooding) that could be implemented.  Specific damage to systems (guns, radar, C&C, elevators (doesn't prevent re-arming, but does prevent respawning) are just some examples of systems that could render a CV or other ship less then fully combat capable.  Accumlated damage could also be included, in the form of flooding (as you suggest) and fires (the primary killer of ships in combat).

Ship damage is somewhat bogus. Last night from a shore gun, I sank the cruiser with two hits, got 10 hits on the cv, and it just steamed away.

Yep, this is definitely a neglected part of the sim (yeah, I know...it's an air combat sim, but throw us a friggin bone!).  Any hit with a gun the size of an 8-incher will do some damage, at least to a lightly armored (or unarmored, like the CV) ship.  Even a battleship could suffer damage from an 8-inch AP.  Indeed, even smaller calibre naval arty could cause trouble, such as start fires, wreck upper works, and shear off antennas.  Hopefully, after AHII debutes, HiTech will be able to turn his attention to these other elements of the game.  He's talked about a lot of great ideas he has planned, so there's hope.
