Spit dweebery
Didn't fly for some weeks. Logged in, grabbed a P51-B with 50% fuel and DT's, climbed a bit and pounced on a furball from above, some fight above a CV-group. Misjudged relative speed a bit when attacking a Spit, nearly collided but got a good shot in from close range. He dove into the ack and as there were no other NME fighters around I wisely flew on. Ages later I got the kill. Wasn't much to do, when I finally met a co-alt Spit I had to rtb because my fuel was low. A long flight without much satisfaction.
Then, trying to decide what to do next, I saw a guy land 10 kills with a Seafire. Never flew Spits much, too easy and didn't want to be called a dweeb. But I promised myself to try a few rides I'm not used to this tour and thought 'what the hell'. Took off with 100% fuel from a carrier near an NME field where a nice fight was developing. Even had to adjust the views, that had been a loooong time ago! Dragged a few people into the ack and had three kills quickly without firing a shot. Dweebish but fun. Then we could put some pressure on the NME and after some great minutes of intense air to air I realized I had 50% fuel left, 102 hispano rounds left and no less than 7 kills! I just used all the things I learned while flying more difficult planes, energy management, reversals, SA etc. and balanced on the thin line between diving for the ack and being able to hit the enemy without risk. Would have done the same in an F4U-1 or FM2. But what a great plane the Seafire is for this! Lead turning La-7's near blackout and simply swat the bastards without any trouble. Unbelievable energy retention in hard turns. Great acceleration from near stall to decent maneuvering speed. My improved gunnery also helped to save the Spit's small ammo load. When I had spent my cannon ammo on mauling a Ju-88 formation (sadly only one was killed) I decided I had to turn for home. Near the carrier I caught a lone TBM and shot that one down with my last bit of .303 ammo. 9 kills! But then my relative inexperience with the Seafire revealed itself. I plunked it down just a bit too hard on the carrier deck. 'You have crashed'. Some swearing was called for… 9 kills without a scratch and then not been able to land the damn thing! But a fun fight nonetheless. Would I have achieved the same in my beloved and very familiar FM-2? The landing would have gone much better, but 9kills? No.

I find kills in spitfires to be much more rewarding than kills in getaway planes . Last time I took a piggy51 up I got 6 kills, but zero fights . If that TBM pilot had known what he was doing you would've had a hell of a fight on your hands in a spitV .
My goal shifted from getting kills to getting fights years ago .
-
Fm 2 is just that easy
np
those dweeb rides are good for base defending
-
When I started AH I tried to find fights, now I try primarly not to get killed while doing some killing myself. Everyone has to decide for himself on this of course. My bit of 'realism' is that I want to survive every mission like a real life fighter pilot would have done.
I have more than 300 kills in FM-2, it is the fighter I like the most and are the most familiar with. Never ever had 9 kills in that with so much ease.
And a TBM a tough nut to crack for a Spit V??? Sorry, but I don't understand why.
-
when there is no fuel I take up a 51b since 25% fuel is enough range to put most sane people to sleep...
How anyone ever dies in the 51 of anything but sheer boredom is beyond me... gotta be the easiest plane besides the dee9 to fly in the game.

i like the Fm2 alot and it very similar to the seafire
Fm2 climbs batter accelerate batter (up to a certien speed) and i like his guns
seafire is faster and has batter guns
i frequenly land 6-9 victories with a fm2
and i barely fly the seafire
and about "i never landed 9kills in a Fm2 with so ease"
you said yourself the 3 first kills where cause of Ack and 2 more where bombers, thats 4 kills of fighters
so i dont think its the plane who made it so easy, it was the situation
P.S
Spit dweeb

I'm "in the red" on all of the Navy planes except for the Seafire, which I flew once for kicks and bagged 2 kills in turnfights before getting drilled by a gang from the airfield. Of all the Navy planes, the funnest is the Seafire - good blend of speed and turn. Second favorite is the FM2 - good turns, good weapon ballistics, and it has that Disney-esque look to it. :)

Hey Lazs,
No flames here, Im just wondering what you base that on. what makes you feel that the Dee9 and the Pee51 are so easy. I know they are both fast. Maybe because you can BnZ with them pretty easily?
I do fly the Dee9 (Dora) alot, and enjoy it. Im far from an expert pilot, Im stilling learning even after half a dozen years flying. to use energy effectively in most FWs you need to manage it well. use it poorly and you become easy prey for your enemy. Id say to energy fight well in one isnt exactly easy.
Maybe its because New pilots tend to use them?
-
Lazs, spend a tour in the P51 and don't die once, then your rant about them will be more than just hot air.
Now, in spite of that little disagreement, I've learned that you Lazs, yes you sir, are a genious!!! You fly the Fm2, and in it recently I've had more laughs and fun than I've had in a long time in the game. Oh, I know ya don't much care for me Lazs, that's ok. :)
I am just glad you kept mentioning the FM2 on the boards, it caused me to give the little bird a try. Thanks for that Lazs, I'm having a blast in it.

Flying P51-B mainly because not many people are on-line when I am and it has range. This causes boredom but I always have a good book at hand.
But never mind lazs, I long ago found out that you get perverse pleasure out of disagreeing with people on the verge of being quite unacceptably socially inept. Would like to meet you some day, I really do.
Of course the first three kills were easy and some luck or inexperienced pilots were involved. But still I had to work a fair bit, numbers were fairly even most of the time. Good fun. I'm not that good, just pleasantly surprised with the Seafire. Still I don't think I'd do that well in an FM2, how much I love it. Seafire feels lighter and has hispanos, the FM2 has lots of ammo.
Gonna log in after a bite and if a good acrrier fight is on, I'll take the FM-2.
-
steve... fly the fm2 for a tour without getting killed in it... try to maintain oh, k/h of say 5 or more. I know I could fly the 51b and have very few deaths... it would just be boring as hell.
I wish more people would fly the fm2... it has been my sad experiance that the few who do fly it aren't very good. I would love to run into some of you super pilots who land these huge sorties.. A big deal for me is say 4-7 kills. Mostly more like 2 or 3 tho.
even with my mediocre record.... I rarely get killed by another FM2...
If more guys flew the Fm2 then..... they would be forced to fight (you ain't runnin in the thing) and.... I would have some really good fights... you high kill super pilots could show me your stuff.

Lazs, I never said anywhere that I as a "high skill super pilot".
In fact, I never said I was good. I AM guilty of saying I've had some success in the game and that I've improved since I started.
If you equate that into "high skill super pilot" I guess that's your prerogative.
As for flying a tour in any plane without dying, well I'm not capable of that. I'm too aggressive, I get bored easily, and I'm not good enough. I know, here's the part where you toss in some sarcastic remark about me being aggressive, or some other slight. Well, my K/H isn't stellar, I know. but at almost 9 in fighter and over 12 in attack, it isn't horrible either.
Tell you what I will do though, I'll fly the FM2 for the whole tour in August(I'm on vacation for much of July), and we'll see how I do. I would really like to go to the DA with you though so I could get some lessons in the FM2, if you are so inclined. I love learning things in the DA. Shane has taught me a ton in the one or two times we've gone.... would you mind?

Uh-Oh !!! Steve is coming down into the weeds !!! ;)
I flew the FM2 alot in Tour 32 and had good success with it (247 kills - 139 deaths). I will go to the DA with ya anytime and mix it up with you if you want.
Not quite as experienced as Lasz ... but I can act as a good drone !!!
Rude and the boyz are very good in the FM2 also ... I speak from experience.

51 and fm2 are both in the same boat...SA breakdown is the only reason you should die. 51 has no excuse for letting anyone get close, fm2 has no excuse if they can't make someone miss.

A few weeks ago I took up an FM-2 from a CV directly behind a Seafire. The Seafire jock was absolutely incredulous as he watched that Wildcat climb right past him with relative ease.
"That thing out-climbs the Seafire??!!"
"Yup, down here it surely does."
"I never would have guessed that was possible!"
"Neither will the bad guys!" (snicker).

I flew the FM2 a bunch before the Guadalcanal scenario. I figured Id being flying the F4F alot. so time to get some stick time in it.
Last summer I talked to Howard Pardue and was saying the FM2 was kind of a Hot Rod Wildcat with a bit more HP. He said the FM2 was about the funnest of his warbirds to fly. He has owned alot of planes over the years.
So, I figured the FM2 was better suited for the MA than the F4F but would get me a decent feel for the airframe.
I really enjoyed flying it. Its alot of fun, but the Guns are a bit weak, so you need to place your bullets well. Still, Its a great ride.
Note: it does have pretty good armament for "Toolsheds" and other ground targets too.

That is only because we have the crappiest Seafire that was ever made in AH.
The far more comman and important Seafire Mk III would probably be a different story.

FM2 has weak guns but tons of ammo.

(http://www.raf303.org/308/photos/zf-ramzey.gif)good to be in spit squad::D :D :D

Because I'm still no good, some time ago I checked out which aircraft the topscorers flew. That didn't help much as they all had their favourite ride. Then with a bit of lateral thinking I realised that answer. Which aircraft shot down the top scorers the most?
That varied a bit too but one aircraft kept popping up as an ace killer. Yes, you guessed it. The Spitfire/Seafire combination. Now I know that is in part due to the numbers of Spit dweebs out there but it was the consistency that it turned up as the bete noir of the aces.
So fly the spit if you want to get kills.

Anybody with any talent can achieve a high K/D if you pick your fights and fly smart in any fighter.
K/D doesn't prove a thing unless you are a well known and credited stick , other than if it is for your own personal game goals.
And most likely nobody much cares about any one elses K/D , only thing noticed is if you put up a good fite even up or out numbered.
Even then odds are , live or die its forgotten in about 1 min flat by both sides.
lazs is one of the few pilots that stick in your craw for 5 min

steve said... "Lazs, spend a tour in the P51 and don't die once, then your rant about them will be more than just hot air. "
well... all I said to you was "flyu the fm2 for a tour without getting killed once" see my point? I think the 51 is far more survivable.
Sax is good in the fm2 so are a lot of the guys in the tas. they don't get those super 9 kill sorties that you guys brag about but... I have never had better fights against another fm2 than with them. No one else I have fought puts up much of a fight but... I see maybe 2 a night in the "uber" FM2 .... I see literally dozens of 51's and spits and la7 and dee 9's
steve... I don't do DA. I can't teach anyone anything. I have tried to show people the little I know before and it is a disaster. truth is... I don't know what I do. There are a few in our squad who do knw how to teach but even then.. As for4 shane...well.. never fought him in the DA but he would probly kill me there.. in the arena he doesn't do so good against me.
Point being... The Da isn't the kind of fight I do well or enjoy (probly they are the same thing)
for such an easy no talent plane the FM2 sure doesn't get used much. I sincerely hope that this tread will change that. I know when I used to fly the -1a every tour in the weeds that it became very popular as a down in the weeds dogfiter. One of the easy planes to fly well. everyone allways got better sorties in it than I did.. I heard about em all the time. Never could figure out why I never ran into those guys either.
9 kill sorties are uber to me. Do that every time or half the time and you wont have to tell anyone about it... believe me... everyone will know.

Sax you are spot on. I normally have a K/D of 4 or better. Last 2 tours, 7 or better. Does that make me a Drex, Levi, Hooligan, XDak or a lazs? Not by a long shot. I'm the worst of the group.

Except, no-one said anything about K/D. :)
-
Fm2 and Spit5 feel pretty similar to me, both are a lotta fun to fly.
While the Fm2 can take more damage, the Spit5 has those cannons. Since I usually fly both amongst large numbers of enemies I much prefer the Spit5 because I can get a kill quicker without giving his wingman time to line up on me while I'm squirting his buddy with those 4 50's.

Let me expand on my comments. I think excelling in a single category means nothing. My K/D is usually good, but my K/H stays in the toilet.
BTW, I'm not being argumentative. Simply agreeing with Sax's comment ref. K/D.
-
"... I'm squirting his buddy with those 4 50's."
Iron ... my Spit V only has .303s in it :D
-
Ya either got it or ya don't.
Few have it...most don't.
Talk is cheap.
It's the driver not the bus that kills ya.
Silly thread.
I know the guys that have it....they keep their mouths shut and let their flyin do their talkin. Humility baby...thats the quality I most admire.

I case you meant me Rude, I never claimed I was any good, just that I was lucky and very pleased after a good flight/fight in the Seafire. Fun is the word. I am a whole lot better now than when I started bu that's only to be expected. I will never make the nr. one spot and frankly I don't give a damn. Some of us do have a life too you know.

Didn't mean you or anyone in particular....just made a statement:)

That stealin kills thingie feels right somehow...at least when they're your kills....as to pee'in in your water, I bet Nopoop has something to do with that one.

Lazs, quit looking at the glass as half full!(even in the water is tinted yellow)
Look at it this way, you live by the water. :)
-
I find the FM2 a better plane and easier to land kills in then spits or zekes. Plus you can take alot of hits and keep on flying unlike a spit.
...-Gixer
-Hells Angels-
-
Gixer, but you do better in the Spits. This tour, you are 7.42-1 in Spit 9s and last tour over 10-1. This tour in FM2s you are just 3.72-1 and the prior tour 0-1. Funny how stats can be misleading like this, I'd assume you do better in the Spit than the FM2.
-
If you cant beat an FM2 with a spit then you are unlucky, assleep, incompetent, overconfident or any combination of all of those things.
lazs
-
Lazs, do you include spit9 in there? I have had spit V's turn with the FM2, but it seems like I have been easily out turning spit 9's. Have I just been lucky?
-
fm2 will outturn spit 9 all else being equal.

I've started flying the FM2 a lot lately cause frankly I hate the MA, especially the big maps, and it is all I can do to keep my interest until AH2 comes out. Best I've done in it so far was 17 kills w/ out a rearm, but couldn't land them because the stupid bish took our field w/ LVT's and i was stuck outta ammo far from home w/ an arngry swarm of bees that was trying to get even for the previous 15 minutes of slaughter I had on them :D
I wish more guys would try the early war stuff, there's nothing like pummeling la7's w/ early birds and racking up the perks and whines :)
-
, there's nothing like pummeling la7's w/ early birds and racking up the perks and whines :) [/B]
You got that right!
-
stang... enjoyed fighting you in the MA. I look for other FM2's to engage... most are not very good in them.. you did real well. ween a couple of very good reversals and some real survival against 6 to 1 odds for a long time. enjoyed the fights we got into at the cv my squaddies were even commenting on your flying.. they wanted me to find you.
yep... if more people flew early war planes they would understand the reason why we all say the fields are too far apart. there would be more fights (we can't run away... er "extend").
