How about rethinking proximity kills? I'm all for scoring a kill if you chase someone into a crash, but not when you just happen to be in the vicinity of someone who crashes.
Today I was flying a weed burner, passed under an enemy no closer than 2.5 above, and was 2.9 away from him when with great skill I managed to bump into a hill. He never saw me, never chased me, and sure as heck never got close enough to put any fire into me, but he got a kill on me.
Talk about charity.

why? you don't earn perkies for them, they only show up in stats... which does have somewhat an effect on ranking...
but... i actually fly people into the ground at times, bingo ammo, or they simply ate dirt doing evasives.... i think i *earned* a kill there.
of course i get the occasional lawndart vulcher/cherrypicker where i merely happened to be in proximity of his dweebiness...
leave it as it is...
and try not to fly so dweebily. :D
-
Its a compromise but I would leave it as it is..............
some times we work hard to bring about an advantage only for our opponent to "evade" till he falls out the sky and augers.
some times we get a free kill............ mostly this guy was suiciding into your base as you take off.
Can you get a proxy even when your opponent has been pinged by someone else and not touched by you?

No, in that case the kill goes to the one that did the damage, no matter how far he is away, unless he died in the meantime. Then it is possible again to get a proximity kill without firing a shot.

I got one of those the other day somehow without firing a shot. Was on takeoff and nme got hosed over the runway as I took off. As I passed over him it gave me the kill. Dunno why.

The auto-ack probably got him and you were the only/closest plane around so you got the kill.
Flew a hurricane into the ground last night with my La7 after what seemed to be a 5-10 minute standoff. Just as he came over the top and was at the bottom of the loop, he ran out of altitude, and one of my squaddies was coming to my rescue ... he got the kill - he was closer than I was.
We had a good laugh.

If you see two planes HO, hurry to get close to the enemy one and hope your countryman dies first :D

Good examples in this thread. Apparently many of us have been credited with kills we did nothing to earn. We can laugh about that, but it reflects poorly on game design.
If we chase a victim or damage a victim and the victim crashes, sure, we deserve the credit. But if we crash independently of any hostile action, nobody deserves the credit.
Apparently distinguishing between earned and unearned proximity kills is one of those things that is simply too difficult to rectify.
I'm dazzled the game is as good as it is. But at some distant time when everything else has been perfected, it wouldn't hurt to take another look at proximity kills.

Many a time I have hugged terrain aginst higher nme placing myself in exactly the right position. "I dare you to shoot me, because I will enjoy watching you auger attacking at that angle". After flying without manover kills for several years, I believe its better for game play to allow for manover kills, and have an occational freebie. Proxie range is 1.8k btw.

ok i really dont care about maneuver kills and how they are decided.
but why dont we get something for assists?
besides the obligatory 'attaboy' message.
like maybe cotton candy.

The major advantage of proximity kills is that it prevents, or at least penalizes, folks that would just auger rather than giving you a kill.

The proximity kill is surrealistic when you crash at 2k of a GV (GV didn't land any bullet on you) and the system give him a kill ...
-
I have pondered a solution for quite some time....had a discussion with -several- people, Even though it sucks to give a proxy kill away, but nice to get one, me & my squaddy (twitchy) thought it would be nice to get perks for multiple proxy's or assists on a single sortie. Seems fair, since most proxys are usually only once, unless your lucky or smart enough to evade or outfly someone. And since everyone has had a thousand assists on one sorty & gettin nothin for it (myself included), putting that much effort should get a little something for it. especially proxies. Noone can land multiple proxies without some sort of evasive manuevering talent, or at least calling in air support.

get rid of all computer tracked kills. just use gun camera shots and or another pilots actually eyewitness account of the kill. Have everyone send their film and mission debriefs into HTC for tallying.
-
So then the scores would be updated and poste din what?
2 weeks? ;-P

When someone can land a couple of kills in a C-47 there's room for improvement.:p
-
When the overeagerbeaver salivating over an easy goon kill augers in his haste to shoot an unarmed target, a system message should go out: SO and so was killed by a C-47.:D I'd give up that prox kill to see that anyday.;)
-
If it twertn't for proximity kills, dweebs like me wouldn't get kills.
Please don't take the last vestage of dweebish self esteem I have left in this virtual life away!
Or if we want to be really really realistic... require a fellow country man to be in visual range to serve as an eye witness to the kill otherwise no kill counts... ok well unless you have gun camera.. ok add gun camera footage. But you have to remember to turn it on.
Sheesh.... does any one really care.

If you dont score a single hit, you should never be awarded with a kill.
-
A good number of people willingly enter fights from defensive conditions and often maneuver their timid cherry-picking opponents into the dirt. Doing this should probably be rewarded with a kill. Not an easy event to determine admitedly...

Nothing is perfect. I have given away as many free kills as I have earned through augers and acks. Do I think it can be improved? Yeah. Is it worth the time and effort to put into it? No. Proxy kills are not common enough to devote the time to research how many are valid maneuver kills vs the suiciders at fields vs anything else. Definitely not worth the time needed to alter/add/do whatever to the code.
As Shane said, they don't count towards the overall score or rankings. They only show up on the kill stats screen. Is it really that big of a deal seeing someone land kills in a C-47?
