In addition to that, he had a very interesting life.

Now come the liberals to enlighten us about what a racist caveman he was.

You don't have to be a liberald to note that he was, at one point, very racist.  He ran on the platform of 'Preservation of segregation'.  If that's not racist, I'm not fat.

That aside, he didn't stay racist, and that's more important than what he did when he was young.  The measure of a man is his abillity and willingness to change his mind when he realizes he is wrong, and S. Thurmond changed his mind.  That's more important to me than any crap he spewed back in the 40s.

Our oldest Duma (parliament) member is Yegor Kuzmich Ligachov, former Ñentral Ñommittee of the Communist Party secretary, who was responsible for ideology after Suslov died... :( Also known for starting an anti-alcohol campaign in 1985 and baiting Yeltsin in late 80s. True "debris of the empire" ("îáëîìîê èìïåðèè")... Reflects the state of affairs in Russian legislation... :(

When they recovered the C.S.S. Hunley, they found a "Re-Elect Strom Thurmond" campaign bumper sticker on the rudder.

He survived that?  In Russia?  I can't imagine he was very popular based on the stats on alcohol consumption over there.

yea with kung fu grip for beating up blacks.

its respectible that he changed his views, but he has been a lame duck in office for the past 10 years or more. his aids voted for him and just went along party lines.
