So, did he die at the end?  I say he did.

He's dead because he didn't look back? No way...He was alive, riding off for his next conquest.

according to Kevin Spacy he dies in the end :D

He was asleep at the Horse...happens all the time.

 Now I remember my Pa tellin me all bout Grandpa doing this here same thing all the time and it seems he'd set out fer Kansas City and wake in St Louis.

So bet ten tree rats to a coon in the hollar that Shane is alive.:p

In the both the book and the movie he dies at the end.

The Negotiator aside (talk about your obscure references), and not having read the book, I always thought he was alive. After reading this thread on IMDB  (http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0046303/board/nest/409059) I think they left it as a sort of cliffhanger for a possible sequel.
