Track a Japanese car, then track a german car (suspension) -- I won't have to post any further..let the corners do the talking.
Personally, if dependability were #1 on my list, I would have gone with a Honda or Acura. Handling was #1 though.
-
hate to interupt your track a car and 4 wheel drift discussion....
I just couldn't help but notice how far down the list Subaru finished. ;)
I have to give kudos to BMW on the Mini. A first year first run product that I've had 2 issues with.... a couple of others that I've heard about but not seen first hand. None of these issues have been drive train related (which is where most of the completely new parts are located ie engine and transaxle).
Volkswagen was a much more discouraging experience. Pontiac even worse. Acura was between the Mini and the Jetta... but not really above the Mini (Integra GSR) though my parents have had great luck with their 3.2 type-S.
I had horrible luck with my 91 525i and 85 Jag XJ-6. Its nice to see Jaguar finally up a little farther on the list. Their ride is second to none... now their drivetrain is catching up.

Subaru was down the list, but the list was only the cars that were better than average. Read the little note at the bottom of the list. Except for Porsche, the German cars didn't even make the list.
I think Rip is right that the average krautmobile (at least the relatively high end ones imported to the USA) will handle better than the average Japanese econobox. A base model Civic or Corolla has pretty flaccid suspension and tires. But if you go into the performance models the Japanese stuff handles just as well.
-
BMW was ahead of subaru funked. You may want to read that note yourself.

Doh, I'm retarded. LOL.

First thing Monday morning and I get 0WN3D.

The OT board equivalent of sneaking your score into a thread about air to air gunnery. (Name dropper)

Just have the artist tattoo a hashmark beside the "MiniD was here" label... no need in writing the whole thing over again.

Maybe if I owned the Jag in 85 and the BMW in 91. Both cars were 6 years old when I purchased them... at a very reasonable price. ($8000 for the Jag and $11,000 for the 525i). They were still very comfortable cars... but the engines and trannies as well as the electrical systems in both were [FatBastard]CRAP![/FatBastard].

Yeah owning a 70's through 80's Jag is no claim to fame. At least you didn't have one of those godawful V-12's.

cars are built for the needs of the customer, not all customers are "race car drivers"

Wow.. come-on Rip...You put meat(tires) and you can make a Escort out handle that BMW. (No pun intended)

Funked, just got about 400 miles (break in) on my new Yoko's ES100, can't believe how CRAPPY those German Continentals were! Big grin ear to ear after I got them mounted. :)
-
Cool, I know what it's like to go from all season tires to max performance. Lots of fun. Going waaaay deeper into turns now. :)
-
My 99 Audi A4 2.8 Quattro that I just bought has continental tires. Are these most likely the original tires? The car has 44,000 miles on it. Is continental a bad brand, or just merely not in the league of the Yokohama's?
-
Continental are fine tires, but most cars come from the factory with all season tires which give good treadwear and good foul-weather traction, but aren't very sticky on dry pavement. You can get tires with more agressive tread patterns and softer rubber which will handle a lot better, at the cost of tread life and a little bit of wet/snow traction. This is what Rip and I did. Rip went with Yokohama AVS ES100 which are Yokohama's second highest performance tire, and I went with Pirelli P-Zero Nero which is Pirelli's highest performance tire. In MN you are probably better off sticking with all seasons because of the rain in the warm months. But then again with AWD you might be just fine on max performance tires.
-

Not to mention the 6 feet of white stuff that visits during colder months! :D
-
Yeah I would probably run winter tires if I lived up there. What a lot of guys from our Impreza club do is this:
Get Plus-One (17") wheels with high performance tires for summer.
Keep the stock (16") wheels and put dedicated snow tires on them for winter.
-
http://www.tirerack.com is a pretty good place to get tires and wheels. Prices are very good, and they have great technical support. They actually have a test track at their headquarters which allows them to do controlled testing. We have a dedicated TireRack rep for our Impreza club and they are extremely helpful.
-
Oo.. Rip-man. You should like those AVS ES100's are nice. Some of my pal's have those on their Miata's. Only thing is at the end of their life they get loud! Like my Toyo's T1-S (great in rain). Just don't drive them in the snow!
Funk, (we have our own rep as well) I'm going to the P Zero Nero's as well. I though of the S03's but since these got notice better I'm gonna jump ont he band waggon too.
-
A lot of the Impreza club guys run S-03's, I'm sure those would rock too.

Greg, right? He's got his own forum at the Bimmer board now too.

S-03's are quality, but reported to tramline quite a bit..great for the track but so-so for a daily commuter.
-
Tramline.. try driving with these Toyo T1-S's and plus my alignment doesn't help.
For the local autocross I'll drive to the event with my worn Azenas on 14" rims. Untill I can pick up a truck or Jeep to towe my ride to events. Till them I'm stuck with ultra hp tires

We have a guy called Luke. Tirerack is scary. :)

Back to the suject fellas. :)
Funked, the japanese let the germans do all the R&D, then they just copy it. They always have. Especially body styling. ;)

Ah. Yeah, you can say that again! Ching Ching, Bling Bling! :)

Not to goof on Dripsnore, but maybe Funky can explain just how racing around public roads, speeding in your dealership sold wannabe rally sport race cars, is any less detrimental than drunk drivers going to the store at the speed limit.
My GTP will blow you both off the track in pure horsepower, but I don’t speed.
If you speed, you risk lives. Fact.
lol
-
You're losing your touch Creamo. Too much fish and rice I suspect. Get some beef in ya, Boy!
-
I don't know what's dumber, his delusions about his Pontiac, his false assertion about speed and risk, or the inference that we are street racers.
I think Creamo's woman is not giving him enough loving. Time for a group hug. Creamowich.

I don't understand why anyone would think it is OK to bag on someone based on the ethnicity of his wife.
poor form IMHO.

im just wondering, that mercedez benz shoulnt be durable ...
i never ever saw so much durable car
basicaly MB lose price most slowest of all cars because its durability .... so im wondering

34 years old ... drive it daily (traded honda civic to 17 year old for it)
think the germs make a decent car :)

What’s the GTP HP rating compared to the Subaru, or the “Im a wife of a middle management husband” 3 series BMW?
Are the DUI related deaths more or less than speed related deaths on the roads of America?
You are not street racers, you just pretend to be, noted.
My woman not giving me enough? Funky pants, please. The last snapper you seen was on a menu, blackened, your only choice.
I'll hug you, but don't make me get cruel on Droopys wife. I draw the line there.

Middle management? I'm flattered! (Psst, I make more than my manager )
-
Exactly.
So why did you buy a “wife’s” car, and flaunt it while we all made fun of you for it, which was the point?
Hook up into the 5 Series already, Mr. Big Dollars.

227 3085 here :p

And thats the way you should reply Funkyshorts.
TY.

He was also instrumental in the design and construction of the Tiger I. Learned that not long ago.
Oh, and:
217(crank)/2700 in stock form
~240(crank)/2650 as it sits

Funked, that WRX of yours is a porker. ;)
I miss the water pumper though... a hair shy of 3,000 lbs and a hair over 300 *at the wheels*
Track. Beast.

You do realize that the 530 series is 1 second slower than the 330 I'm sure. Not too many 5 series at the track, a sprinkling of 540i's but 3 series and M's usually at the track. (540i is a V8 with identical 0-60 time and the 330 will lose the 540i on the first curve)
5 series: Family car
3 series: sports car that can carry the family

Saur I think you have 0wn3d me until I get that Vishnu kit. I bow down to your superior thrust ratio. I still have a better drivetrain though. :p
If Rip was a real man he'd get an M3 with SMG.
GScholz, mine is a manual 5 spd. I doubt those Pontiacs are too bad in corners though. They seem to come with very agressive tires and run pretty low.
-
Rip, dont mind Creamo - he's just suffering from RWD envy. ;)
-
BTW I got some more rice, an exhaust kit from Prodrive (who build and campaign the WRC Impreza). The stock exhaust is just too quiet, very wimpy. I doubt I have increased power much, but there is definitely a little less turbo lag.

Admittedly, Im not too familiar with Subaru tuning - what does the "Vishnu" kit consist of?
I always thought you could swap ECUs ("chip" the car) for a substational gain, or swap blowers for a larger gain pretty easily. I dunno if there is much to be had with a downpipe or exhaust on the WRX. I do know that exhaust for the 951 would have been a complete waste of time: 3-4 HP for a $1700 cat back setup.
Factory FI is a wonderful thing for tuners. More boost... bigger injectors... even more boost... bigger injectors... old turbo isnt big enough... bigger blower... more boost... bigger injectors...
Hehe, it never ends. :D
Keep on modding that thing... in 6 months, 300HP just wont "do it for you" anymore.

VVVVVVRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRO OOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM MMMMMMM!

I'm not going to mess with the motor until the warranty is finished. Actually I'm not going to mess with anything until I get some debts paid off.
But in fantasy land where I have some money to spend, and assuming I still have no life and want to spend all my money on toys, I'm going to do the Stage Zero or Sub Zero because of Kalifornia's draconian emissions requirements. Here's the info:
http://www.vishnutuning.com/stage.htm
Power gains are mostly from remapping the ECU to run more boost at the expense of emissions and fuel mileage and detonation margin.
Of course before I do something silly like that I would install a Stoptech brake kit. I can already get the stock brakes to fade a little on some of the downhill twisties around here. With ~50 more hp I would definitely need bigger brakes.

I have decals on my pants, and sponsors on my helmet.

Funked, M3 with SMG was planned for 2005 (if gainfully employed) however the wifes wheels are getting 80,000 miles on them, shes next for a new car. She's leaning towards a 5 series (finger>>Creamo ;) ) but I've got a year and a half to convince her we need at least a 540i if (gasp) not, an M5(used) :D:D
-
M3 + SMG is the one BMW I could actually get excited about. I considered getting an MR Spyder because of it is available with that type of transmission, but when I sat in that car my knees were wedged into the steering wheel.
-
What I'm reading in this thread is "Blah blah blah, pedal to the metal my fellow mid-life crisis homies!"
I'd school you peeps in the corners on a bicycle!

This thread is almost as good as Urchin's KBman whine thread...but it just doesn't have the right stuff to beat it. Y'all are gonna have to try harder.
Rip - Post more pictures of BigMoneyWaste and of your carpeted garage and the logo...perhaps you could photoshop your house and insert a banner hanging on the outside of it (if it isn't already there in reality)
Funked - Get into some super technical talk about some gay accessory for your rice burner. If you could liken the sound of your exhaust to a Manza tip, that would be super!
Creamo - It's time for screwdrivers and more fruity drinks that should have umbrellas in them. Get on it, stat!
SW & Vulcan - A dissertation on the proper use and spelling of l337 speak would do nicely.
And for my part, I would be happy to interject a story about my super sweet 84 Mazda B2000, replete with $400 Maaco special paint job, Holly street racer carb, exhaust headers going out to a snappy muffler, and the fantabulous camaro seats crammed into the cab. I used to be 4\/\/350/\/\3!
