I posted something simillar on the "other game's" official board.
Whenever I refer to "right now we have.." I m talking about stuff that has been like that in the other game..ok? (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)
Here goes:
As it is now, CVs are just a large AAA platform and a place to take off from. Escort ships did carry more than just AAA, they also had big arty guns.
My suggestion is to let players use these guns to pound fields/enemy CVs.
Use the spotter plane feature from "that other WW I sim", using small or medium buffs such as TBF, Ju 88, Betty, etc as spotter planes. Later on include a dedicated spotter plane (PBY, FW 200,..).
Include ground atry as well, make them "movable". When they are being moved they drive around the landscape as a small convoy that can be strafed by marauding P-47s or Sturmoviks.
Player controlled arty would add some interesting aspects to the strat model IMHO.
Opinions? Flames? Was this suggested before?
Go ahead guys... (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

I think it's been brought up before. I'm not so sure I like the idea...
For, as dweebs the masses be, they cannot fathom the dweebishness of which they are capable. There has been the Dora dweeb, the Zeke dweeb, the Spit dweeb, the Runstang dweeb, and every type of dweebery which hath been made possible unto the masses. Yea, none could remotely compare with the dweeb of the arty. There would be those who shall take those "big guns" and with them shalt they smite down many an aircraft whilst the aircraft struggles to take off or land. And yea, would the Arty-Dweeb hog the "big guns," and none other could control them, unless the godz were to stoop to such dweebery and make MORE big guns. And in this manner, as I have foretold, would the Arty-Dweebs reign in terror within the arena, and the Knights, Arty-Dweebs they would be, would be thus dubbed "dweebs 'a plenty." And then, the Bishops would see need for their trusted Spits, and wouldst attempt to destry the Knights. Meanwhile, the fate of the Rooks is not foretold by this prophet, but yea, may they know that their name will be held above all others when they control the map.

PS-The Arty-Dweeb bears no resemblance to the "Arby's Dweeb," as the Arty-Dweeb isn't sitting behind a cash register.

Artilliry sounds cool, unless you have played that "other WW1 Sim" and then you realise that it just really gets on your nerves after a while. Every field is in range of enemy artilliry, spotters climb to mind numbing altitudes and close a field before anyone has a chance to stop them.
I can just picture it now....half a dozzen spotter planes pulverizing the hangers, acks, runway, planes taking off and landing with an unlimited amount of shells untill the field is nothing but dust, then on to the next one. No thanks. I for one can manage just fine without artilliry, bombers are more fun and require more skill.
All this just My opinion of course (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

This was actually discussed as a possibility in "that other sim" before gang #2 left to form Playnet.
I don't mind the possibility, but I think it should be done similar to how I sketched it out in the "Strategy Thread #2." A CV task force would rarely move that close to a shore, the job would typically be done by a battleship/landing force escort task force. I envisioned when strat would be in full effect, complete with ground forces, arty barrage would be used to "soften up the beaches" for the landing craft-bound troops. An airfield could also be a target(especially if it is close to the landing zone) but the primary reason for arty is to take out any enemy ground troops.
If strat finally becomes a reality, then something similar to this would have to be put into effect for any PTO arena.

I still think the big(gest) problem would be someone hogging the arty. If a dweeb were to direct all the arty fire for his dweebish cause (vulching...), nobody else could direct the fire. At least not without doing one of two things: 1)make more arty for additional players (ummm, that could get REAL dweeby REAL fast), 2)process the orders for the arty through the various players controlling it. The problem with the second option is that two dweebs arty vulching and one player hitting tanks with the arty means that two thirds of the time the arty is used for dweebishness. Basically, people playing the game the "right way" would be penalized so someone could transgress in their dweebish ways.
Now, if the player would have to control the arty directly, with another player acting as a spotter... That could have possibilities, if it were tough enough. Of course, AH is far from even considering player controlled ground vehicles, so it's just a pipe drem right now...

Wow..ARTY sounds sooo cool..being an ex-navy FTG it would be very fun to blast the beaches in prep for ground forces...But only for that use...if you combind naval forces with the field taking strat much dweebery would result...Would you take off a fie;d that was getting blasted by 104's??? Not me...
In theory it sounds great but the logistics might be a nightmare for the code guys...hey PYRO any imput here?
Can it be made dweeb proof?

Well in that 'other WW1 sim' you could not pour unlimited arty in. You called a few spotting rounds to get the target fixed then asked for a single barrage which arrived randomly distributed in the area of your last spot. After this you had to come back and start the spotting process again. There was also no question of 'hogging' the arty capability as any number of people could call in their own arty, rarely to the same place though as it just got confusing. The complaints against arty in that'other WW1 sim' (all right DOA) were that 1) The map view made it too easy to place and correct an initial spot and 2) The spotting planes could do their job from ridiculous heights without needing escort.
Possible solutions include:-
1) Spotting MUST be done from a 2 man aircraft with two crew (no hopping front to back). This reduces the number of dweebs as they dont 'play well with others' (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif).
2) Spotting must be done without map view by looking visually. Dont show bomb bursts on the map view.
3) Spotting cannot be done above a certain height. This stops spotters arriving at 30K and pounding the field for 20 mins while defenders climb (a la DOA)
4) Each spotter is restricted in the number of barrages they can call in. For the same reasons as point 3.
5) Arty can only be used when in range of a friendly arty facility (or fleet)
6) That arty facility CAN be traced and destroyed (unlike DOA) to stop the attack.
Just ideas, feel free to rip 'em to shreds (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)
