Title: Diplomacy Game! aceshigh1 needs one player!
Post by: Sandman on June 20, 2003, 11:29:36 AM
Anyone interested? We need someone to take England. The game is stalled and we haven't even started yet.

If so, read on:

The rules are here:
http://www.avalonhill.com/rules/diplomacy.pdf

You also should read this:
http://www.diplom.org/Email/newintro.html

If you would like to read up on strategy and find other tools go to:
http://www.diplom.org/

To register with the judge, go to:
http://www.floc.net/dpjudge/dppd/

Send an email to me at sandman935@yahoo.com and I'll send you the privacy word that you'll need to join the game.

After registering with the judge and receiving the privacy word, send an email to dpjudge@diplom.org?subject=aceshigh1 with the following in the message body:

takeover eaceshigh1 yourPassword privacyWord
SIGNOFF

Replace "yourPassword" with a password of your choice and "privacyWord" with the word I'll give you.

Once you've been through the registration process, joining later games is a relatively simple task.

If you wish to contact me directly and it is during the evening, you can use AOL Instant Messenger (my username is "fnaqzna") or you can use ICQ (my number is 4612751). I'm also up on Yahoo Instant Messenger as "sandman935" and MSN Instant Messenger as "sandman935@hotmail.com". I use a program called Trillian for IM.

Awright Syz - welcome aboard! Thanks for joinin' and letting us get this thing underway, finally.

Sand - are the orders we've submitted still good, or do we need to resubmit them? And when is the deadline for having all orders in?

Your orders are still good. New deadline is Tuesday at 20:00, IIRC.
Title: Where
Post by: Syzygyone on June 21, 2003, 08:31:12 AM
Where do we get a list of who is what country.  I need to know these things.

Oh, and by the way, I've enlisted the Americans on my side.

Thanks

Send some press, everyone seems to be using their AH handles in their title.

I used to know who was who... I think Nash is Russia and Hortlund has France (or was it Austria)?

If it's the one I think you're talking about... It's Dave Matthews Band.

Gentlemen:

I forgot how much fun this game is!!!;)

I am sure I've already been lied to about 12 times!:D ;)

Seriously though, is everyone okay with the three-day-between- moves time frame.  It seems slow but I won't seek to shorten it if everyone else is happy with it.

Also, I assume everyone is making communication through the judge, as opposed to otherwise.  Have we outlawed outside email communication?  I won't be doing it since the judge does a nice job of keeping track of things for me. I was just wondering!

GL all!

Except for Sand being able to read the emails sent via the judge, I'm not sure what the difference is between going through it and emailing someone directly. Rather, there is none. So, I dunno why anyone would feel the need to email someone directly.

I reckon that because Sand has to sit out and babysit us he should at least get the voyeuristic fun of watching you guys backstab eachother (I of course am above all that).

3 days is actually not that slow... when ya consider that some moves may rely on a lot of back and forth negotiations... it will probably not be enough time in a few cases I bet.

If possible, please use the judge. This way, I get to read everything. It's kinda fun reading all of the lies and double-talk.
Title: Good Idea
Post by: Syzygyone on June 23, 2003, 06:13:01 PM
Sandman:

As the master, you can see everything.  It would be a great idea if you could track, with a short summary, all the lies, deceptions, and changes of positions, i.e. germany has told France that it will help them against Russia and vice versa.  It would make very  interesting reading.

I will use only the Judge sol Sandy get's his kicks too!.

See you round the world!

No biggie either way.  Just thought it might be interesting in retrospect!
Thanks for mastering!

I'm not saying I can't... Imagine a heavy sigh as I count the number of hours of sleep I did not get last night. :)

It's a good idea... maybe I'll secretly write a website and after it's all said and done, it might be fun to read. :)

Sandman, in my only other game of Diplomacy, one of the most entertaining aspects of it is the Master's analysis after each turn(after all retreats have been performed). It would be interesting to see your analysis of what's going on, who's growing, who's on their way out, etc...

Of course, you would be analyzing from only the moves on the board, and not your insider info. ;)

If you did that, the AH community would have the opportunity to add their two cents in, and it could get fun in a hurry.

Yeah.. that'd be very cool. Plus for guys like me who are rookies and don't know a whole lot, it'd be a great thing to learn from.

At the very least though, just saving all the emails in a seperate folder or something, sorting them by date and making them available to us to read afterwards would be swell.

One downside... All my email before June 7 evaporated.

BTW why is Syz sending messages in couplet fashion like he's paraphrazing Hamlet? This is 1901 afterall. The 'doth, thoust and wouldst' dropped out of usage centuries before. :D

We need to create an AAR-taunt thread.

Sandman...that would be your job :)

LOL, I was thinking the same thing. Perhaps the King's ministers will whisper in his ear to take on a more 20th century accent in his speech. :)

Btw, what is the sequence of events for the reinforcements?

Is it diplo-movement-reinforcements-diplo-movement, or
diplo-reinforcements-movement-diplo-movement?

Or in other words, this is the fall 01 turn...will the reinforcements be placed on the map BEFORE the movement is executed for the spring 02 turn?

Yeah I know I know...read the rules, but I'm too lazy right now.

After each turn,  retreats are made(if any). After the fall retreats, the the winter builds take place, where we add or remove any units that we gained or lost. Then we start the cycle all over again.

So the cyle is....

Spring moves
Spring retreats
Fall moves
Fall retreats
Winter builds

Ok, thanks.

And what are the rules for placing out reinforcements? Only in dots in the home country or something?

Yes, all builds must be placed on one of your home(original) supply centers.
