Title: Air Turbulence
Post by: XNachoX on June 18, 2003, 08:19:04 PM
I was thinking about AH the other day and why it doesn't seem nearly as real as real flying, and I thought about the lack of wingtip vortices, propwash, thermals, etc.  On a good flying day you'll be tossed around a bit by turbulence and it gives you something to do.

I hope to see the implementation of some sort of Turbulence model in AH2 that would heighten the reality factor for me.

Yup, fully agree (And have suggested it in some previous threads) but the general consensious of opinion was no :(. can't see how you can have a serious flight sim without it myself.

It would be cool to be inside a plane when it suddenly vibrates...makes a vibrating sound...would add a lot to immersion.  In AH, the planes seem to fly way too smoothly.

Went up today with my instructor on a calm  day with blue skies and sunshine, and the plane was bouncing around constantly.  I had to make constant control inputs to keep the plane on course, and for me that's the most enjoyable experience.

it will be nice for reality but bad for game play
Imagine this whine about random turbulence, same like random damage for engine or guns jam. Noone will like it on MA
Of course nice addon for SEA or CT

Why would people complain about turbulance?

All it would do is put off the air-quakers, and isn't that a good thing?

- i cant hit anything, lets try HO only
- i cant hit anything, better i take another ostwind
- i cant hit anything, lets do another kamikadze jabo raid
- i allmost got him when f*** turbulence destroy such a nice shoot

enough?

U feel turbulences when u sit in real plane cockpit. When u sit on PC u not have real flight simulator like is used for pilots traning.
All what u can see will be shakes and atlitude drop on gouges.
Imo not to feel correct sittng on chair. Most of players even not have FFB sticks

turbulences are really challange but for well trained pilots, not for newbies from MA
Personal id like to see this, but it will be not good for HTC
AH2 will be still mmog not real simulator

I don't see how it would affect your ability to aim the reticle, and it would never destroy a shot from 300 yds. or closer.  Maybe from 500-1000 yds. it will, and that and that is a GOOD thing.  It will help stop the insane shot distances we currently see.  It wouldn't be hard to have convincing turbulence with head bob and camera shake.  It would give you something to do on long flights out, and autopilot can still take care of it if you don't like having to micro-manage.

It would ... look IL2 FB when you fly in turbulences, you aim for the guy then suddenly your cross air is off ... &^%$#@ and you miss. Really irritating when you are not flying an ubber plane and you have only this one shot to get the guy.

what I love from IL2, is moderate turbulences when you fly in the clouds. it's a nice touch.

Think HTC mentioned this .. proably was Pyro ... said something like (Wind and tubulance are to complicated to simulate effectively and we don't wish to put any 'random' model's in place)

Which is why the current wind model is basic (but not random)

how about you tie your chair to your washing machine and make 'brrrrrrm' and 'vrrrrrrt' noises, then cut your joystick wires so you get intermitant losses of control?

that would simulate turbulance nicely and we can keep AH the way we like it :)

hehe I wouldnt mind some turbulance etc but I would prefer it be an option. I think there could be quite a few optional features added that would enhance CT or SEA arenas whilst in MA we could have the slightly less demanding setup.

I think at the very least, we should have prop-wash modeled. That is not a random thing and could be made into a simple model in this sim.

When I flew at Air Combat USA, I went through the prop-wash of the other A/C. It was noticable but not serious to the flight path I was taking. However, in the game, it could become a defensive weapon for experienced pilots and would give some of the heavy bombers a break from the 6 O'clock tail sitters with thier 20mm cannons.

I like 6 o'clock tail sitters:D

I love this too, it's very well modelled IMHO. Certainly adds to the immersion factor.

i really like this idea but

simply chose

turbulence or better fps

fps is a winner;)

I don't think turbulance would effect FPS that much.

the wing loading on these planes is much higher than a cessna
turb would not be nearly as significant
plus if you cannot feel the turbulence i think it is just fediddleing annoying to see the screen bouncing around without the accompanying sensation

I think maybe just instead of having air turbulence, just kinda as a special effect that doesnt add anything, just little vibrations in the, not enough to really move it around.  I was watching a movie of medal of honor:allied assault spearhead the other day and i noticed that when all the paratroopers were hooking up there was and occasional vibration in the plane, along with like  a little sound that sounded like a wooddonut of the plane rattling.  I thought it added a lot of immersion, making it feel like you were in a plane much more.  It would not effect gameplay at all, but when maybe in a b17 it would just vibrate a bit making it a lot more life-like.
