Okay man..how about getting a PBEM game started tonight?
Great game...starting to enjoy it now.
-
Ok bud, you're on. Which scenario do you want to try?
Could I please be the Japanese? I'm playing the Allies in both my other games.
-
Sure man, you can be the Japs.
Let's start slow and do the Coral Sea scenario first. It's my first PBEM and first go at playing the Americans.
You go first as the Japanese I think...will you just e-mail me the file?
-
Yep, I'll send you my first turn tonight.
What is your email address again?
-
What are you two playing?
banana you coming to the CON? I saw Curval's name on the list, but I don't remember seeing yours. Did I just miss it?

We're playing Uncommon Valor, a Solomons/New Guinea area turn based strategy game created by Matrix Games. The devopers include Gary Grigsby(of Pacific War fame) and Keith Brors, et al.

Not quite ready to do CMBB yet, Sunking. I still have to practice a little more. Give me another week.
-
You didn't kill my father, but prepare to die anyway. ;)
Heading home now..look forward to receiving the file.
Admiral Curvalsy.
-
Will send it to you sometime tonight, can't promise when, though. Wife is taking a grad school night class tonight, so I'll be entertaining my son. Could be a little later in the evening when I get it to you.
-
Looks interesting. Where can I get it? The site said they were out of stock.
-
I tell ya. Matrix Games should pay banana and Daddog some commission on this game.
-
I'll have to see if I can find a copy :)

Great stuff Swoop. Let me know when you want a battle.
-
Curval, did you get my turn last night?
-
I sent you an e-mail...yea I got it, will do my turn tonight...it was too late to do it once I looked for the file.
-
Umm...stupid question. How the heck do I load your file? I click Play By E-Mail and don't get prompted for a password as the manual says I will. I can only try and load saved game (and your doesn't show up..the others do and all in same directory), or select scenario..and again, yours isn't there.
I read somewhere that I might have to delete all my saves, is that true?
-
When you received my email, you should've detached the save file I sent you into c:\program files\matrix games\uncommon valor\save
Assuming you did this, you'd enter the game....select "Play by Email", then "Load Saved Game". You should see the game "Coral Sea- Curval vs. banana" in slot 6. You select this file to load. It should say "select password(max 8 characters)".
If you don't see it in there, then go into explorer or my computer, and drill down and make sure the file is in there. If it is, then I don't have any idea why it isn't showing up. If it's not in that save folder, then you detached it to the wrong place.
Is this what you did? If not, tell me exactly what you did, starting with the detaching of the file I sent you.
-
I did it right...as it turns out the game you sent was numbered 006 Coral Sea Curval vs banana..and I already had a 006 game save. I cut and pasted my existing game to another directory and then our battle showed up!
Gonna have to do my moves tonight.
Sigh...sorry about the delay.
-
Lets see some AAR's and screenshots.
-
I haven't had a chance to see if I can procure a copy locally, but I did look at some of the reviews.
So how long is it taking you guys to play a turn? I noticed the reviews mentioned extreme detail (which I like) and the need for micromanagement of units.

lol, that always seems to happen no matter what number slot I pick! :)
np about the delay, I've been nursing a sick family for the last couple of days anyway.

Yes, it's very detailed and micro-managing is part of the fun. That being said, it does have some idiosycrasies, like not being able to target individual enemy TF's for destruction. For fleet to fleet battles, you make sure your TF's are in the correct location, and your crews are well led and well supplied and well rested, and the local AI commander of the fleet takes it from there.
So, it's a hybrid strategy/tactical game, where you'll wear the hats of a local tactical commander(think Raymond Spruance) and a theater commander (think Yamamoto). There are basic yet extremely-gripping combat replays, where you see your planes doing air-to-air combat and then dropping their bombs & torps against bases and ships. During these combat phases, the tension is so thick you could cut it with a knife. And when things start to go bad, you'll find yoyurself yelling at the computer and sometimes walking out of the room, as torpedo after torpedo slams into your precious carriers.
It takes anywhere between 5 minutes and an hour or so to do one turn. It just depends which turn it is, and how anal you are about every unit on the map. Daddog and I just started another scenario, and he spent two hours doing his first turn! I typically spend about 15-20 minutes per turn.
BTW, it got runner up to CMBB for wargame of the year at one of the big wargaming sites.
I recommend checking out the UV UBB. You'll find tons of addicted UV gamers hanging out over there.

Here's something to tide you over until we start posting our game's AAR's.
This is a typical thread of a UV game: http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=25274
And this is my second PBEM game, where my opponent and I decided to get into character and tell the tale of our battle in the form of letters home to our relatives. In this thread, I'm Bax. Toro is the guy I played against. http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=30237

Hehe, that is actually kinda sweet of you banana.
See if you can find a "Panzerjaeger Hortlund" in the Matrix forums, then see the date of register for that guy :)
Trust me, I've seen those threads and forums. I just thought it would be cool to see you two slug it out :)
I didnt know you frequented those boards too though...
-
Well Hortlund...if I sink a carrier or two of his have no fear..you will hear ALL about it. If I lose a couple I will leave the AAR to banana. ;)
The first few turns in the Coral Sea scenario are going to involve positioning and maintenance of carrier group and planes (land and sea based). It will probably take 4 or 5 turns before our first engagement.

Wanna bet? ;)

hehehe....
Okay man...as the announcer says on The Price is Right, "Come on down!"

FINALLY found this thread!

Ya, I am trying to get a couple of friends hooked also. Skernsk has it now and we have been playing phone tag. Also started the Coral Sea with brady. :) Have two "Green Hell" scenarios with banana and cup. Those are about 4 months long. Cup cut off my head and stuck it on a pole. I should have kicked him out of my squad. banana and I had a good one going. Pretty much trading blows, but then something when wrong and we had to end it. Here is one screen shot when I caught 4 of bananas DD's with some CA's and DD's of mine.
Here is another when I was doing the Coral Sea vs Cup. Port Morseby was READY. Yet he never touched it. Just went around and captured every base BUT PM!
If anyone here wants to go a round let me know. I will do another short one. :)
Time is the biggest factor for me. The large scenarios take me a couple of hours for one turn. Once you are set up you can crank one out in 30 minutes, but it takes me a bit longer. Coral Sea the small scenario after the setup I can do a turn in about 15 minutes.
FYI, play banana when he is tired. ;)
-
Hey daddog. :)
I've been recommending it too...should have a few guys playing soon. One is a for sure. He is the guy I used to play that WW2 Battles of The South Pacific game with via modem. When I told him about it and how similar it was he immediately started to recall highlights of former games....especially the ones he was particularly tricky and successful in. ;) He wanted me to confirm how cool UV is before he purchased. I'm e-mailing him tonight.
banana, did you get my turn? Hope everything is okay with the family. Colds? Flu?
-

Yep, sure did. Will be sending you the return turn tonight.

I looked for it last night but I had a long hard day yesterday and sacked-out quite early. I have both files now.
Combat? What stinking combat? :) You must be bombing my bases. That's not very friendly of you.:p
-
Let me see if I have this right banana.
You're in a game of Uncommon Valour rightnow with Curval.
You're in the Grand Prix Legends leauge which races every Tuesday.
You're in a Diplomacy match with me and 4 other guys.
You're doing the BF 1942 thing with the Johnsons squad.
You're getting up to speed in CMBB and you should be ready for a match with SunKing in a week.
And of course, Aces High.
Did I leave anything out? :)
-
Did I leave anything out?
Yes, I'm also in a Diplomacy game with the Warbirds boys over at AGW.
I'm also in two other UV PBEM games, with Daddog and Cup from my squad.
I know it sounds like a lot, but all the diplomacy stuff I can do at work while my scripts run, and all my UV moves happen late at night after the family is asleep.
I get Tuesday(GPL League) and Friday(Johnsons, AH) nights to play computer during "Prime time". The rest of the week I'm a family man.
And no, I have no idea how I'm going to squeeze in CMBB with Sunking. But I'll do it somehow. :)
I'm just starting to get my gaming life back after being totally focused on raising a little boy. Now that he's four, I've already got him playing his own computer games on his own PC.
-
He is playing a game of UV with me.
Squad night every Friday.
Squad training Saturday night (dive bombing).
He calls me from work to explain what I am doing wrong in UV.
He works during the week.
Some where in there he has time for his wife and son. ;)
-
LOL 3 min apart.
banana? Shouldn’t you be working?

-
Nah, he's about 140,000 posts short of a Ripsnort.
