Title: Chess-piece country governments
Post by: devious on June 16, 2003, 09:32:19 PM
Any thoughts on the MA countries'  governments ?

I bet Knitland is a Monarchy, with the all-knowing Knit Emperor running things.

Bishland is an USA-like Plutocrarchy, ruled by the Lavochkin and Kawasaki conglomerates.

Rookland most likely has soviets all too  busy arguing with among themselves.

I was thinking that the Bish might be a communist government. I mean look at all the self proclamation about them being the best. Sort of reminds me of the old Soviet Union talk about being the true leaders of the world. Also the Bish tend to go for quantity of armed forces over quality of armed forces which quantity tends to have a quality of its own.

The Rooks remind me of the USA. All alone against the world while no one ever comes to their aid but they always jump to help someone who is down; then they get blasted for it.

Knights remind me of a monarchy. No ifs, ands or buts about it. You fall in line with the specific missions or you get left to get steamrolled by either the end running Bish or Rooks.

Kawasaki?  I don't see very many Ki-61s flown by the Bish.

Maybe you mean Kawanishi, the producer of the infamous N1K2-J Shiden-Kai?

my take....

Knights - dominated by strat obssessed squads

Rook - mostly dogfighters

Bish - Kamikazies sprinkled with a little bit of everything due to being default 2weeker country.

Leaders with kids mentality?
Arrogance?

Land grabbers?
Suicide bombers?
Eternal furballs?

Yep, that's my country.
Wait! you talking about the knights or the middle east?

I think Devious got it right first time. We Bish's are the good guys.

In WW2 terms I see the Bish's as the Allies. The Nits as the Germans and the Rooks as everybody else because they always lose and are normally completely surrounded.

The Nits are the real enemy of the Bishops.

Rooks - Klingons
Bish -  Ferrengi
Knits - Federation

Saw - Geek

I would rather compare the countries with pubs:

Bishland: The Blue Oyster Bar
Knitland: Sauerkraut Stub'n
Rookland: Moe's

Sarcasm really is hard to get across in writing. Maybe I should have just said that Devious is correct. Although I do think that if you are a Knight and don't follow the crowd you will soon be swimming in Bish...uhh shark infested waters with lots of chum around you.

Rooks:  Some good, some bad, some nice, some not.
Knights:   Some good, some bad, some nice, some not.
Bishops:  Some good, some bad, some nice, some not.

Being that I'm generally a country-hopping fiend, I find it hard to characterize any side differently than any other.  And for good reason, of course, since Aces High merely constructs artificial "country" boundaries without any sort of cultural or historical precedent.  We have no reason to believe that any one country behaves, on average, substantially differently than any other when we account for things like relative number of players, location on the map, etc.

Generally, I founds all countries to be similar.  All three sides have their aces, generals, and slobberdonkeys, but just for ****s and giggles:

Knightland:  The Rebel Alliance.  Led by a crazy old man and some wierd, ugly woman with short hair, organization is usually unattainable, and the only times things go their way is when the MAW's are set loose to smother their target and no one is home to defend.  Other citizens of Knightland are constantly vying for power which hurts the overall war effort.  Knightland is not unlike feudal Japan.

Rookland:  (No Name).  A band of roving privateers.  Some huddle together for security, but they are found in groups no larger than four.  Individualistic behavior and tactics in the air make for a collection of some fine fighters, but very poor overall strategy. No government to speak of.  Rookland is comparable in scope to the Discovery Channel special "Walking with Cavemen."  No communication, no plan, no chance.

(trumpetts sound)

Bishland:  The Empire.  Veteran flyers counting on team play and tactics.  The success of the group is far more important than success of the individual.  If one low, friendly plane is surrounded by 4 enemy fighters, the 10 high Bish will not intervene... whats the loss of a single airplane?  Insignificant.  Bishland can be compared with Soviet Russia or WWII Japan in mindset.  There is no escape, resistance is futile.
