GameFaction have a preview up here (http://www.gamefaction.com/pc/previews/f1challenge9902/). The graphics look much the same as F12002 (although F12002 does look very nice anyway) one of the most interesting comments made in the preview was:
"One of the major problems with F12002 for sim racers was the net code, it was terrible with the average game only holding 6 players, even then sometimes struggling. But ISI have listened to the many complaints, and now ADSL owners will be able to enjoy double the numbers of players, with owners of better connections numbers might just go into the 20's or even more."
The game is out on Friday :)

I wonder how hard it will be to port GTR2002 to 99-02...
I'll be buying it either way though. Does this mean I can hear "Hakkinnen is about 5 seconds in front of you" from my pit crew? :D

I believe you will see the port within a month or 2 from the simbin guys. They ported the GT mod to 2002 in about i month if i recall.
I will be buying the new sim, because it will be the last decent F1 sim for at least the next 4 years (sony bought the F1 license). And I feel the mod community will support it well.
-
What Sony owns the F1 license for producing games, exclusive? Oh great. Well I guess the other companies can go make Indy car games then.
Then again I guess it does make business sense. EA F1 2002 is GOOD, very realistic.

EA has an exclusive license to NASCAR, which is why Sierra Sports/Papyrus won't be doing any more "NASCAR Racing" games. There's a pretty strong push by NR fans for Papyrus to do another GPL.
I would expect ISI will start a sports car sim, though. After all, they did a game called "Sports Car GT" a few years ago before getting into F1. Hopefully we'll get an ALMS sim next year from them. :)

MrCoffee
Yeah Sony is doing F1 (only for PS2 i hear)
EA is doing NASCAR
Papy may do IRL or I hope another GPL like sim
Codemaster IRL and Sports Car stuff - dont even bother
-
I wish somebody would do a hard-core WRC sim. CMR3 sucks balls.

Simbin will NOT be porting GTR2002 to F1C from what I have read. Simbin is going commercial, after the 77 mod I believe that will be it for freebies from them. There is supposedly a big track pack coming and that will cost money as far as I know.
And from the sounds of things... anyone who tries to port GTR2002 may get some nastygrams.
GTR2003 is in the future, but likely a commercial release.
There are a ton of mods otw already for F1C, most were projects started with F12002 and now being held for F1C.
The most interesting of which (as far as I am concerned) is:
http://www.htcc2002.com/
Nother one I also look forward to:

Yeah HTCC should be great. All the RT cars are being ported to HTCC and vice versa.
-
Thats what was originally happening Funked.. I've not followed its development for a loong time, but it seems like they maybe taking a step away from the RT cars (or some of em anyways). At least they tossed the RT mini and built one from scratch it looks like.
Not sure about the other cars. Though the cortina looks like the RT one.
You been running the Ring much Funked? Can't wait to try these HTCC cars there.
I've only ran a 360 challenge car there and ran under 10 mins so I was happy.

I am curious what the new simbin plan is, they do excellent work IMO I hope they keep it up.
Something else to have a look at is http://www.projectwildfire.com/pr/ for n2003, also I know the is a V8 super car mod coming for n2003.
-
Simbin have said they've been looking at a few different engines, I hope they can come up with some kind of deal for F1 Challenge 99-02 as they already have experience with ISI's engines so hopefully that would mean a quicker port of their GT2002 mod. I've said before I would have been happy to pay for the GT2002 mod and if they can get even more access to the engine through a proper licensing deal then any future mods should be even more impressive. I really hope that the multiplayer aspect of F1 Challenge 99-02 lives up to the rumours so that those with acess to dedicated servers could host full grid races.
-
Yes i am very excited at the prospect of a good multiplayer experience with F1, and GT sims. And since EA is doing NASCAR they really needed to update their net code anyway.

I have taken the NGT cars out on the Ring a few times. I really like it, and hope to drive on it in real life someday. It reminds me a lot of some of our local mtn. roads, except no speed limits, no deer, and no cars coming the other way.

And yeah some of the RT models aren't so great. The Guilia shape is not even close to the real thing. Did you ever see my Guilia skins? :)

Now how would I have known it was yours +) That looks pretty good. Yeah that shape is off.. by alot.. Turns out the RT mini was an oddball too, not really a mk1 or a mk2...
About the Simbin guys... well Henrik(sp?) Roos signed on with the SBDT, and as he is directly involved in FIA GT, I'm assuming we will see GTR2003, or more likely.... GTR2004. If they are going to get license to use an engine, then licenses for the cars etc... Its not gonna happen within the next 6 months I just can't see it...
There is also a V8 Supercar mod coming for F12002 or F1C, that to me represents the perfect online racing (if its F1C)... fairly equal cars very limited setup options... awesome sound +) Aussie Nascar makes the north american roundy round guys just look silly +) IMO

Yeah the Aussie V-8 cars would be great fun. I'd love to drive Mount Panorama, what a cool track.
PS Speaking of sound, have you tried the C5R for GTR 2002? Best V-8 sound I've heard in a computer game.
-
hmm no I haven't, I think I tried it in the SSM mod though. I shall have to drag the vette and saleen into GTR.
The marcos I know used to sound great, but I haven't tried it in GTR v1.2. Its an american V8 too I think..
Give the Toca Race Driver Demo a spin Funked, the Multiplayer demo is less buggy, and more worth it if you can find a server to drive on. The basturds don't let you host a race and drive it without someone else joining  The V8's sound pretty sweet in it too.

Ok - just picked up F1C tonight - Electronics Boutique had it by me.
Havent installed it yet - will give a review in due course.
-
Funked... the C5R in GTR uses the Marcos sounds...
Anyways, F1C i will be waiting awhile before I buy, I hate the F1 stuff, and just like F12k2, I won't buy F1C until there are mods worth playing available

Great. Anything with a small block Chevy is going to sound pretty similar. Fords shouldn't sound much different.
-
Exclusive licences on sports? geez.. thats just the exact worst sides of capitalism.
IMO everyone should be able to do games of sports, without anyone being able to obtain 'exclusive' license.
What kind of capitalism is it when one owns the monopoly?
Thought the capitalism was about competition as well...
-
Fishu - its is about competition - to see who can offer the most money for the exclusive licencing.
Back to the game...
Played it for all of about 20 minutes before I had to hit the sack - thus far Im pretty impressed with the minor changes they've made - and I think a few things could have been done better.
Right off the bat, I felt that there was a TON more mechanical grip (remember the complaints?). And after having played GTR2002 for the last few months, these F1 cars may be faster - but you cant spin em unless you try. :D
Your tires will squeel just before the limit of adhesion now - nice for us non FF users. The traction control sound is very loud... not sure if I like that yet.
The graphics are the same as far as I can tell - maybe a little more shiny, but nothing to write home about - not that they're bad.
The new camera angles are fantastic. Many to choose from in the car, and during the replays, there is an option to watch the race from the positions that TV cameras film the RL race from. In addition, most of the "floating" during replays has been erased... still not up to the "replay standards" of a certain 5 year old Sony franchise, but bearable.
The sound is so/so... I picked DLR's 99 car and the engine sounded like garbage. Ill have to try out the McLarens or Ferreris when I get home tonight and see what they sound like because the last one sounded like a muffled cat screaming in mono.
Physics engine doesnt seem to have changed much - menus are basically the same - the open "credits" look like EA spent about 20 minutes on them (bunch of drivers names flying across the screen to some Euro-Techno trash)
No idea what the multiplayer is like yet... the back of the box said 7 people over lan or broadband, so Im not sure where others are getting claims of 20+ racers. Maybe Im reading it wrong - havent tried MP yet... we'll see.
All in all, its tough to convince yourself that EA didnt take F12002, add a few more cars and tracks, make a different intro scene, and box F1C as a different game.
The ability to race with (and against) past drivers (MIKA!!!) is great, and the small tweaks seem to be working... but if youre expecting a vastly different game, you wont get it. Its a rehash of F12002, just improved. The netcode and moddability will make or break this game, although since it will probably be the last F1 game for some time, its probably worth your time and money to pick it up ($39.95) as the modders will be pumping out games for years to come.
-
Mt thoughts exactly Saurdaukar this is going to be the last decent F1 sims for years to come so i might as well pick it up.

If you ever do, tell me. I drive it pretty much weekly.
When I'm not driving it I'm eating "Brats" and watching kids wreck Dad's car.

Yep. Codemasters really really really suck at making racing games.
-
Mt Panorama exists already in a couple other sims, built by the community... well One person Chris K
He is working on a version for F1C i believe. (or f12k2)
