Actually, the Ju-52 was designed as a single-engine aircraft, but proved to be badly underpowered; it was only after adding the two wing-mounted engines that it became the workhorse of the Luftwaffe as the Ju-52/3m. The '/3m' stands for drei motoren (three motors), to distinguish it from the original single-engine Ju-52.
