Title: name that plane
Post by: CurtissP-6EHawk on June 28, 2003, 11:59:48 PM
This may not be a hard one but you dont see much about it. I just linked it to the authors page so the name of the plane is in the address for those that just want to know what it is.

You mean the "XAT-6E" in the jpeg properties doesn't reflect that this is an AT-6 prototype? ;)

Did a little digging and found that this plane was a one of a kind engine test aircraft. The Air Corps was testing in preparation for a shortage of Pratt & Whitney Wasp engines. The engine they used was a Ranger inverted V-12. Turns out the engine had some problems and the Air Corps decided it was a no-go. The plane was later sold off as surplus.

that would be the one. It was sold a guy that raced it in several air races...then again sold, it was last seen in South America and had been converted to a normal AT-6, which is what it was when converted to the Ranger engine for testing...(AT-6D SN# 42-84241)

below is a static reproduction at the Western Museum of Flight museum.
