I like the graphic effects of dusk and dawn in AH, but I wonder if the 'annoyance factor' of the current nightime graphics is a greater customer negative than any positive realism added to the game?
Some examples of customer negatives would be:
-- We don't currently have cockpit or instrument lighting for aircraft that were night-capable.
-- I believe light source is modeled backwards. Currently, flying toward the light source (the moon) illuminates the panel and with the source at a rear quarter, darkens the panel.
-- We don't have 'Pathfinder' aircraft for marking targets for bombers.
-- Some players don't want to change their video gamma for a variety of reasons (i.e. too 'gamey', potential monitor damage, potential epileptic seizures from bringing up the map) :D
The net result is frustration or simply logging off.
The customer positives would be:
-- Sorry, I can't think of any.
Would it be possible to leave dusk and dawn and just eliminate nightime until more advanced aircraft, DirectX and video functions can be incorported in the future?

Interesting post. I looked at your location coordinates - Japan?
-
Nightime Cons:
1) You can't see squat unless you "gamma" up your monitor.
2) It always comes along at the worst times (usually as I log on).
3) People log off in droves.
Nightime Pros:
1) If your a Vampire you feel more at home.
-
PROS:
- You can really test the black level on your LCD monitor
- Its always a full moon...and werewolves give great perk bonus
- It ends
CONS:
- You either cant see crap or you pump up gamma...effectively nulifying the dark
- Arena number plumet
- I have to see channel 1 whines about the dark...and I cant see to squelch :p
-
That would be correct, beet1e.
A land with 4 seasons: 1 month of bitter cold, 1 month of hot, muggy weather, 1 month of rainy season and 9 months of road repair.
-
I just log. I can't see a thing but icons.
-
Thinking about it more...I would say dusk and dawn are worse than nighttime.
-
I still curious to hear a reasonable, positive benefit (to the user or HTC) for having nighttime.
Would sure like to hear from someone who looks forward to AH nights.
-
I fly buffs alot but not at night - too dark to calibrate, or else can't even see crosshairs to drop.
-
I used to like it when it was 1st introduced... but it grew old on me fast. I'll usualy log out as well.
Maybe if Icon range would vary with lights... we'd be able to use this nighttime to make "sneak" attacks somewhere on the map... dunno. It is immersive when you are starting to fly AH hough.. and the orange sunrise has an "Ohhhh look" effect.
PRO:
I take that time to eat or catch up on emails
-
Until we dont have real night fghters and we cantr simulate night fights darkness makes no sence. So I would suggest to shorten the night time to a minimum (i.e. 0s) but still have a dusk and a dawn.
-
Dusk and dawn is ok. It it the only way that we get a "realistic" environment with somewhat reduced visibility, esp. against the ground. Pitch dark nighttime as a whole is rather useless, reason few complain is that they do the "gammatrick" and think they have an edge.... And so do the rest....
-
Night blows. One of those things the "realism" folks asked for. Or should that be strat folks?
Hmmmmm.... :)
-
Oh, you must mean the realism of flying pure day fighters in a nightime environment.
Just another time to log and do the "honey dews".
Cuz there sure isn't much point in playing.
-
good for jabo, you usually can make out ground targets
lots of people go to ct, which is where the best action is
-
actually doing GV raids is great @ night cause they cant see you as well.
the drawback is dusk and dawn when the light goes @ that funny angle and GV's are like a nuclear blast of light on the terrain :(:(
if you dont time your GV raid right you will be spotted from the other side of the map.
ya i'd say i hate dusk and dawn more than night. i'll bet it's diffucult to model a setting or rising sun (the way light acts going through the extra atmosphere)
-
CV landings are a lil more challenging at night.
Keep the night!
:D
-
Folks,
There is free software that helps you adjust your gamma in the game by just a few key strokes --- makes night into day ---- its quick and easy to use.
Keep nights - use the gamma software instead...

Keep night....its fun!

AH night is one of the Arena's coolest effects and by far and away the stupidest idea to be inserted as a regular part of the MA.
AH night is also proof that 20 people complaining in the forum carry more weight than 100 logging off in the MA.

Can't think of any 'pros'. It was a novel idea and well done by HTC but just doesn't work out playability wise. If it was a little lighter, we had ample cockpit lights, runway lights, etc... it might be fun but other than that I would like to see it gone... As others have commented, as it is now I just log off.
-
"Night blows. One of those things the "realism" folks asked for. Or should that be strat folks? "
Hmmm, here's an idea, get rid of what little realism and strategy is left so the game will play just like quake...then rename it to quake.
The buffs had to learn to deal with a new bombsite and a reduced roll in the game. Can't the rest of you learn how to change your con icons to white and stop whining. When they switch to the new graphics engine, I hope they can add cockpit lights and search lights. I'd also like to see weather effects like snow and rain but I'm sure that would really upset the quakers.
-
Zipity good go, you used the rolleye thingy.
No ones complaining, no one is whining. The question was asked. The answer seems to be most log. Question/answer thing, nothing more, nothing less.
But your comment about realism brings up the question, what is realistic about shooting at a an icon when you can't see anything else ?
-
If you think it's a whine, then you miss the point.
An effect or feature should add value. I still haven't seen a reasoned response of the value added to strategy, game play or realism.
There must be a reason other than 'we spent lot's of time making it and we'd rather have something that irritates most customers than eliminate it until we have the time to improve it.' There is no logic in that.
AH is more a labor of passion than a managed business, and I understand quite well that you can't please everyone. But I wonder just how many are pleased at AH night?
And that was the purpose of this thread - to find out how many are pleased and share the positive aspect of AH night so I start enjoying it. :D
-
Guys and Gals,
Best of both worlds use "Powerstrip" it is a free download. If you want realism then don't download, if not, then download and install it. WHen it gets dark just press Ctrl Alt + to make it brighter and similarly Ctrl Alt - to get dimmer. It works like a charm
You will not complain about the night after this.
I hope that this helps those who dont know about this software

We're "quakers" because we don't like playing a game that is basically a black screen with sound effects? Sheesh.....

What's the point of changing your gamma?
To offset the night?
To give yourself an advantage over newbies or those who don't change their gamma?
-
long negative post deleted
why does htc do things like night and the chog to us. or their game if you want to put it that way.
say "whatever" over and over slowly as a mantra.

Fullback,
I think you missed the point. I have an ATI Radeon card and when it gets dark you do not see anything unless you alt tab out of the game and go throught the tedious process of changing the gamma. The game is unplayable if you dont. The ONLY reason I suggested to use the software is that it makes it very simple to change the gamma in game. I used to log off when I couldn't see anything.
So I truly did not install the software to get any advantage - I did it so I could see. If I did have this software to use as an advantage would I even mention it here?

Night only causes me to log....it either prevents me from playing when I have the time or ends my playing time.
Don't understand why it's implemented.
-
acetnt: Actually, I think we missed each other's point. :D

We have the same point - the game is unplayable. You are treating the symptom while I'm trying to cure the cause. Make sense?
-
Pros: I get to play the CT or the H2H servers for a while.
Cons: I can't see a thing and have more fun picking my nose than flying around in the dark.

You are quite right - the game is unplayable if you don't change the gamma. I know that I am treating the symptom but this is truely all I wanted to do since there are some players who like the night. I just could not play at all before without going through quite a few steps to change gamma. It was great when I was directed to this software by some friends . Just wanted to share the find is all.

Yeah, it's a wonderful feature.
Those that really don't like it... just log off.
Those that really don't like it but may only have this one period of time to play goober the gamma up to where it is something kinda like day, but not as good. It's a weird colored world that is at least semi-playable.
Of those that like night, a large percentage of them probably goober the gamma as well, thus negating their "like it" claim really.
There probably is some tiny minority that likes it and doesn't goober the gamma. But that HAS to be a tiny group.
-
OK, I missed the point. Rolling eyes at myself, it happens sometimes.
My not to well made point earlier in this thread is that because I like to fly jabo and bombers, night is a time when I can get to target a bit easier. I've never had a problem seeing a field or targeting a hanger at night with a set of bombs. If your into furballing I can see where night might not be as much fun but believe me, I still get shot down enough at night to know that some folks don't have a problem getting an angle that allows them to see the outline of my plane.
-
Oh hell ya, lets all go DL some program to make night into day.
I think night is a powerfull tool for special events or scenarios where Icons would be disabled and in flight radar, manned ground radar would allow for some INTENSE stuff but as far as a GAME is concerned, I cant use the night for any worthwhile time spent playing.
Is it just me or did they disable the 5 minutes of black inky darkness giving just the dusk/dawn play time? In any event, even the dusk/dawn stuff is less than fun to play in, even though it looks good. After a spell even dweebs should get sick of it.
-
I know of one benefit that dawn and dusk bring. If you are tooling along in a buff at 10k and you get in the nose gun, max zoom it, the CV shows up long before you would be able to see it in the daytime. It looks like a big orange rectangle. At first, I thought I was seeing a graphic artifact or something. :)
