Title: Shane: WOW.... gunnery
Post by: bustr on June 20, 2003, 07:15:13 PM
Shane, I did as you suggested in our last thread. I also changed my gun sight to ring and dot. The ring showed me how badly I was judging lead and elevation at 300d+-. Thank you for the advice.

The P51D was a "WOW" kinda kick. I read Soda's review on the pony, and the 1 notch of flaps is a great technique. It helps get you over the top, climb out with drop tanks, turn a little tighter than a spit expected:D, pull out of a compression dive and do a slow spiral climb to make other ponies who dont know better stall and fall.

I discovered this during a fight at 21k with another 51. We merged, I went high, he went around flat. I came down too fast and passed behind his turn. I droped a notch while pulling up in a right hand spiral past him on wep. He stayed behind and 480D lower following me for 6 turns. At the 7th I closed flaps. rolled to him and dove down past his tail and away. Pulled back up and around to him and he fell down past my nose in a flat spin.:D I stayed high watching if he would recover, eventually he did low and slow. So I nosed down came up under him and poofffh he was gone with a 1sec. burst.

Turning off tracers really helped. I focus on the ring and dot calculating my aim now instead of trying to walk the tracers. I dove into a furball and got a few sprites on anything I snapped at. I still have alot of work on this. You were right, I think I'm walking them, but now I'm not spraying. I still hate PJ's. What does it take to kill them with .50's. I nailed a PJ down its right boom and got smoke, but it still stood on its tail from below and blew my kester off..grrrrr:mad:

I flew off-line with the LA-7 and the new sight. I've been shooting way too low and too late on snap shots, and too low on eveything else. Those 20MM drop really fast. Now with the ring I'm seeing just how much I've been jerking the nose around to attempt snap shots instead of knowing where to point. Saw that with the poni in the MA last night.

The La7 guns are some of the toughest to get used to so don't worry if you have some troubles with them to start with.  The difference between US .50's and La7 20mm is unreal, sometimes a transition through a plane with hispanos can help (those 20mm are awesome).

When attacking P-38's, remember they are very large targets so take shots all the time and lead a little more than you might think.  I found a number of people would lead for the rear of a plane while you likely want to lead a P-38 a little more than that.  The 38 is a dangerous opponent though, a lot of good sticks fly them very well and the firepower on them is amazing.

Bustr, try the two-gun SHvak option on the La-7. They seem to shoot much flatter than the B-20s. You have less firepower, but have a greater duration of fire with 200 rnds per gun vs 150 rnds for the B-20s. I usually opt for the two-gun set up and find it more effective for deflection shooting as I don't have to pull the nose as high as I do for the B-20s.

My experience with gunsights is this; the better marksmen could do as well without a gunsight. It is really only a reference point, a booger on your monitor could serve the same purpose. My view is that if you are actually aware of the sight in your field of vision, then it is probably an obstacle to your gunnery.

My regards,

Widewing

after you feel ur gunnery over all has improved, you'll find yourself wanting to lose the circle and go back to a simple dot.  my dot is one size bigger than the stanard dot... to help it show up a bit better.

glad the suggestion is helping you.

Shane could you post your gunsight?

not since the bbs doesn't support attachments.

my gunsight is a simple modification of a plain ole dot.  open that dot sight with paintshop, then find the next biggest "square" and click that over the current one. then save as whatever.

basically just a little bigger dot.

no circles or other distracting lines.

not sure if the dot sight is posted anywhere, used to be but probably gone with the rest of the bbs attachments.

if you have to do it the "hard way", open the default ah dot and circle gunsight, fill in the cirlce, and then make the dot a bit bigger as mentioned above.

try this one.

non intrussive, and it has reference lines for angle shots.
it's a holographic sight so e-mail for the file if you want it.
e-mail is in my profile.

Gentelmen, thank you for your support. I think most any gunsight works...At this time the ring and dot showed many deficences I was unaware of. Your tips and experience are more important than the sight model. Each of you has in your own way contributed to an increase in my skill and knowlege. I have a renewed excitement about ACM because of your kind responces. I hope that I can contiue to ask questions and all of you are always willing to teach me.

I have so much to learn and you all are such repositories of knowlege and good cheer.

Thank you,

Thanks, Guys...

My sight is an, "illuminated" hybrid of the 190A series, and the USN A2G reticle. never had any problems with it, but it's always nice to experiment. especially since I'm grounded, I may as well try some new things.

I use this one for nearly every plane I fly except for the Spits and IJ aircraft. Then I go with the historical sights for them.

not to knock any of the nice sights out there, but this is something i learned in AW (it had that lead computing sight, if you recall - or were unawares, sort of like a modern LCS, but it wasn't perfect and net lag had an effect on things)....

fly the plane, not the pipper (sight)....

this is why i like a simple dot sight.

Shane is correct....the 13th has used what we affectionately call the Dot of Death for some 12 years.

Sometimes simple is a good thing.

And here is the 21st Century version of the "13th TAS Dot of Death (TM)" in an illuminated rendition ...

Right click on the pictures ... choose "save picture as" and download to your harddrive. Move to your \sights folder (rename/backup your current default.bmp before).

Try it Shane ... ya might like it.

uhhhh....  all they did for me was block out the entire gunsight with red/black with the glowing dot in the middle... couldn't see thru it at all....

??

ok, i see, had to crank the alpha down... hmm i'll give it a go... seems like it'll work out ok for me.

Make aircraft glow by editing your textures for the planes you want to make glow. Use the color designated for the "Glow" Effect on the target recticles in certain places on the planes... Wingtip markers etc. Might also be a way for HT to model nav lights...

Same could be done using the colors designated as transparent. But then only you wouldn't see your invisible plane...

Anyone think this might work?

In theory, not in application. Light sourcing comes form one location. Youre talking about rewriting the entire hardware, let alone the code..HTC never gonna go for that.

The planes ...I wonder, if the testures are duplicated in alpha texturing....makes me wanna go see for myself...LOL talk about gaming the game, and painting a target on my bogies, for real!
