Title: Next Sun Squad Ops: "No Day at the Beach"
Post by: ghostdancer on June 18, 2003, 10:18:00 PM
ADMIN CM: Ghost Dancer / Stegahorse
SETTING: Eastern Front, Crimea
TIME FRAME: Mid-Late 1943

DESCRIPTION: (write up by Stegahorse)
The summer of 1943 the German Army has launched a major offensive against the Kursk salient. However, the Russians defenses were well prepared and when the Germans struck the Russians were waiting for them. The Germans quickly found that they had put their foot almost literally in a bear trap.

In an attempt to try to relieve pressure on the Kursk front and to deny the Russians lend-lease supplies trickling in from the south the Germans unleash an operation from Crimea to expand their holdings along the Black Sea. Limiting Russia to only a northern supply route and hopefully causing the Russians to transfer troops toward the South and away from Kursk.

The German XVII Army must hold the Crimea and have been tasked with expanding their holdings. The Russians see an oppurtunity to turn the Germans southern flank; As the German Army is heavily engaged at Kursk, the ports on the Black Sea can be re-opened to them with a successful offensive.

The LA-5N has been a solid fighter for the Russians but the new and faster LA-7 is starting to reach the front in small packets. Will it be a match for the Luftwaffe's FW190-A5 and 109G10 that the Germans are starting to recieve in small numbers?

NOTE: This is not exactly historically accurate but is a good setting for the operation and we have included a few 1st line planes that actually starting seeing service in 1944. But since this campaign is for a time of mid-1943 to 1944 we will say that some of them could start showing up at the front (see attrition and resupply notes below).

----

SPECIAL RULES:
This Squad Ops is going to experiment with a version of attrition and resupply as discussed with Viff, Flyboy, and Ramzey in another thread. Specific rules will be forthcoming. However, planes will be group into 1st line, 2nd line, and 3rd line. 3rd line aircraft cost no points to fly. 2nd line cost 1 point and 1st line 2 pts. If you lose your plane you lose the points. If you keep your plane your squad gets to keep the points and also gets resupply points in the next frame.

So every squad CO will be face with the decision on how to spend his squad points for their task (put a few people in 1st line planes, go with 2nd line, or bank the points for next frame and go with 3rd line of some mix).

Resupply points will be affected (reduced) by how much damage is inflicted in the current frame of your countries facilities. Your bases get plastered then don't expect much in the way of new resupply points. Prevent your bases from getting hit and get the full amount of resupply points.

We will also being using shifting fronts.

We are trying a few new things in this Squad Ops to see how they go after several of you requested them. Please bare with any bumps along the way. :)

----
