Post by: Furball on June 24, 2003, 10:47:45 AM
:( 6 military police killed in iraq (http://www.sky.com/skynews/article/0,,30000-1094991,00.html)

turns out they were military police training local iraqi's to police themselves.

Looks like the Hussein loyalists are going to play the game of Media attrition, where the world eventually turns against any foreign troops in that country due to nickel/dime deaths, and demand a pull out. Then the madmen can go back to enjoying their fun.

I can't remember if the British troops wore flak jackets in Northern Ireland. I know they found they got a better response from civilians if they 'dressed down', so to speak.

Which reminds me of an old British Army officer recruitment advert, where you are watching some African warlord minion shout at you from the first person perspective, waving his AK in your face a checkpoint. The officer takes off his sunglasses, and the guy calms down and actually starts to sound reasonable.

I saw that Schadenfreunde. The fella in civillian clothing from Whitehall handling the press gives me the creeps.

It was interesting to see the reaction from the wingmen of the Tornado shot down by the US partiot missile. I agreed with his sentiments about the 'courtesy' visit by the commander of the battery shortly after the event. I think that was shortsighted and a little crass.

The insight into media relations and the actual ops side was fascinating.

It does work Syz. That's why the British wanted to get out of helmets and into berets as soon as feasibly possible. It's why they have ditched their protective clothing for the most part.

(Join the FDB's,...become a "Troll Master"...you're a rookie)

Incidently "Nickel/dime" means to pick away in small numbers, not in a sense of "worth", you idjits. But, considering who is replying to me, its no wonder I have to spell it out.

I understand your point Dowderoni, er Dowdochini.  I admit it's a Catch 22; the civilians react aggressively if you wear your battle armor, and you are a sitting duck if you don't wear your battle armor.

But, I don't know that the general security condition warrants giving up protecive clothing.  I also think it isn't as much what you wear but how you act, witness the U.S. forces who avoided a deadly riot by pointing their weapons at the ground and kneeling.

IMHO, it just goes to show the military is are ill suited for policing!

Eventually?.. 3/4 of the world are already against war of aggression. In fact I would suggest most of the world considers war of aggression a major war crime regardless of what euphuisms are used.

Umm, all wars are wars of agression.  So was the Allies invasion of Germany. 66% of the American public was against going in to help the british prior to Pearl Harbor.Maybe we should have just let them be?

A recent poll inside Iraq shows 69 percent approval of the coalition forces. Alas it only takes a small percent to cause major problems.

A recent poll eh.. Paul Brenner was on TV yesterday talking about how Iraq wasn’t quite ready for democracy as the infrastructure hasn’t been set up yet.. poll stations and the rest.. They can’t even take a poll yet.

Um.. no Rip.. we got involved in ww2 to STOP aggression.. BTW that 66% you mentioned.. These were mostly conservatives of the time that didn’t want to have anything to do with Europe.

Hey Rip.. here’s a little dirty secret I bet you don’t know.. Up until 1943 most of the major American corporations WANTED Hitler to win..

LOL, thats some good stuff there 10bears! History re-written, by 10bears! LOL!

FYI, ALL corporations in any war dislike war because of trade restrictions, sanctions, etc.

Does Joe Kennedy ring a bell 10bears? ;)

Conservative and democrat hot issues were vastly different than they are today, dare I say they were almost reversed compared to today. ;) Not sure how you can even compare the two.

No, what you meant was that - if we stay the course in Iraq - every dead American soldier would save you between a nickel and a dime in cheap Iraqi oil you use to fill your BMW.

the brits are great dudes but they gotta wear their vests. havent heard any specifics yet but id be willing to bet the kia would have been one or two tops if those boys had their vests on. i understand they want to appear more friendly but i dont think they need to worry about that as much in iraq as they did in north ireland. the locals in north ireland hadnt just been rescued from an evil sob dictator by british troops. the locals in iraq know the score i dont think vests are going to sour their opinion of the brits or americans.

in this case sounds like vests might not have saved them. two killed facing a mob other four chased back to police station. iraqi cops bailed thru windows told the brits to follow the brits stood there ground and went down alamo style after a two hour fight. maybe the two killed by the mob were killed by pissed off iraqis but to assault four guys for two hours that sounds like paramilitary fighters.

Unlikely now that parliament is discovering exactly how hokey the 'evidence' used to convince it to go to war was.

British forces are already stretched to breaking point.

Must See: Alistair Campell in Select Committee this afternoon, after Jack (not me guv) Straw dropped him in it yesterday.(rofl)

Highlights on Newsnight!

With or without flakjackets, these are the first british combat deaths. And they seem to have been Royal Military Policemen.

I'm still baffled that their desperation to make the case that Hussein had WMD led them to plagerize a PHd thesis... AND hope it would not be noticed.

Personally, I think the intelligence services are laughing their tulips off at the government right now. I believe they had their information twisted and their conclusions ignored.

I can see the British government catching some real heat over this one - and the scars won't be completely healed in time for the next general election.

10Bears, I was looking for the link to a poll I read last week and found this......................... ...................

Thursday, June 26, 2003 at 06:24 JST

BAGHDAD — More than half the Iraqis responding to a recent poll said they want U.S.-led coalition forces to remain in Baghdad, but many also said the coalition is doing a poor job in restoring security.

The Iraq Center for Strategic Research and Studies, an independent think tank, conducted the poll on more than 1,100 people from various social strata, according to the al-Sabah newspaper Wednesday. It said 51.6% of those polled said they wanted the Americans stay in Iraq until a permanent government is established and about 25% said they wanted the coalition to stay until an interim government was formed. (Kyodo News)

............................. .....................
the funny thing is that the Iraq Center for Strategic Research and Studies was created two days ago by Paul Bremer.

just thought you would like to know
