Title: LCD monitor opinions, please
Post by: qts on June 20, 2003, 03:07:09 PM
I'm tired of lugging a heavy CRT montor to meets, so I'm thinking about getting a decent-sized LCD monitor, and my eye has alighted on the Samsung Syncmaster 191T.

I'd appreciate peoples' views on this and other similar  monitors.

Games played will be AH (duh), Toca Race Driver, UT 2003, other sims. The monitor will spend much of its life used for 2D work.

Make sure it has a low pixel response time or else your gonna get "ghosting" in your games

There are some GREAT modern CRT monitors out there with pixel response times so low that ghosting is almost unnoticable....spend a few extra $$$ on a brand with good respones times.....also be sure to check what the manufacturers idea of a defective monitor is.  LCD screen makers seem to think that its OK to have a few bright red pixels in the middle of the screen....typical specs require 5-7 pixels before they will honor the warrenty.

This is one of the key areas holding my LCD purchase back.  Im not spending 2-3X the $$$ for a screens that can have multiple bad pixels and the manufacturer says "too bad sooooo sad"

Pfunk,

Since I have a monitor that is showing it's age (5+years of heavy use) I am in the market for a LCD as well. Could you define "fast pixel response time"? I do not know what would be considered "fast".

16ms or lower is fast.

I've had good luck with my viewsonic.  good picture, no blown pixels after 1 1/2 years.

I've seen them at newegg.com for about $200(19") with a 3 year warranty.  much better than the $600 I paid.

You don't really get the refresh rates you'd get with a crt monitor. but still ok (1280x1024 75hz).  I really like not having the light reflections off the monitor though.  with the old crt I'd get so much reflection that if someone opened a curtain while I was flying I couldn't see anything.

Apparently, LG makes a LCD screen specially aimed at gamers, it has a very low latency

LG Flatron L1710B

Hitachi also has a low-latency 17" LCD out

What resolution do you run AH at?  I don't know a lot about LCD monitors when it comes to ghosting or bad pixels, all I know is that an equal sized LCD monitor usually has a lower max resolution than a CRT monitor.  So if you wanted to run AH at 1600x1200 on an LCD, you'd need to get probably at least a 21" screen, whereas you can do it on a 19" CRT monitor for much cheaper.
